Just picked up an e4200 without an SSD on eBay for $15. Latitudes are incredibly solid choices and I'm very excited for it to arrive!

If anyone ever asks about what to get, I have three suggestions. ThinkPads, Latitudes, or HP Elitebooks. All are built tough, easy to disassemble for upgrades and more. If you are willing to look, you can find one of those old laptops for a good deal. All of those laptops may last a lot longer than any current consumer machine.

Pretty good list of suggestions. 👍

Hp elitebooks are fantastic. And certain models like the 8770w can have their gpu swapped for up to a gtx 980m. Since they have mxm modules

I've always thought Dell Latitude as 'thing that closer to a ThinkPad without being a ThinkPad'. In my mind, E5440 are solid alternative to both E440, L440 and maybe even T440! And could have been more interesting if next time you've managed to find a E6440 (more premium machine with aluminium lid, was T440p competitor way back in 2014)

We shall see what comes next that I'm able to find. You never know.

Besides collecting ThinkPads, I have the E6540 which is the bigger brother of the E5440 for site work. Added 3 SSDs in the 4G slot, 2.5 inch bay and DVD bay. Total of 4.5TB.
Only issue is the crappy TN 15.6 panel. IPS panel for the E6540 cost about 1/2 of the laptop itself.
Another upgrade is the backlit keyboard. Unfortunately, like TP, the palm rest will become sticky after several years.

    Hello Latitude E5440 users!
I also have the same laptop and I want to tell you that this laptop can actually run at 144Hz display, even though it has a 60Hz panel. I did the same overclocking and now I am getting buttery smooth display. If anyone want to know, how to do that, just ask in the reply section, I'll happily help :)

@@iggysmalls7454 Hi, congratulations on your new laptop. If you're asking if upto 144hz overclocking worth giving a try, then let me tell you, the display becomes so smooth with all the transitions and movements becoming smooth too, and if your machine has a capable hardware, then high fps can really prove a great difference for experience, while gaming. 😀

The E5470/E5570 is a better choice for now. It has a quad-core processor option, an M.2 slot which supports both SATA and NVMe, a better keyboard, better screen option (up to 1080p touch screen), and Thunderbolt option (so you can use external graphics card)

Another hint that this isn't an ISO French AZERTY keyboard is the Enter/Return key: it conforms to the ANSI standard (a.k.a. it's not the 'big ass' Enter key found on ISO and JIS).

I have replaced HDD with SSD & RAM from 4GB to 8GB. With these changes I am getting on my i5 CPU. I purchased a second hand with some school Windows license. It is without camera & Bluetooth, can I put camera some way? Or have to use an external webcam. I am fine without Bluetooth so far & when I need a Bluetooth dongle would be a cheap solution.
Also, can it be updated to Windows 11?

    • @LaptopRetrospective

Depending on what you paid, it may not be cost effective to install a webcam. Bluetooth is often integrated with the WiFi card now. Unofficially you could use Tiny11 to run Windows 11 if it isn't 8th gen Intel.

Presuming Bluetooth is present and functional, you might want to give this thread a read. Looks like there is a way to kill it via a switch depending on the BIOS settings? I know it is for a different model, but might be worth checking. You can also try and download the drivers manually by using the service tag on Dell's website.

I have one of these that I refurbished recently! The model that I was able to salvage has the dedicated GPU with 2 GB of V ram. Potential for light to moderate gaming. These laptops are starting to get long in the tooth so you have to make them, tempting to future/prospective buyers. I maxed out the ram to 16 GB swapped in a 1 TB Samsung Evo 870, slotted in a one terabyte mSata card for a total of 2 TB of storage and a raid zero configuration. Also upgraded the wireless to the Intel 7260 card which has a maximum of 875 MBPS. Compared to the 300 that came with the 6235 card. Swapped in a new six cell battery and that is as far as you can go with one of these. You cannot upgrade the processor unless you completely swap out the motherboard as it is soldered on.
