    You can buy a Vello straight flash bracket for $10 to mount the mic on the side. No big deal.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Explore Baltimore I was forward thinking enough to have them send me that exact bracket with the review unit but no go. Even the bracket is wide enough to block the screen from full vertical. But you can get a handle with a cold shoe or mount to the bottom thread. There are many alt options.

    • @ExploreBaltimore
      @ExploreBaltimore 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My bracket is in the mail and won't be here until tomorrow so I can't yet speak from experience.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried shoving it all the way right or left but it's not the bracket that is the issue, it's the connection to the cold shoe. The base of the bracket where it connects is what will prevent full vertical of the screen and that can't be moved.

    • @Chantelleviews
      @Chantelleviews 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ray Ortega I am going to put the bracket under the camera, and have the camera on one side and the microphone next to it... So nothing in the hotshoe.

    • @ExploreBaltimore
      @ExploreBaltimore 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The bracket I got attached to the tripod hole, not the hot shoe. Screen has full movement, no issue.

    I have been Vlogging with the Canon M3 and the Rode micro for about six months. I bought the M3 because it was really cheap where I live in China. You can buy a cold shoe extension bar that screws into the tripod mount which means that you can mount the microphone off to the side and avoid it interfering with the screen, they are super cheap and convenient and you can still use your tripod. Try searching this in Amazon - Heavy Duty Photography L Bracket with 2 Standard Flash Hot Shoe Mounts

    Thanks for a Good straight forward no-nonsense review… looking at older M6 since I don’t see a need for 32mb of the mark 2..!! A solution to the blocked flip up screen is easy. Use an L bracket to mount the mic. Now you have a solid handle to hold the camera with full fingers and mic is out of the way!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I haven't kept up with Canon mirrorless but this is likely still a great option, I just recall it being so compact yet having the ability to change lenses was a nice option. For the mic mounting, yes, side mount. In the description I have another video linked as well as gear to get around this. Thanks for watching.

    There are microphones that plug directly into the microphone input and don't need to be mounted in the hot shoe.

    M6 FTW! Side flip screens are not ideal for vlogging. Unless you're Casey Neistat and wear shades, the eye movement from side to side is really noticeable. Plus, as others have mentioned, lots of options for mics that don't get in the way. A $9 bottom mount bracket will solve your issues and still allow for tripod use. Good review. Echoes my thoughts exactly.

    You just can't beat a flip screen that comes out to the side. Really not sure why camera manufacturers do anything else. Its a sweet little camera and fab to have 5 axis stabilisation.

  • @jalexb915
    @jalexb915 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I just sold my M6 yesterday as you posted this. I loved this camera except was disappointed it would not stabilize the Rokinon/Samyang manual lenses I have. I would have ultimately kept it as a specific tool, were it not for the lower 24/35 mbps bit rates and the digital IBIS not working with manual lenses (I think Canon could easily allow the menu to over-ride this). However I finally got to the point that I'm tired of trying to make a DSLR/Mirrorless camera function as a video camera, so I'm going save up and purchase the almost released Canon C200 that has the functionality and ergonomics we all keep trying to adapt to our DSLRs / Mirrorless camera bodies. Just my thoughts. Always enjoy your reviews!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Jake. If you can shell out for a c200, then you have no video worries;) Pretty cam. I'm trying to get my work to pick up some c100's at least.
      I'm surprised the digi IS doesn't work with a manual lens. I know it works with the non IS Canon f2 22mm that I got with the review unit but I wish I could test with the adapter. I know that on an IS lens, if you turn it off, you can't use just the digi IS. But if the M lens has IS then you can disable the digi IS. I'll have to look into the non M lens issues if I can find a video on this. Thanks again for watching and the nice words.

