Dang, man. First time viewer, love your work. Couldn't agree more about the stolen Valor stuff. But I gotta say, I'm an old guy, 67 and change. My social security would NEVER cover even an entry level Gibson. But for $308 to my door, I got a chibby 3 pickup SG that absolutely smokes! SINCE I bought it under no illusions, and tell everyone who admires it what it is, and would NEVER sell it, no not never, I think no one is hurt (no even Gibson, since I wasn't gonna buy one anyway). Had 2 years of joy from that guitar, and I ain't sorry for a bit of it. Peace.
I'm an Army vet. I don't think it's at all like stolen valor. It's just business. Gibson are merely too greedy. If their instruments were worth the money, I wouldn't complain.
If Gibson weren't so blatantly cash grabbing, (making so many substandard "limited editions"), I would never consider buying a Chibson. However, Gibson are, and I am.

If it were only the headstock shape, they'd be no different than Japanese brands make for markets outside the US. I mean, not the quality, but you know what I mean.
I love my Gibson SG ,but I feel like Gibson has gone way to expensive! That's why I probably never buy another one. I'd rather buy a Chibson or any other type guitar that's affordable and rebuild it myself, Shawn! You did an excellent rebuild on that Greeny! If I wouldn't have this Cancer and now really can't afford to purchase even a cheap Chibson or any other type guitar right now , but I'm winning the battle so far, soon I will be able to purchase one and get you to rebuild it!

I bought a Chibson to use on stage and not take my expensive Les Paul and get it stolen or broken.
Mine looks fabulous and plays very well. Replaced the pickups with PAF pickups from GFS.
AND...I replaced the nut and tuners.
Other than that, it plays like my real Gibson and sounds just the same for $480, total including the extra parts.
Now, if someone knocks my LP over, I will not go mental....as my real LP is safely at home on the wall.
If Gibson just lowered their prices then chibsons wouldn't exist.
Chibsons would still exist, it's not just about new production pricing, Gibson doesn't control the resell market on the out of production models. Also models that were never actually produced and only seen in pictures like the blue/silver sparkle Ace Frehley model.

I don’t get why people are paying $50k for a Murphy Lab Gibson LP Custom Shop guitar? If I’m buying a new guitar I want it to look new!
They're collector items. The Gibson and Epiphone production models don't have that.
Play with you 100% fella I don't know what a girl I don't understand it either I don't understand what anyone would pay $5 to take a brand new guitar and have it turned into something that looks old it's it's the craziness of the the Gen z is the craziness of woke it's all that crap it's all falls into the same category when the lump it all together it's Insanity I always tried the hardest to keep my guitars looking as nice as possible polishing them cleaning them after using them since I've gone blind slowly over the years and I can't see anything going on with the finish of my guitar as much anymore anyway unless I hold them underneath a bright light and I can see that they shine LOL that's about it hopefully right that they shine That's the whole idea of a new guitar and a nice guitar but yeah so I've given up on worrying about if they get dinged or banged I don't like that feel it anymore its just accept it but that's a far cry from buying or having someone take my car and make it look like a piece of s***so I guess in a long, I agree with you 110% sincerely Bob the blind bags on guitar

As long as it is sold without the Gibson or whatever brand they are knocking off's logo, then im okay with Chibsons, particularly when some of them are as good or better (or can be) than the flagship brand for a weeks worth of Mcdonalds meals money. Then do exactly what Sean did and drop in a couple SH18 whole lotta humbuckers for 100-200 used/new, change the tuners, oil the nut, and wala!
A replica is one thing but my biggest issue with Chibsons is that they could easily be set with after market pickups and passed off as 'real' not saying on a large scale but why spend your money on something like a Chibson in stead of a Harley Benton or Firefly guitar

@@_Yep_Yep_ They are all made in the same region but HB is its own brand no desire to rip off other names. Firefly does some questionable stuff like with their EVH 'tribute' but also makes good entry level guitars that don't direct copy others

IMHO, the greatest Gibson that never was is Slash's Glodie. The guitar that saved Gibson and even they couldn't make a good replica.

@@terrorbirds9835 Sounds to me like you're the one with anxiety , just because I take care of my guitar's doesn't mean I don't enjoy playing them. I just don't beat on them or bang them around , I play at home and put my guitars in the racks when done , it's actually pretty simple. There's no reason any guitar should be all dented and scratched up if you're playing it normally , of course you'll get some scratches around the pickguard and wear on the fretboard. That's different from your guitar looking like it fell off a roof...

What did you use to bring out the grain? What color name was the final stain color used over the tiger stripes? You do beautiful work man!

