- This time we're in Munich and using what we have learned so far to gain high scores in Mini Motorways, even if it involves ruining the life of one resident to save the others... From the makers of Mini Metro comes Mini Motorways! A highway engineering puzzle game and in this video I, a highway designer of 10 years, see if my real life engineering skills help me become better at the Mini Motorways puzzle game by segregating different colours to fix bad traffic!

This isn’t a road game, it is a development control game. Don’t block all development, just guide it. I think you should place roundabouts as soon as you get them. They do nothing while in storage and don’t help with emergency fixes due to their size requirements. Put them down as soon as you get them at potential choke points and they block development. Also run parallel roads next to each other instead of one apart so houses can’t spawn between. Make fake roundabouts using 3x3 road squares so once you get roundabouts they can fill in these spots. In the beginning congestion is ok from odd road configurations if it reduces congestion latter in the game by making it easier to build. I would call these future corridors using road bits. Road bits do nothing while in storage. So lay them out. Tear them up only when required to. Don’t hook up every house but do keep escape passages clear using road bits. Running roads along the side of rivers early on helps block development that can block bridges. And as you know, the more bridges the better! :-)
I fucking love the roundabouts but I am curious-
Are there situations in which I should use the traffic lights? I have definitely been underutilizing them but I don't know when to use them and I don't want to have a situation that 'could have been made better if I didn't use them at all'
@@nicestpancake from what i can tell they help on long strips of road when you have a crossroads so that houses don't have to slow down when passing.
@@PierceCarrell yup once there's an intersection the cars will slow down regardless, so adding the traffic lights eliminates the slowing down when they have the green light
@@LindzieBurns Generally traffic lights are good for the really awful crossroads you already have and cant really fix, basically if traffic slows down to a stop almost anyway traffic light will at least make it smoother.
@@nicestpancake Unless you have a crossroad where every car is slowing down, there really is no use for them. In fact, if you don’t have that specific scenario (granted, a common one.) I would go as far as to say that they’re harmful.

Tip: Shops will never spawn adjacent to shops or houses (they used to, an update changed that)! Likewise, houses won't spawn adjacent to shops.

Just a tip: any cross intersection with 4 roads will slow the cars, even if there isnt traffic. You can see it here 1:05

@@GummieI but remember I think on this game sometimes the best option is to do an intersection because then you will just waste a ton of road pieces so you have to find a balance

Quick tip. Each business has a one tile ring all the way around it that is a no build zone (for houses as well as businesses) so no need to block anything within a tile of a business. It's also handy for leaving one space for an emergency road if you need it.
Every so often that buffer rule gets broken. A bug I'm guessing, not much you can do about it.

Hey Matt - All shops have to spawn with a 1 square boarder around them, thus allowing so they can have a full use of road access... hope that helps
Do roads block that 1 tile border or are they included in the 1 tile border?

A way to have a road go over another road. Technically you can do that with the motorways, but no one would spend a motorway on that
You'd have to give a lot of them at once to outweigh the reduced chance of getting a real motorway though.

You can restart levels at the beggining to get the best placement of the first house and market, its simple and easy to do and makes work easier
Hey, creating 4 way junctions makes the cars slow down ahead of them. I would suggest to not create them if you don't want traffic lights
He hates them irl as well.
The map will expand quickly when you prevent space for a "Stops" to spawn. This leads to moments when you missed a newly widened area and it left enough space for a new "Stop" and you don't have enough roads to get the houses connected.
So at least plan the locations you want the "Stops" to spawn by leaving the space for them to do so.
I was literally thinking of that chinese man with the house while you were making the surrounded house.
hey Matt, FYI when you use roads on the diagonals such as at 10:30 it only takes as many road tiles as it does to go straight across

One thing I've noticed while playing is that all cars slow down when approaching an intersection, even if they're the only car approaching it.
Reducing the number of intersections can help boost your score.