    Here's a potential fix for the mic mounting problem, but it might require a little work. I had a similar challenge attaching a Rode Videomic Me to an iPhone 7S, but in principle this fix will work with any camera. I designed a custom hot-shoe mount that puts the mic out to the side and had it made up by a sheet metal worker. When it was finished I painted it black. It attaches to the camera where the tripod screws in. It works with or without the camera being mounted on a tripod. The mic ends up beside the camera near the mic input jack.

    I have an M3 which is almost the same as the M6 and use an Edutige 001 mic which just inserts into the side audio-in port without taking up all the room your Rode does, and probably has as good of sound as far as reviews I have seen and heard.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's a great option for this cam. You probably need an L adapter or a small cable to mount it in the best position but great mic, great price. I don't know the difference between the 001 and the 008 but the 008 sounds pretty darn amazing

    4:42 The Nikon 5000 series cameras have had for a long time the flip-screen, that can be tilted to the side, not restricting access to the microphone input and these are great for Vlogging.

    I almost got one of those. I'm just going to go with my a6500 with the small HD monitor on top. I agree with you on the flip screen. It's like they are all just ignoring feedback. They could have made the best vlogging camera. So close. Who's going to do it? Sony? Panasonic? Canon?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sony has a big shot with the next mirrorless offering. Either in the next 6000 series or simply put a mic input on the RX series and boom.
      That said, bottom mounting the mic to the M6 could work just as well or even the addition of a cage or handle with cold shoe. I prefer super compact and native but it wouldn't take much to make this work.

    Hi Ray, awesome video review. However I think if you'd want to use the microphone and screen at the same time comfortably I'd recommend getting a straight flash bracket to hold the mic(usually on the side) so it doesn't interrupt your view of the screen. Awesome review sir. Cheers!

  • @ChuckFranco
    @ChuckFranco 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just about this 2 days ago and I really wanted this form of camera that has 4k and has a flip up screen but I can't seem to find it. Most smaller cameras that have 4k are point and shoots which I do not like since you're stuck with the same lens forever. I haven't tested my video settings that much but I hope it does look great. I noticed it does produce a lot of noise when in even slight slow light situations. You pretty much have to be extremely lit for you to not have any noise at all. I was really considering the Sony A6500 but no flip up screen, Hence why I ended up getting this.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah the Panasonic G7 amzn.to/2vNgIdK seems like the best budget 4K cam but is not the same form factor as the M6 even though it's smaller than most DSLRs. Low light not that great on either but the f2 lens did help a lot.

    • @ChuckFranco
      @ChuckFranco 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah i also checked out the G7. it's bigger than what I wanted my camera to be which the m6 is the perfect size for me especially I travel a lot. The picture quality of the m6 is pretty darn good too.

    Thanks for this review Ray. It's clarified some issues, but I have some Qs hoping you can field! Q1: I understand your (& others') advice about using mount with bottom thread. Because memory card and battery are on the bottom, doesn't that mean one would have to detach camera from tripod each & every time (& possibly several times a day) to charge up the battery? Q2: is it true one only gets approx. 16 mins. on fully charged battery of 1080p video recording? Q3: I've heard if stabilization is turned on one no longer gets 1080p recording (some limitation of the software). Can you confirm that? What does the HD drop down to? 720p? Q4: in your vid you do not demo much movement (e.g., walking outside at a good clip). Wondering about your opinion of the digital image stabilization? I heard the jello effect is quite bad. Also, others have said the digital stabilization doesn't work with non-Canon lenses. Q5: Others have said the low-light performance is too poor, e.g., in dimly-lit enviro. What has been your experience *with the kit lens*? I'd be shooting indoors often (& my studio is dark with very little ambient light)...wondering if I would have to spend lots of money on lighting equipment. Hope to hear your views.