My nephew worked in Asia for one of the Chibson sellers. It's the Wild West (East). Until their governments crack down sadly there's not much the manufacturers can do.
It's only counterfeit if you try to sell it as a genuine Gibson. I have a copy 335 - I swapped out the tuners with Grovers, Epiphone pickups with Golden Age, mickey mouse pots and switch with CTS and switchcraft. It plays and sounds great - and it didn't cost me 3500 bucks and I'm not worried about scratches or it getting lifted as much as if it were a genuine one. When people ask about it, I tell them it is a Chinese copy. A quick way to tell the difference is to look at the truss rod adjuster - Chinese use Allen sockets , Gibson use acorn nuts. I also have a genuine 57 Les Paul Custom - with an acorn nut - but it cost me a fortune and I never take it out of the house - now that was a waste of 7500.
I could really use that tool that you used to remove the volume & tone knob nuts/ hardware. Looking for the correct size socket or box end wrench gets old. I like that tool you used! Where can I obtain one?

I bought a pearly gates a looonnnggg time ago, and it still is an amazing guitar. It was light, the neck was nice. I put real Gibson parts on it, kluson tuners , CTS, sprague orange drops, bone nut, tweaked the action and intonation …A set of Duncan JB 6 and 8….and it’s a monster. I have $700 in it, and I’m not afraid to have a beer thrown at me anymore.

Hey Sean! Love yer vids! Can you do a breakdown of the Leo Jaymz single cut standards? Basically a chibson without "Gibson" branding. I'm curious what you think of their build quality and the new Alnico v pickups they supposedly use. Red burst one on Amazon is under $200.
Your allusion of the medals made so much sense to me… you know I’ve seen on eBay a knock of of Mike ness 1976 Les Paul gold top reliced and it looks good . 330$ but , if I’d get it I’d ask them to put 1945 on the headstock ( one of his song title) instead of Gibson. ❤
The positive side of things is, you can use those stock pickups as a microphone, should you need one!

Have 2 real Gibsons and 2 Chibs. I actually prefer the Chibs. Plays and feels better. Just my preference.

Relic-ing a guitar is just more stolen glory. My mid-'90s LP was brand new 30 years ago, and has some dings and scratches (but it's original unbroken headstock!). Unless the relic-process somehow makes it sound or play better, its just baloney. LOVE that people pay extra for someone to beat up their guitar for no reason. If anyone wants, I will happily relic your guitar for $1000. Sound like a scam? So does the custom shoppe doing it! :D

Honestly, I want folks to see that I only need a Grote guitar and a solid state amp and a few fx to pull off a gig.
I would feel goofy showing up to a gig that paid 100$ per man with a 3000$ guitar and a boutique amp.

I agree with you, it is stolen valor. I have a Chibson LP Custom I had made with stainless steel frets; sn# is my birthday. I put EMG '77 in it and it kicks ass. I had to do fret work of course. Wore out a diamond file on it. Took a lot of work. But it is mine and will never be sold as a copy. I hate relic a guitar after it was made nice to begin with; it is just stupid.
Relic-ing makes about as much sense as buying a new car and asking the car lot to key and wreck the front end first!

I have a few of these. They all came with Epiphone inards.
I would bet Gibson realized they couldn’t stop this so they are all made wherever Epiphone is made or at least sourced.
Can you @16:34 use like 1000 grit sandpaper or something besides a razor blade on the frets to "clean" them up??
He was going extra hard here which makes sense for this guitar. Razor blade with light even pressure is a great way to clean up actual dark wood fretboards. Follow that with a proper oil treatment and it will be tip top
The razor blade is much faster and way more efficient than 1000 grit sandpaper. The sand paper would get clogged up every minute or two.

I purchased a firefly LP style guitar last year (really nice guitar) out of the box installed coil splits and changed the PU'S with some Iron Gear (made in England) but there very inexpensive but sound awesome - my first LP style always been a tele/super strat guy but man a get the LP thing now Love the guitar - really informative video -

Not a fan of these Chibsons . Seen a guy buy one for $1500 thought it was real it looked great till my tech pointed out everything even a average player may miss. ( Purchase is always from road side rent a space sale at Farmers markets ) not a problem at music stores most in my area ( that still exist almost extinct ) will honor a fake ' if it got by the counter kid thats rare . Its not a big deal till people sell them as Gibson's , I actually like the Ace Frehley's LP, I couldnt buy the metal flake for what the ax cost its the resale people who aint cool on disclosure its a fake. Really like how the flame pops after your re- finishes ' . I , have learned something' about foame tops. That LP special with the bolt beck looked amazing. Good skills you show, ill subscribe ! I've got three counterfeit Chibsons and Chenders. I bought them AFTER I popped for big bucks on the real deals, and I use them to hone my luthier skills on. That way, I won't devalue a good guitar. I won't sell them, probably, because they're now pretty good guitars, and if I do, I'll be up front on what they are. Man, that's the best I can do.
