I mean, I think what you mean is that it’s not a “technically polished” performance, but that that’s a big part of what you love about it. It’s raw and imperfect, and beautiful, and messy, and just really really real.
I’m trying to be very precise about exact meaning, but I 100% agree with what I’m pretty sure you were getting at here.
What I’m thinking is: It’s a massive performance, so powerful, and so impossibly packed with f***ing feeling... and by that measure alone, at least to me personally, that IS really good singing.
Adam seems like kind of a humble guy. He might not think of himself as a singer, but after hearing this, I sure as hell do.

This is one of the most emotionally beautiful scenes I have seen in my life. While watching the movie I paused it as soon as I heard the opening notes on the piano. The friend I was watching with isn't familiar with Company, so I stopped and explained the point in the musical where this song is set to her then pressed play, and as soon as Adam started to sing we both just started sobbing.
The parallel with what this song means in Company and for Bobby's character is almost the exact opposite of how it is used here by Charlie. Bobby is realizing he does want to be loved, he does want a deeply connected relationship, he finally realizes that he wants and needs a partner to share the rest of his life with. But here, Charlie has just lost all of that but the feeling of it all is still there. Instead of an empty piece waiting to be filled like we see with Bobby, it is a space that was vacated and he's trying to accept that loss and accept the pain because that is all he can do. In the words of Sondheim, "alone is alone, not alive."
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk...

This song is an unbelievably perfect choice. When I first heard it in the movie, my heart broke. In the musical company, the main character sings this song after spending a whole musical contemplating marriage and ultimately weighs up that despite the negatives of it, he ultimately longs for it. In the musical it's optimistic, here it's just heartbreaking. Charlie is longing for what he's lost, instead of what he's never had.

I just spent the last hour listening to the different versions of this too many times. The thing this one does more than any of the others is keeping it grounded. To really understand why the others are performed the way they are you need the build up of the whole show. It lands different when you see Bobby's story and his emotions getting more and more pent up and frantic until it bursts out with this song. If you hadn't watched this full movie and seen the emotional build up in Charlie's grief and stress, it wouldn't have landed as hard as it did, either. Different circumstances are behind this performance compared to Company so it's performed differently but hits just as hard.

Not alive" he's practically pleading to the audience and that he is wants to feel all the bad and good but just not alone. But the most important part is the last seconds. Just a deep sigh with no applause this time. Amazing

Someone to hurt you too deep,
Someone to sit in your chair,
    To ruin your sleep.
    [Adam making all voices]
That's true, but there's more to it than that.
Is that all you think there is to it?

Come on, you're on to something, Bobby. You're on to something.

Someone to pull you up short
    And put you through hell.
You see what you look for, you know. You're not a kid anymore, Robby. I don't think you'll ever be a kid again, kiddo.
    Being alive
    Being alive
    Being alive!
Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. *Want* something!
    Want *something!*
    Somebody, hold me too close,
    Somebody, hurt me too deep,
    Somebody, sit in my chair
    And ruin my sleep
    And make me aware

    Being alive.
    Somebody, need me too much,
    Somebody, know me too well,
    Somebody, pull me up short
    And put me through hell
    And give me support
    For being alive,
    Make me alive
    Make me alive.
    Make me confused,
    Mock me with praise,
    Let me be used,
    Vary my days.
But alone is alone, not alive.
    Somebody, crowd me with love,
    Somebody, force me to care,
    Somebody, make me come through,
    I'll always be there,

I think having no claps at the end is such a great directorial decision. I like to think the claps were happening, but Charlie is so consumed by the after effects of divorce in isolating him from the rest of the world. He feels like nobody truly understands his feelings; no one can hear him. Claps often signify the applause of a performance too, but the lack of clapping tells us this is no longer a performance. He truly is the narrator of the piece.

I really love that this performance doesn’t scream “incredible singer” like Charlie was secretly amazing the whole time, he just sings like a guy that has a theatre background, halfway decent, and better lyrical knowledge.
In the show Company, this song is the Protagonist Bobby’s grand realisation that he is capable of love and is ready to be loved. However, this song comes after Charlie has lost everything except his son, he loved and was costed for it. Charlie is alone, but also incredibly present in the moment. He’s able to finally accept his loss and move on to the challenges ahead.

I like how he starts off the first verse as a kind a of parody of the pain he is going through, sits back down and gets some perfunctory applause from his friends. Then he sits down, thinks a little and puts his finger up as if to say "I'm not done yet". As he progressed through the second verse, it become increasingly clear to his friends and to himself how cathartic this song really is. No one claps at the the end. His sigh at the end represents remorse about the past the a hope for the future at the same time. Been there.

Out of all the phenomenally Acted out scenes in this movie, somehow when he sings with so much feeling, is what made me bawl like a child, felt like he was channeling his pain the only way he was familiar with, a domain that he could navigate and control in all this. The 'being alive' really hit hard, because of how intensely he sung it, how level his voice was, tho his predicament was anything but, and the irony is heartbreaking.

Bravo Adam Driver.

Karen, there is a huge diference between the roling lead gave to both: Adam acted surrounded by greatest artists (SJ, LD, RL...), he was just another one and made his space with a great job. In the other hand, Phoenix was given an entire movie to be dedicated to. Do you remember any other performance at Joker? This is what turns AD great in Marriage Story: the film was not his but he acted so balanced with his partners that became great.

He has a perfect "Sondheim" voice in that it's real and emotional. He hits all the notes beautifully, finds the rhythms and cadence of the language, and makes you feel as if he's thinking of it IN the moment. For the scene, it's performative for his actor friends, but it's like he's also Bobby at the same time. So many levels, and he nails all of them. It took me a while to see this film on NetFlix because it seemed depressing to me, potentially having me revisit painfully emotional experiences similar to those in my own life. I am the better for having seen it, as it is a truly great movie. This true-to-life cinematic achievement made me cry in some scenes, but it was a cathartic experience. All the film's elements resonated powerfully: The comfort of family in one's cozy home; the shock at experiencing what turns out as the unforesessn ephemeral nature of a relationship once thought to be ironclad to last forever; the raw nature of ensuing conflict and confrontation; the indignity of property distribution during divorce proceedings; the instant regret of hurful words uttered in anger; the palpable pain of separation; the vestigial affection post-separation; the ultimate peace one somehow makes with it all. I hadn't seen this lead actor in anything before, and all I can say is step on my throat, Adam Driver, you rudely large man; break my fingers, you brooding mountain; crush my rib cage, you load-bearing behemoth.

So happy to be around people in the comments who actually got a grasp on the acting here. I watched this with my family and seeing them daunt by it, calling it boring kinda broke me inside. Me having to explain on why the people in the movie’s faces changed to a certain way, it does greatly express the feelings through they’re faces and shouldn’t be a struggle to misjudge how they’re feeling. I found it ignorant how “Charlie” couldn’t see Nicole’s real apprehension and was sorta blinded by his narcissism, but in reality that’s how we all are. Not seeing how our significant other could be acting such a way. “Ohh I thought I knew you” well you did, and you do. But not everything is spoon fed about the actions of your others, it’s what makes strong stable relationships actual genuine, when the two know eachother like they’re right hand.

Possibly my favorite scene in a film of 2019, Adam Driver blew me away this this along with the rest of the film. Such an Incredible film.
