A guy who lives down the street from me has a commercial mowing and landscaping business. He drives an older Chevy truck with a 454 in it and regularly tows trailers with those heavy duty riding lawnmowers and other equipment. The frame and body are good so when the time came he just dropped a reman engine and transmission in it and kept driving it. He wasn't going to spend big money for a truck that was more complex, much more expensive, and far less reliable than what he has.
2016 Ford F150 XL, SuperCrew, Shortbox 5.0 with 27k miles for $26k. No wrecks, no rust, no codes. Manual windows, manual locks, no electronic gizmos.
^^^ That's the deal I snagged this year. Took two years of shopping around to find it pop up.
I have a 1974 Ford F-100, I bought it back in 2011, still use it to haul brush or whatever else I need to move around with. It's not a daily driver and I've got a fraction of money into it compared to even a decent used truck now, and it's so simple to work on my mechanic loves me. It's got a couple of leaks here and there but I doubt I would ever restore it, can't afford to even if I wanted to and the paint would get scratched up!
He's getting more feral. I love it.
I agree. I have a 2005 Toyota and a 2005 Lexus RX330. Both the same engine/ transmission. I have only ever bought 2 new cars and learnt my lesson. Never again.
BOY YOU pick some good year models.
Still driving my 2003 Silverado albeit a lot more than 88,000 miles 😊
Any truck that was "only used to plow snow" for sale in the upper Midwest will have so much rust and rot, will not be worth spit!
not to mention plowing is really hard on engines and especially transmissions!
My 01 3/4 has an 8.1 with a 5 speed alli she’s got 215k miles runs terrific. Allison is grumpy when she’s cold but smooths out. Love this drivetrain way better than the duramax combo cheaper
The old trucks were great and the new ones are junk.
Adding all the extra screens and other crap is just making it pricier
New ones are ugly too
@@lonniem9728Hell yeah new cars period are pretty ugly
@@lonniem9728 I don’t find them ugly.

