I have one with i7-3720qm, 8gb 1600Ghz, 250gb 850 evo, Nvidia NVS 5200m discrete graphics and a 1600x900 screen. I got it for $350 on ebay. It also came with the 87Whr 9 cell extended battery. It is my current workstation. I got a docking station and laptop stand for it and use it with my monitor. It works very well for Autocad, solidworks and eagle.
before i got this PC i didnt have much respect for dell products. i now have much more respect for them mainly because of how easy it is to open the machine up and upgrade components.
It's interesting that you have one of these. The Latitude e6400's/e6500's were popular with businesses who choose Dell as their vendor. We support/manage about 200 of these at the accounting firm I do IT for.
Would this make a decent laptop for a college-bound student in 2017? I like the model with the i7 quad core and a 9cell battery. Compared to the newer laptops the performance seems to be almost double only at the expense of battery. The newer machines are more power efficient but have less overall power. The only downside is that this machine is nearing 5 years old. My other option is an e5470, but it has a built in battery and scores 2000 less passmark points. Only pro of the new one seems to be DDR4 and is not old.

Yes. Especially when the charger is in the same bag. I just got one this month. I use it for coding and gaming. But my concern is the heating. It gets really hot.

Nice video, Id say if you really wanna speed it up and spend about $25.00 you should get a 64GB SSD since its not your main machine. Just to speed it up and to have it as a secondary machine I think that would be a good idea. Anyways how is it working these days? Have you ran into any problems? I myself love Dell products, I have most of the time had great luck with them and honestly debating on buying one of these to add to my collection. I like how they look and what they have to offer.

im using the same laptop but with i7 3740qm and gtx 680 via expresscard slot (eGPU) .swapped the dvd caddy to a 1tb 2.5 hdd for storing games. got 8k on 3dmark11 which puts mid range gaming laptops to shame.
Miku Lover with the use of an external graphics or eGPU adapter. you won't get 1 - 1 PC performance (bandwidth speed is limited to 2.5 or 5 gbps, whichever your laptop supports) but still performs better than most of the dedicated laptop gpus. you can find a lot eGPU videos here on youtube.

I've never liked the look of these machines, always been more of a thinkpad guy. It just annoys me how magnesium is superior to Aluminium but the magnesium on the E6430 feels too cheap and light imo.

Well you have the E6420 and the E6430. Well now you have to now take a step down from the E6420 and next pick up a 6410 because they are amazing if you want to play The Sims 2. I own myself and it runs it no problem playing the game. Nice for 2010.

900p is the best you can get for these, and they cost about $60. Add the LVDS cable on top of that and you're looking at about $80.

I'm a pc tech for a computer refurbishing company and from my experience the dell latitude take a lickin' better than thinkpads. Go with dell.

oh I'm sorry not all of us have the money to afford such MacBook pro and to my thoughts for work environment and apps compatibility you have far less issues with that than you would with a mac laptop don't get me wrong the MacBook pro is awesome laptop but only for people who can comfortably afford it to my experience I stick with windows running laptop and dell latitude is awesome for me .

+Umair Babar It should be possible. A friend and I tried Hackintoshing it and we got it to boot, but it ran horribly with no graphics acceleration.
I also tried. It runs perfectly but problem was trackpad, wifi and usb ports were not working.

Press "Fn + uparrow" to increase the light of keyboard
Press "Fn + downarrow" to decrease the light of keyboard
It was "right arrow key" instead of "uparrow key" and "downarrow key"
