Why I bought a Truck Camper | Arctic Fox 992

  • Back story:
My first "camping rig" was a 6x10 cargo trailer that I built out in to a mini camping rig back in 1993. A year later, I started motorcycling riding, so then it doubled as my motorcycle hauler.
In 2003, I upgraded to a Desert Fox 21SW Toy hauler.
I used it for 7 camping seasons, until 2009. Earlier that year I decided I wanted to have an RV to camp in, but also go places with my Jeep, using the RV as a base camp. I sold the Desert Fox and truck and upgraded to a new 2009 Silverado 3500HD with the 6.6L Duramax, which I still own as of 2024. A few months later I bought a new 2010 Arctic Fox 811, which I owned until August 2020.
I sold the 6x10 cargo trailer in early 2010 and upgraded to a 6x12, similar to the trailer in this video (but narrower).
I sold that trailer in 2014 and started using an 8.5x20, which I later decided (in 2018) was too big for the remote campsites I like to go to.
In early 2019, I bought another 6x10, had it a few months then bought the black trailer in this video from a friend of a friend.
In August 2020 I upgraded to the gently used pre-owned 2018 Arctic Fox 992 shown in this video.

Great setup...I think this is the perfect setup...much easier to travel with too.

I agree with your reasoning. In addition to my 42' fifth wheel, I have a 2020 Arctic Fox 992, which is a lot more convenient for weekend trips and short getaways. I am looking to buy a similar cargo trailer to yours and for similar reasons. Thanks for sharing and posting your video.

7' wide is the best option for a cargo trailer behind a truck camper. 6' wide is annoying because you can's see it, which makes backing into a campsite very difficult.

The smaller definitely has it's advantages. We are full time and have a Class A Motorhome. There are times where a smaller setup would be better in oarticular situations.

How did it drive with the 20x8.5 trailer? Thinking of doing something similar for a race car. My camper is probably around the same weight 4-4.5k wet.

When I owned the 8.5x20 trailer, I had an Arctic Fox 811, which is a foot shorter than my current camper, a 992.
It towed fine with light loads such as camping gear and motorcycles.
I once towed my very well built Jeep TJ Rubicon (in 2012) in the trailer while hauling the truck camper. It was NOT a pleasant experience. I never did that again. It was way too much weight to tow while also hauling the truck camper, with the truck in this video, which is the same truck I still own in 2024.

@@deltabravo1257 Thanks for the response. I have a 99 Dodge DRW 3500. My camper is about 11'9 and 4-4.5k wet. I'm looking to tow my 20x8.5 trailer with a 1500 lb race car and two enduro bikes; about ~5500 total trailer weight. I'm debating if it's even worth trying since getting the superhitch setup is 2-3k.

      It’s like a combo towed camper/cargo box

Looks up Desert Fox 21SW. That's the toy hauler I owned before I downsized to a truck camper.
It's a towable RV with a big open cargo area in the back.