5mpg is not a daily driver vehicle.
Yes, they should get 10mpg like my DD. I get 30mpg in the summer though, I transfer to my motorcycle.
@thomasterrible66 smart.
I do that too, except I get back into the Tacoma when it rains. 🌧
Our Mostly Driven Around Town 2021 Ford F-250 V8 With 10 Speed Transmission Only Gets About 6 MPH.
For a work truck it could be fine.
@@icosthop9998 Yes, I can get cold. I once rode up to Carnation in the nice day. Coming back was brutal until I got to Issaquah.
WHEN BUYING A USED VEHICLE ,a sagging headliner is usually a good indication ,the AC doesnt work or didnt work for a long time .
99% chance that the door locks don't work because the switch is bad.
I have had to replace nearly every switch on my GM truck. From the electric window switch, the door lock, the seat forward & back. Every switch that may get rained upon when the door opens when it is raining.
I took the switches apart and they are "membrane" switches rather than mechanical switches. The membrane contact point was no longer conductive.
I also have a 2007 Chevy Malibu and the exact same thing happened on the drivers side door also.
New prices for trucks are just insane. Better buy a second hand one, 3-5 years "old".
Buy a dually pickup and spend 88 thousand dollars on gasoline.
Obviously not the POS 8.1L. Get the diesel. 🙄
@@richienotsorich4303if you think getting a diesel over a gas is cheaper you need help 😂😂
@@locustvalleyfarms7241depending on the amount of weight you are towing, diesel is better, mainly because with heavier loads a gasoline engine is going to be screaming at a high rpm to maintain speed while a diesel is going to cruising at 1800 rpm
@@nicmainville9954 I'd personally argue if you're not going to be towing often, the cost of diesel fuel and maintaining the engine would not be worth it compared to a gasoline truck. Not to mention you'd have to keep up on DEF with trucks past 2012 (IIRC) and other stuff.
@@nicmainville9954 I’ve run em both and you have to consider maintaining costs.
With the price of diesel and the maintenance they require gas trucks are far cheaper to run now days for towing or regular use.
thanks for all you do. I always look forward for your videos to drop
I live in the one tiny little corner of IN where there's Emissions test (hoisted on the state by the federal gov) but that truck -2500 or bigger gets 11,000 lb plates and is emissions exempt!
Toyota tundra but not the new one
Thats a helluva find he got there, wish i could find something like that.
Yep. Keep looking, then what you are looking for pops up, grab it. That's what I do. And Scotty gives us lots of good advice.
I agree I have a 30 year old k3500 crew with a 454 230k and my daily is a 20 year old Z71 with 145k
My airbag sensors rotted in half. Think I replaced both for 80 bucks. Best to replace them before they decide to blow.
Expensive for what you’re getting but that’s as good as you’ll get these days for the price
*THANK YOU . MORE SIR ON ALL ACCESS TO OLDSCHOOL CARSSSSS❤❤❤❤*
If that transmission goes…game over
Get an old Chevy or Ford 3/4 ton and get it on the highway. Don't spend $80k for anything except where you live and it isn't in a truck.
GMT400 and GMT800 platforms are great with those Vortec V8s. Pretty solid cars but the AC Delco electronics can go to crap and people have mixed feelings about 4L60E. 4L80E with the diff lock a little better. I've sen a lot of the the 4.8, 5.3, 5.7, 6.0, and 8.1 are pretty solid. You might get some valve ticking as they get higher mileage but just live with it. With good maintenance they are easy 300k engines.
I have four 90s GM OBSs with vortecs and 4L60Es. The motors are great and the transmissions are good if you take care of them. All the trans have pans with drain plugs. I do a drain and fill every 15K miles. Complete fluid exchange and filter every 60K miles. They are not good for towing heavy loads.
8.1 liter engine... WTF? WOWW 😂❤
Great truck, I would buy it / good work horse.
ThankQ
What diagnostic scanner is that??? That thing is impressive!!
You need some expansion foam and silver duct tape to fill the rust holes.
I see two misfires on cylinder 4. If I'm reading the data correctly. 7:35 in video.
Keeping my 2003 F250 7.3 diesel.
My 87 is a Dually with a 4 SPD . It weighs like 7000 lbs empty the bed is PT lumber.
Scotty for president!
short term fuel trim being at 0 doesn't mean much when the long term is 20!!
I have a 2018 Silverado half ton 2wd. I haven't had an issues with it so far. 100k miles. I looked and I can't see any badging that says it was built in Mexico.
Good morning Grandpa. What have you been up to? Oh I went and checked out your truck. Ran the codes on the scanner and took it for a test drive. Oh, what did you think. That truck is Scotty approved.
Scotty, you make some good points but I'm not sure that vehicle is in as good shape as you seem tto indicate. Hitch ball over the rearr axle in the bed indicates this truck has been used for heavy hauling, perhaps more than the ratings for the vehicle. But the non matching front fenders on both sides tell me it's probably had a significant damage from a front end collision. I'd definitely want to have you take a close look at the front suspension and make sure the frame is straight. I'd want to see the underside to make sure there are no significant leaks and look at and smell the transmission fluid before smiling about this purchase. And it's not a good deal until we know that it is safe to drive.
bros a professional, and this is his grandsons truck surely he thought of those points already. right?
edit: im not so sure you're right bout the front fenders either. they're just a plastic flare piece. they're not mismatching at all.
scotty nice truck ,will pass anything but a gas station .😁 my 1998 chevy 2500 crew cab 306000 on the clock ,still running ,will also pass anything but a gas station ,
This is off topic of this video. What is the code number for a 2024 Chevrolet/GMC Allison built & the code number GM built or branded Allison transmissions?
I have an avalanche with an 8.1L engine, I get around 10mpg. Also have a mass airflow issue with it
No offense but that blows my mind, I know you cannot tow with a car but my new Toyota Camry gets right around 30 in the city and 40-45 on the highway.
@donniev8181 it's probably a 4 cylinder. My 90s V6 mustang gets better mileage but the odometer doesn't work so I can't tell the mpg. I've been looking for a more fuel efficient car, I like the Branco sport and the Maverick but I've heard mixed things about them. I want something with AWD because I get alot of snow.
@@green41011 yes but all I was saying is I cannot fathom 10mpg
@donniev8181 it's not hard with V8s even modern V8s get like 14-18mpg
350 V8 👍
My 2004 hd 2500 still works fine. 240k on it. If I buy another it will be pre codes.80 or older.
Scotty, I think you just might have some love for a Chevy.
I would like an older 3quarter ton inline six four speed with granny gear. Power steering only. I had one back in the day and sold it for 250 bucks.
8.1 lite gasoline will work. But towing stuff, big truck: isn't a diesel much more efficient?
unless your comercial driver and plan on keeping your truck over 500,000 miles, the diesel is overkill, if you just haul a boat every once in a while, the gas motor is much easier to maintain and repair, thus easier to own.
I have a 2000 Blazer with 240k miles still going strong. The GMT 800's are the last of the well made trucks. 2007 and up became junk
door made me lol see if can see it on the door lol
Wont need to worry about scratches
On the other side, if you want a fast car just buy a corolla GR or GR yaris 2023. I was in disbelief when I noticed how similar in speed (if not faster) these cars are compared to a Supra or Gr86 even some Mustangs.
I was surprised because they cost less than half the cost of a Supra or Gr86 and outperformed them in several ways.
Good thinking. Thanks.
Better to find an old truck with a decent body and repair / replace engine and trans and you will still come out way ahead price wise
My 2000 Silverado that I bought new has a 110,000 miles. At 71 I'm thinking it will last me the rest of my life.
*Scotty I'm looking for a new car and i like the big body's. I have 4-5 thousand and thinking about a 05-11 Lincoln town car... Or a 05-11 Toyota Avalon... Which one would you buy?
For me, the Toyota. No contest.
The new Toyotas. Right?
I'd be happy with a ck 1500 man. And if i lived in an area that tested emissions, id move pronto. 😂
How did they roll the miles back? Different computer??
One was miles and one was kilometers. Didn't you listen to the video.
Scotty. at the , 2:18 mark of this video... is that your wife's car going down the street? I don't think she used her turn signal..

