[LYRICS] - 1:06 Somebody hold me too close. Somebody hurt me too deep. Somebody sit in my chair, And ruin my sleep, And make me aware, Of being alive. Being alive. Somebody need me too much. Somebody know me too well. Somebody pull me up short, And put me through hell, And give me support, For being alive. Make me alive. Make me alive. Make me confused. Mock me with praise. Let me be used. Vary my days. But alone, Is alone, Not alive. Somebody crowd me with love. Somebody force me to care. Somebody make me come through, I'll always be there, As frightened as you, To help us survive, Being alive. Being alive. Being alive!
This was so perfect in the context of this film. I'd already teared up, but by the end of this song tears were just streaming down my face & I didn't care. If you want to hear a great pull out all the stops Broadway version that tops Babs, check out Raul Esparza.
@@ozkey1558 I checked Esparza's version (the original version) and it's so beautiful. He has a strong, powerful voice that connects so well with the tone of the song. His vibratos are stunning. I personally think that the lyrics do most part of the job because they are touching and you can relate to them in any way you'd like; whether it's a marriage, a friendship, a family relationship or just the fact that you can't always be alone. Beautiful song, in any shape.
@@saraweeknds Definitely some all time great lyrics. I so love the vulnerability & immediacy Adam Driver brought to his performance. That tonal shift when it goes from being a fun piano bar goof-around to a genuine catharsis. And that sigh at the end; Oof. Just give him the Oscar already.
@@flannerymonaghan-morris1317 I think he probably meant the original Esparza rendition. There's several of his posted- from his run on Broadway in Company, but also awards shows & talk shows & tributes, etc.
I like how he starts off the first verse as a kind a of parody of the pain he is going through, sits back down and gets some perfunctory applause from his friends. Then he sits down, thinks a little and puts his finger up as if to say "I'm not done yet". As he progressed through the second verse, it becomes increasingly clear to his friends and to himself how cathartic this song really is. No one claps at the the end. His sigh at the end represents remorse about the past and a hope for the future at the same time. Been there.
I grew up listening to Michael Crawford's cover of this. His version is so lovely, and I'm glad to now have this raw cover to listen to as well. There's just something about listening to people sing who aren't singers. Adam clearly has some technique training, but.. he's an actor first and foremost, and that difference is really interesting to hear.
This took a lot of chutzpah for him to do this. A man who's not trained to sing, professionally. Yet he brings an organic, passionate element to it. Driver is a gifted actor and 1 of my favorites He sings this as an average guy, not a Hollywood superstar... The song always moves me because it's so damn true! Everyone could relate to this music 👏😄
When I first watched this film in November of 2019 I loved the song and the scene cause I thought it was super powerful and deep. Back then I was single so I guess the real power of the song didn't hit me up until last week when I broke up with someone who I thought was the love of my life. Its honestly really crazy how songs and performances like this can really like age properly and have a deeper meaning once you kinda go through it I gues?
You're 100% right. I think My Chemical Romance said it well with "you only hear the music when your heart begins to break". I hope things have improved for you since you wrote this comment. Sending lots of hugs to you - nothing hurts quite like heartbreak. x
I just seen the movie, the feeling he put in the song moved me. I’ve been listening to other versions but Adam Driver’s hits my heart like a sledgehammer. Goodnight
TrashDads Den I’m not saying I don’t think he will, but I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Phoenix has continually bashed the Oscars and the Academy don’t take nicely to that kinda stuff; they completely ignored De Niro this year for what he said about the Oscars. There’s a high chance Phoenix will get less votes due to 1. Having already won the Golden Globe 2. Bashing the Academy multiple times and 3. The controversy around Joker. It’s much more likely than you might think that Driver will win. Not saying Driver will wi, but it’s definitely gonna be a close one. EDIT: And on top of all that I personally just thought Driver gave a better performance than Phoenix did, even though Phoenix’s was amazing too.
I honestly wish they ended it with this scene I Loved the ending they gave but this scene he was just so raw and it would have been such a great ending.
I almost thought it did end with that and I’ll admit that would have been a great ending considering all the emotions you’re left with after the scene.
I would love to hear Adam Driver sing My Way by Frank Sinatra. I feel like it would sound good. His voice is good enough to enjoy but also imperfect enough to be believable. That's why I feel a lot of emotion in his singing.
If Adam Driver (AKA Kylo Ren) can sing this Sondheim song, I bet he can be awesome at playing Jim Henson in the upcoming biopic Muppet Man, which involves Henson singing some songs.
Daisy Ridley sings lovely. She has a beautiful voice.I hope someday they could work again together in a musical or a romantic comedy with a happy ending this time.Their chemistry is unbelievable.

this song was by far one of the best moments of the movie
Agreed
Probably because the rest of the film was depressing
I know it’s about the music, which is impeccable, but these posters are beautiful. It reflects the entire movie honestly. I love it.
I was thinking exactly the same. They're so emotional
they look like star wars posters lol
ADAM Driver was Amazing in this! An Oscar worthy performance!

Beautiful performance. Beautiful posters.
I literally ugly-cried during this scene. What a beautiful song-beautiful movie!
I could understand that..
His performance is so passionate and organic.
You can feel his frustration
That Is what a great actor does!
the most beautiful movie in 2019 and this poster is brilliant
Absolutely heartbreaking. I cried my eyes out. The emotion he pulls out of himself singing this, is just... oh God. I feel it in my veins.
My favourite film of the year! Absolutely wonderful
kylo ren sings one of the saddest musical theatre songs. what a timeline we live in.
Dylan Mendel dude have some respect and call him Adam Driver. he’s not only Kylo Ren
@FizZeld nah
@@SurrealiamPrime It's just a joke though. We all know Adam is multi-talented.
And now we’ve got a virus

I personally prefer Adam's version rather than Barbara's. It's full of emotion. Also, he's not that bad at singing.