10:10 The story Matt is referencing isn't from a Chinese airport but rather a Japanese airport. It's called the Sanrizuka Struggle; in 1971 the Japanese government built the Tokyo Narita airport on top of existing village farmland and the land-seizure was protested by the Japanese Communist and Japanese Social Democratic parties. Five houses still exist on top of/within the airport to this day, and one still actually farms the land.
i think the main problem of the game is that buildings upgrade demanding more but still not get more parking spaces

A nice way to manipulate spawning using Road is to use single road tiles. Since they take up two spaces and adding onto the roads only adds one space.
This was a good demonstration of why you want to separate malls of same color too or cars end up going all around the map and not to the closest mall

@@highpath4776 no it works this way mall spawns a shopping thing, and then the closest house that is connected and has car in garage sends a car... But if you have traffic and whatnot closest one might be all the way on the other side of the map

Pro tips don't just separate colors but make sure that each house can only potential go to one supermarket also only spawn block the areas right next to your roads so you aren't forced to move any roads because supermarkets spawn next to them

That house shown was actually quite a while ago and has been knocked down. However, there is a similar incident as of last year. The Haizhuyong bridge has been built around a house. Known as nail houses. Went on a rabbit hole journey last year in lockdown when I found out about them 😅

16:30 there were literally 10 white houses only 5 blocks down from the white market on the left with a timer that the cars were going around a long way, all you needed was a short straight road and they would have taken the quicker path.
Remember that you can move motorways, I would always use them if possible and just move them as needed

In the beginning, in that 4-way junction, the cars slow down regardless of the traffic. If one maximizes the number of 3-way junctions in order to minimize the 4-way intersections probably survives a bit longer In the late game. Love the content of this channel.
I went from 1100 ish to 1300 ish just by doing 3-way junction trees everywhere - it's a very stark difference

Tip: if you pay attention to the angle of your junctions, you can prevent the cars from slowing down when they get to them!

If you make "just add water" pancakes with orange soda, it is absolutely amazing. You dont add syrup on the pancakes once cooked. Just eat them plain.
traffic lights make cars go faster past intersections, so on T-junctions where a not very busy road joins a busy road they are helpful at letting cars past quickly.
This has very quickly become my favorite series on TH-cam
There really needs to be an update in which the devs add an option to choose a filter or a security guard, which basically blocks a road to a specific color
and the real problem in the late game are the double plots as they mix colours even if you have them totally segregated
so a person might use 2 double plots to go to a system not connected to their own
which is what happened at the end
nah, to be even more realistic, the game could allow you to bulldoze less colored houses (in the EM spectrum, you know what color is the most colored color in the EM spectrum) with roads and shit.

Making 4 way junction will make cars slow down before reaching it even if there aren’t any other cars pasaing, you should avoid it and this is what traffic lights for in this game :)
Your channel double in like a month absolutely mental
You shouldn't make a 4-way (or more) crossing. When 4 or more roads cross, cars will slow down there. Slower cars means longer drive times, which mean you need more houses per factory.
I've had orange cranberry bread. It's pretty good. I imagine orange bread without the cranberries would be alright. Perhaps toasted with some butter and marmalade. Really orange it up. The orange cranberry bread was one of the mixes my mom got with a bread maker twenty years ago. We hardly ever used the bread maker, but when we did, it was great.

Worst of all, it's not the only time that kind of thing happened.
Also in China was a house that was refused to be sold for pennies. All the other's around him sold out. The company frustrated that they didn't sell, and ruined their plans to build at that location. So they demolished all the other houses and dug out a 25×16 meter pit all around the house.
Four weeks later they ended up having to abandon the house, when heavy rains fell and started filling up the pit, and after 2 days the house collapsed into the pit/lake. The home owner got nothing AND the construction company got a deep pond.

There’s a place in the UK where a person refused to sell there house to the government so the government had to have the motorway split and go either side of the house.
There's a little tiny house in New York as well, that was the inspiration for the movie UP! Just this adorable little cottage surrounded by big glass and concrete skyscrapers.
To keep colour apart,even if there is cross roads needed put a traffic light there,so that only one colour can pass at a time
