Oh my, that poor Janet Waddell, wife of the Reverent John Edmondston. She did not only survive her husband, but also 2 of her daughters and her son. A parent who survives her/his children is so sad. at 16:50
Let's not forget amongst the grave sites the marvelous ironwork, all the filligree fencing with lovely details on the grave gates, & enclosures, that is a lost art or becoming one ...
Comfortable Georgian style apartment with views of the picturesque cemetery from the living room and bedroom windows. You can touch the gravestones without leaving your home.
Great video Dan thank you, and I appreciate you showing a little the street scene of Edinburgh. Considering that my Grandfather William walked those streets. It's very interesting to see. Thank you for sharing.
Because of this video, my husband and I just decided that we want to put our professions or more information about ourselves on our headstone. It's almost as if you're meeting the people as you read a little about what they did in life. Thank you for sharing this.
Interessante video, grazie e complimenti ❤ Però non sono stata capace a capire ancora cosa era depoto nel mausoleo se i defunti vengono sepolti sotto terra nello stesso mausoleo RIP ai tutti defunti 🖤🌹
Thank you for once again bringing me to a place i will likely never see in person. I love your walks. I told my husband just last night that he may need to fly me to your side of the world just so i can tour cemeteries 😂 Joanna from MO, USA.
The houses/apartments in this video are like the ones i read in the book Greyfriars Bobby. They were built during the Georgian era, i think. Children in the book can just jump out or sneak out of their windows and step on graves in the kirkyard where Bobby, the everybody's dog lovingly dwell near his master's grave. On these graves the children can study their lessons or play with Bobby under the moon. I imagine that graveyards were treated unspooky back in the days. ❤❤❤
They are all old mausoleums and kind of creepy tbh. thats sad that no one comes to visit them anymore. They’re all forgotten and gone to nature. And hopefully reborn too
WOW!! I am new subscriber from last nite & have been streaming your videos!! Have enjoyed them all!!❤. Happy to hear correct pronunciation of Edinburgh!! Oh and lichen pronounce “like-in”. I felt so bad for you in the pouring down rain in Germany episode but happy that you touched it out!! My fav video❤I’m an USA army brat and dad was stationed in Germany. Germans love their gardens and to see the Beautiful Monuments/gravestones with the soo many diff kinds of little gardens was Amazing!! There are a lot of Catherine’s ( my name & correct spelling) I noticed. My kids have taken ancestry dna test and they are 6-8% Scottish. I’m named after my Aunt Alice Catherine ( my grandmas sister) and she was named after her grandmother or even great grandmother Catherine Kelley!! Anyways, Love & have enjoyed your videos thus far!! Oh 1 more thing- if you take a flashlight (torch) with you even in daylight-can angle on the wording so can read it better!! Happy walking!!❤
Love this - no long s very early on there. Here in NZ we have no gravestones older than 1829, but where I am, none before 1858 as Chch was only established in 1850 and the Maoris too basic to have elaborate headstones. But some 1850s and 1860s graves still have long "s" on them. None old enough to have skulls though. Whats the oldest grave you ever seen with a readable date and script on it (Not like Viking runes or anything), say something like "Heere lyethe ye boddie of Edmund Obadiah whoe dieyed ye day xxi or Aprile yeare of oure lorde mcccclxii" etc.
There were 'resurrectionists' aka bodysnatchers who stole fresh corpses to sell to medical schools for dissection prior to the passage of the Anatomy Act. The Anatomy Act allowed donation of one's body to science. Before this law was passed only executed criminals were available for dissection, and there weren't enough corpses from criminals to suit the needs of the medical schools.
“Muscles-burg” 👏🏻🤣 ‘Musselburgh’ is no different in pronunciation from ‘Edinburgh’. Remove “Edin” from “Edinburgh” and replace with “Mussel” = “Mussel-buh-ruh”, just like “Edin-buh-ruh” 🤷🏻♂️ Hey, I’ll give you a ‘like’ anyway.

Nice walk. The houses with the living people have a nice view. They can watch over the dead! Martha

My kinda place
It brings home the reality of infant mortality rates in mid 19th Century Edinburgh.
Most had no chance it was horrific
Amazing walk. I imagined each person standing as they were before their graves. That would be something. ❤❤
Enjoyed Dan you probably will never run out of what you do

Great video as usual! Did I see Arthur’s seat in the background?
Yes, that’s Arthur’s Seat. I live just beside it, on the other side.

Sorry you missed it mate. I did an instant live straight after the upload

Lost internet! glad its still here I can see it all know, I hope!
time stamp 2:26 john Scott. also Canadian out of St. john newfoundland
Maybe the open cage top mausoleums were like that so the guard in the tower could see and HEAR if anything was going on inside.

Grenada is an island nation in the Caribbean that is apart of the Commonwealth and recognizes Charles as their King.
Glasgow Cemetaries would be good.
Are the caskets under the floor or behind the wall.
Hi Dan got few of those dates wrong on this one, you based in notts area? By the accent. Supporter of the county? COYP ◾️◽️ good man!
Which Scottish cemetery that you've visited has the fanciest, most opulent tombs/mausoleums/gravestones?
No mausoleums but Dean Cemetery was very fancy
I wonder what those prim and proper Victorian ghosts make of somebody using there final resting place as a doss house 🤨
They could call the police? No telephones back then! Did they send a messenger running or on horseback to the police department?
Maybe via pigeon or smoke signals
Guns were available then and cudgels..
@@griswald7156 And whistles....
Have you ever Been to Fifeshire?
Who built the metal cages?
They had a specific purpose, which was to provide a formidable physical barrier, against body snatchers or resurrection men.
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Why do they put bars on top? 🤔
To stop people getting in….
So people don't steal the bodies or valuables

I'm surprised by how little Christian Iconography (Crosses etc) there is in this Cemetery, and why's it called a Burial Ground rather than a Cemetery?
Maybe a Scottish thing? Most are called burial ground there
@@deadgoodwalks From what I've read Christianity in Scotland has been through more schisms than I've had hot dinners.
there not mausoleums they are vaults
The watchtower is closed. The moseleums are open. Welcome to England.
Edinburg is in Scotland