Probably manufactured in Flint Michigan
What brand of used car has never been trashed by scotty...got me afraid to buy used vehicle
What did google have to do with it?
3 different color special.
Scotty...im a broke college student. Please give me a few of the most reliable used cars i can buy for around 1,200 bucks. Thank you
An old Toyota or Honda is still three times that much. You could find a grandpa car Buick with the 3.8L in that price range. They will last a long time- 300K.
Looks like the wheel is shaking like mad and engine seems tired. That 8.1 with an unloaded truck should be spinning the wheels especially in the wet. That thing been pushing mountains of snow. Things a pos. Definitely not worth 5500
A work truck with a seriously big engine will go forever when it has a manual transmission.
I will never understand why people buy these huge pickups. What for? Do they transport cattle every day?
Does it suck driving behind all these guys with no emissions in Tennessee? Serious question, are these cars choking people in other cars ? Just wondering for kids
No. Tennessee is fine.
maybe its a TN thing, i lived in OR and now Fl, no smog requirements and only notice a smokey car every once in a blue moon.
@@nn-dj2nu yeah on are family trips to Tennessee I didn't notice much, was just wondering for a person who lives in Tennessee every day. Appreciate the info
I’m gonna get sued for this. Ford’s CEO just announced “We’re shutting down” and I’m mad as hell
Damn 8.1L, what a real gas hog
Ten times less makes no sense. Not any kind of math.
that 88k truck is a high country. not a base model work truck.
A 2024 Silverado 3500HD WT dually, 4x4, and a single cab long bed trim is 51k, which is still quite egregious.
So Scotty thinks Chevys are crap unless a family member buys one? LOL!
He doesn't sh** talk OLDER Chevys.... especially the trucks!
Did you see the video of him reviewing someone's 2002 Chevy with 250k miles? That thing was solid.
@@zelowatch30It's the class of chevy from around 2000-2004--ish? Probably worth driving down south for one of those..
I have owned a few Chevys over the years. And yeah they are pretty much crap. Especially the 85 Chevy 4x4 I owned back in the late 90's. That had 80k on it when I bought it.
No, newer chevys suck....this isnt newer....its pretty simple
10 x less but it sounds like it a old money pit. At least new money pits have a warrenty.

8.1 liter. 😯 awesome
Hey Scotty, have a great day. Thanks for your daily informative videos.
Love an 8’ bed. That’s a real truck.
Hope he didn’t pay over $6k for that rusted crap.
My mom sister and I saw one of those new Tesla trucks yesterday the thing looks ugly af
His camera quickly diverted away from the lower body when he described the rust-through on the rocker panel, but you could clearly see that the gusset outrigger support on the floor (where it bolts to the chassis) is rusted through and structural integrity compromised, too. That's way more concerning (from a safety standpoint) than the rusted rocker panel. I agree with Scotty's wisdom on older trucks being more reliable than the new stuff, but I wouldn't be shopping for one anywhere in those rust-belt states where he lives. Go find one in non-humid no-salt locations like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nev, Calif, etc.
Wate a minit. That tr I ck is a single cad. But the drivers door has 4 window switches on it. What the F Scotty
The GMC Sierra is a Silverado. They're all the same garbage
The 80s and 90s ones aren't.

@@mattdarrah7443 Early 2000's (GMT800) are pretty solid too.

Great info 😊
Come on Scotty, the Chev Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are the EXACT SAME TRUCK! Give your head a shake. They come from the exact same assembly line.
Scotty Americans can’t afford new vehicles anymore can you put a list together of older cars and trucks that are among the most reliable in your opinion. You could make it a mini series. One compact one family car one suv one truck so there’s something for everyone. Thanks you’re the best.
How an earth can Americans afford to fuel such vehicles, so wasteful and inefficient
The new Silverado base pickups have a really dumb 2.7 L FOUR cylinder turbo POS. How long will that thing last? People say it sounds like a Honda Civic takin' off when you floor it. Oh boy, gotta get me one!
I drove one just to see what it was all about. I was not impressed. It has the power - but sounds like a Civic like you said, and not built to last. A friend got conned into buying one and after 300 miles, and multiple trips to the dealership for all kinds of issues - he demanded they buy it back. I am fine with my 03 4.3l v6 silverado work truck and my other two daily drivers....they are Toyotas. 🙂

That 25% import tariff on light trucks is a real b-tch, isn't it? Buy a Tesla. 0 to 60 in 2 seconds, all wheel drive, 1,020 horsepower. Most fun I've ever had with a 4 wheeled vehicle. : )

Hi Scotty - Love your videos. While watching one of your A/C realated videos you mentioned A/C gauges can be inexpensive . Do you have any you would recommend I have several cars dating back from 29 Phaeton and 54 Metro and my 70 C-20 to a couple 2000 - 2012 Hondas and Lexus. I do most of the work on them myself, usually after watching your videos. Not an expert, not a rookie, looking for something reasonable priced that will last, and get the job done.
