    Living in Canada, we have to deal with frost heaving of the ground, therefore the posts have to be at least four feet into the ground. I dig the holes about six inches deeper and put a six inch layer of gravel at the bottom. Now comes the fun part. Putting the post into the hole, plumbing it and then putting all the dirt back into the hole. Once completed the post is rock solid, the gravel allows the water to drain and also gives a bit of flexibility so that the posts don't rise and fall with the change of seasons. Easy to replace if the need arises as well. Good looking fence and gate, Chris.

  • @micahl98

    Aside from having an expert on hand, DIY is the greatest teacher! As others have pointed out, adding concrete to the post is required and by far the biggest omission here. I agree with other posts as well, regarding the additional hinges and cross member support for the gate which is lacking here. I would also use some serious caution about the pre-made panels due to the fast growth inexpensive lumber they are made with. You will find this to crack and warp very soon.

    • @AGlimpseInside
      @AGlimpseInside  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your concern. I did go back a put concrete in the posts a year ago. As for the other issues. All is great! Thanks again!

    OMG! This the best gate diy I've seen, trying to learn how to do it for my place. Hate not having money to do what I really want to. Husband doesn't care to spend $ on this and doesn't want to change it to better. Dang rabbits, rotten wood and cheeply done by previous owner. There a sloping ground and grass(I call it weeds others call it lawn). No $$$for a nice cement walkway or plants that keep rabbits, field rodents and dogs away!
    Just LOVE the happy cute pie at the end!

      A Glimpse Inside I’m in the middle of making a double wood gate, making a metal frame for it....like you I have trailers/boat/ RV. And other toys I get through mine....they just dont seem to last long, before sagging.......

    • @AGlimpseInside
      @AGlimpseInside  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Freedom 1 a 12’ 6x6 48” into the ground would eliminate any sagging along with thru bolts to attach the gate! I have not experienced Any sagging yet. However I should’ve done what I just said above

    Great ideas here. I like your solution for the gap under the gate; couple of questions about that 1. Did you anchor the threshold/ pressure treated 2X material to the ground in anyway to prevent it from rolling? 2. How has everything (especially the hinges) held up so far? My experience with that type of hinge hasn’t been good unless I through bolt them. Can’t believe there are any dislikes on this video. Thanks.

    • @AGlimpseInside
      @AGlimpseInside  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far so good on the hinges. I agree about the through bolts. My family had a farm and our long swinging gates for the stables definitely needed them. As far is the threshold it is just wedged in place in between the two posts. The threshold consist of two boards that are screwed together and then hammered in place with a really tight Friction fit between the two posts. So far everything is doing great. Thanks for watching

      Nicholas Wright thank you very much! I really like using a $70 Wagner paint sprayer. They work really well if you keep them clean. However I won't be doing that video for a little while due to the wood still being so wet. And also you can always touch up with a good quality 3 inch brush around the edges. Hope that helps

    A Glimpse Inside, only thing i probably would've done different
    would be make the hole and pipe in the 2x8 a bit larger. over
    time with expansion and contraction the drop-down piece
    might not fit as easily as when things were new. other than
    that, a very very nice job.

      The hinges are from Lowe’s they are 13 inches. And the gate frame is 5 feet wide by 5 1/2 feet tall

    what's your experience with the harbor freight vise? how long have you been using it?

      +ewijntuin it's been good. I know some people have had them break when a lot of force is applied but mine is holding up just fine!

      Great video! I highly recommend, actually, its 100% necessary, to use minimum of 4x4 steel posts for gate posts. Also, steel frames on gates that hinge on the steel gate posts. You would be shocked to see how much wood bends and flexes when opposite weight is applied.

    Any updates on the swinging doors? Would you install 3 hinges instead of 2?

    • @AGlimpseInside
      @AGlimpseInside  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are actually holding up well. No issues thus far. I usually thru-bold big doors like these however so far so good!! Thanks for the inquiry

    Awesome vid!! I’m going to do the same for my current chain link, when I turn it into a wooden fence. If you don’t mind me asking... How much did the materials all cost for everything for the gate, bottom, brackets and so on? Materials only, minis your labor of course. LOL. Thanks man. Keep’em coming.