  • @coldblueeyes
    @coldblueeyes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this video. Very good, as all of yours have been thus far.
    My sense is that the articulating screen problem is a symptom of Canon's thinking: most vloggers will use a lavalier when filming themselves, and will mount a hotshoe mic when filming others, thus looking at the screen from behind the camera. In any case, it is an annoyance, as I now have a 70D that does not encounter that issue.
    Two things you did not address which I would have liked:
    (1) the viewfinder for this camera, which is an additional $200 and puts it on a par with the M5 in terms of price. Have you sampled it, and does it work well? Canon is so peculiar with this sort of thing, because of course if you buy the M5 for the built-in viewfinder, you miss out on the upward-flipping touchscreen, which is better for vlogging.
    (2) the effectiveness of the adapter for EF and EF-S lenses (of which I already have several). These adapters are notoriously unreliable in situations where autofocus can be key to effective video. You noted the effectiveness of the AF tracking on this camera, which stays on your face when you're vlogging. That's great, but it's already good on the 70D. In the comments below, you noted that you didn't get an adapter with the M6 from Canon, but do you have any experience with these adapters, and do you know what it's like when you mount an adapter on an M series Canon and use EF and EF-S series lenses on it? If it's OK, it might be worth me trading in my 70D for one of these.
    Any thoughts on these 2 issues would be most welcome. Again, thanks for this video.

    Pausing the video because when you said that the Canon m6 isn't much different from the 80d (my dream camera), your review has me sold on this camera so far! Too bad about the external mic issue though, but I feel like I can try to work with it, or just use the built-in mic

  • @BlendedFamilyMan
    @BlendedFamilyMan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The flip screen has been driving me crazy on the M5. Now I see it's an issue in the other direction on the M6. Lack of a headphone jack also puts both a little further from perfect. A rig might help it, but looks like the next camera will be an 80D for me.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      80d is great just much different. For me they have different use cases simply based on size but it's definitely a great cam. I don't put much value in a headphone jack ironically, probably cause I have never had one but more so cause it's never been an issue and why I don't put it on my list of must haves but don't get me wrong, I wouldn't turn one down lol. Thanks for watching!

    • @BlendedFamilyMan
      @BlendedFamilyMan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the M5 was my first interchangeable lens camera, maybe I've gotten spoiled and don't know what I have. Watching your video helps with my buyers' remorse, and your 80D settings video makes me want an 80D. You've earned my subscription.
      The "can I VLOG with it?" test is a good one. Still searching for the perfect cam because VLOG recording for me means:
      -Seeing myself with a front facing screen
      -Fast, inaudible auto focus, adjustable by touch screen
      -Good images with manually adjustable aperture
      -Decent low-light performance
      -Catching it all with good sound from an external mic
      -Portability
      The recent M offerings let me check a lot of boxes above, but not all. I'm going to try getting my hands on a G85, but I also want to stick to the same brand so the colors match between my cameras.

    Do you pickup any noise through the Rode mic when the camera changes focus? I have a Nikon D5200 with the Rode Videomicro and I can hear the noise of the lens in the videos which is not ideal.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely depends on the lens. I had two Canon STM lenses which are much quieter than most and in some cases silent. In this case the F2 22mm podhelp.me/Canon22mmF2BH had some noticeable noise when it auto focused but the "kit lens" Canon 15-45mm podhelp.me/Canon15-45mmM-STMBH was almost completely silent. So it just depends on the lens. I shot a couple test shots of this very thing with these two lenses and will post that in the future.

Can I record movie in the TV mode a select the shutter speed manual or do I have to go full manual in video mode to select the shutter speed? Thanks, Mark. You might be able to do it either way. I don't have my review unit anymore so I can't check but if you put it in movie mode and can then select Tv, do that. Otherwise just put it in Tv mode, set the ISO to auto, shutter 1/50 and you'll be set to go.

    I'm just curious why you wouldn't just vlog with your a6500.
    Seems like a small cage would give good options for mic and even light mounting.
    The vertical flip screen should not interfere with a cage as much as it might with even an L-bracket.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do vlog on the 6500 but it's not the best for that function. This was part of my quest to find the "best" vlogging cam. The M6 gets close.
      Cages are great but not as efficient for vlogging if, like me, you want the most compact, native package possible. But yes that is one solution. Thanks for watching!

    Hey Ray, for vlogging, which is the better camera between Canon M6 and Canon 200D (also called Canon SL2)?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SL2 is probably a little better but it also depends on what you want to carry with you all the time. The M6 is much more compact and easy to have with you at all times but the SL2 has better auto-focus and probably a better sensor but not drastic.

    hello! How do you edit your M6 vids? I like how it had that dark tint. It's really cinematic. Also, what's your camera settings when you took that photo of that kid? TIA!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I edit in Premiere and use the Lumetri color panel most of the time but a dark tint is mostly just color grading and/or my dark backdrop;) Camera settings change all the time based on my environment but you just need to expose properly for the light that you have at that time. You can set the shutter to 1/50 and leave it. Get your exposure with aperture then ISO and don't let the image get overexposed.

      Ray Ortega oic. i want to get this camera, but the mic jack placement ruins everything! need to use viewfinder at same time and all the solutions i’ve seen are cumbersome or lower quality mic sound. that’s why i’m leaning toward the M50, even though it’s a bit bigger (not heavier)

      Mounting. There are several ways around mounting the mic in a different spot than the hot shoe which would block the flip screen. Tons of links below in these comments to various alternatives like mounting to the side and you could mount to the bottom.

    I just recently got the g3x two days ago and I have the autofocus on face detection but when i’m filming (I film in my studio with a backdrop with camera on tripod), the focus isn’t steady, it either tries to focus on me or my backdrop and it won’t keep me in focus which is what I need for beauty videos, any idea why?😩 or did I maybe just get a defected one? 😩

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have a g3x but I suspect it just doesn't have a good auto focus system. Unless it's a newer Canon or Sony, you're not likely to have an auto focus system that will work without hunting for focus now and then. Set your focus to manual so that it stays in the same spot or upgrade to something like an SL2 podhelp.me/CanonSL2zon

      This camera is garbage compared to 80d the low light isn't too bad but it's not good compared to the 80d and the canon g7x which you might find surprising

      @RayOrtega  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. I wouldn't say garbage but the 80D is very nice. That said, I wouldn't want to vlog with a brick like that;) Also the G7X I really like but it has a weird bokeh pulsing issue and no mic input. Great cam but significant compromises. Thanks for watching.

    Further to my previous comment ... I've just found on eBay pretty much the same thing I had made up. I really think it provides a good solution to the mic mounting problem. Go to eBay and search "Tripod Flash Bracket Mount". It costs about 2 bucks US and puts the hotshoe beside the camera. Boom!

    Amazing video Ray, You are a very good Vlogger keep shooting and sharing brother :) I got myself the M3 and so far happy but the focus is driving me crazy, you have had your M6 for a while now and your focus seems to be perfect, I was wondering If you would mind sharing your settings? the M3 Settings will be almost the same as your M6
    Or If you have a few seconds I wondered if you could tell me the best settings for the type of videos I do?
    In this video at around 1:43ish th-cam.com/video/NJOQPKGBlw8/w-d-xo.html You will see the focus going out and coming back, it does this a lot and sometimes takes a long time to focus. Like I said [driving me crazy] lol :) Dan

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Dan! The issue is that M3 doesn't have the same focusing system as the M6 and that's why it's not as good. The M6 has Canon's best focusing system and Canon has the best tech currently on the market. So it's not an issue of which settings to use unfortunately. On shots where you are just demoing something that isn't really moving, you'd be better off just going to manual focus.

    • @CafeRacerGarage
      @CafeRacerGarage 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray Ortega thank you for taking the time to reply brother, Iv only had the M3 for a short time so I might take it back and up grade to the M6, just didn’t want to do that until I spoke to someone with a m6 to make sure it’s not the same problem with the M6.
      Thank you 🙏

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem, thanks for watching. AF is never perfect and that's why when you really need the shot, MF is the way to go but the dual pixel in the M6 the best Canon has and it's pretty darn good most of the time.
