    The only way you can abuse your knife is by leaving it on a shelf. Great video 😎

    This is great to see. A company taking some of their knives, even $100+ ones, and putting them to the test to show their use. That's a commendable quality you don't see often enough with any company nowadays.

    I've had my Mini-Grip for two years now and I finally broke down and bought a 551 last week. Like you I tend to favor my Spydies, but this as well as my 940 & other BM's are all pretty awesome!

    In my opinion, no folding knife should be a camping knife. Fixed blade is where it's at.

      Probably why he said " in these conditions I'd choose a fixed blade all the way" . Several times he said this isn't what this knife is ment for. Just to see what it will take.. goddamn can you not hear???

      Both folding and fixed blades have their uses and places. But for minor things like cutting cords, shaving, or opening a box it's great. Fixed field blades are more suiting for heavy outdoor use. Chopping wood, gutting fish, defense against an animal, etc.
      It's god just to pack both in your gear when you go outdoors. A knife for minor uses, a big fixed knife for heavy duty work.

    I really like your guys' honesty. Like in this video how you showed the lock fail, and on the ESEE candiru test some negatives of the sheath were pointed out. It feels a lot more genuine than other videos made solely to make money.

    The test you did at 2:30 is a great way to test your knife!! I think it's badass that your griptillian was able to handle weather you guys think that was abuse or not. Unfortunately I did this to see if my 154CM steel sheepsfoot blade could handle this thinking it wouldn't brake or bend at all and ended up braking a quarter inch of the blade right off!! For my camp/bushcraft adventures I carry a mora companion that I don't mind prying,batoning or hitting. And my grip for paracord slicing up veggies or simply siting around a fire making a spoon out of a stick
    Point being I would not advise chopping splitting batoning with any folder!!

    I took that very knife (except it had a d2 blade) with a fixed blade adamas on a 72 mile backpacking trip last month. I found myself using my griptillion for fire and food prep more than my fixed, not that I don't love the adamas, I just really love my griptillion.

    Anybody that's hasn't tried out a Benchmade Griptilian, really owes it to themselves to try one. Excellent size for EDC & price range make it obtainable to most people. If your limited to just one knife, this should be at the top of your list.

    Nice to see Crocket show up on a Blade HQ review! The Bechmade Griptilian is definitely a hard charging little folder. As a medic, I opted for the modified sheepfoot blade on my Griptilian. It's been a great blade from day one! I've had it about 3 years now.
    Great Review!

    ive carried this knife for the last 4 years i got it at a steal of a price. they labeled it attached to the paracord cutter for 20 dollars and i bought the para cord cutter and this came with it. it has become my favorite knife. it has not rusted at all and i use it for everything thing and and anything.

    I have a 154cm verion of the Benchmade Griptillian (the version before the grip/handle change) for about just over 2 year period. I've taken it to the outdoors activity to doing normal daily tasks... and I have nothing bad to say about the knife in general. Infact, I am thinking about purchasing the new Griptillian with upgraded handle soon (even though I rarely purchase the same/similar model of a knife unless I break or lose it).
    I actually ordered mine from the actual Benchmade website due to the option of being able to get a customization on the blade (letters etc.). I don't see why more manufacturers don't do this. It was actually cheaper this way than to bring the blade to a local knife shop for the customization (at least the two shops I've been to anyway). Another great way to purchase these is by going through legit 3rd party knife suppliers (like BladeHQ... and there are few others that I've purchased from).
    I give this knife 5 out if 5 ☆'s.

    Over the last ten years the Griptilian is been the best working man's knife I've ever had. Best feature is the quick one handed open and close when holding a rope in the other hand quickly deployment and close Griptilian beats Spyderco. My biggest complaint is the new black coated blade the shiny old one was nicer to look at and after much real world use the coating looks like crap. I will confirm they do come extremely sharp just got three stiches trying to cut a ziptie off my grandsons fishing pole and slipped cut me clean to the tendon on my Index finger lol. Great video 👍

  • @ding174
    @ding174 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    A fair and intelligent way to baton or chop wood especially in an emergency and you don't want to destroy the lock is by disengaging the locking mechanism while pounding on the blade.
    Test the blade not the locking mechanism because in an emergency if you break the lock you would be pounding on a unlocked blade anyway. And most folding blades will perform under battoning or chopping conditions if it's done intelligently and sensibly.

    • @bullridermusic2054
      @bullridermusic2054 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is actually a really interesting idea, are you saying don't lock the knife up keep it half way open and then baton? You might not want to risk an injury if you were deep in the bush but an interesting idea. You wouldn't harm the locking mechanism doing it your way though so that's pretty smart.

    • @ding174
      @ding174 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bullridermusic2054 there are a few vids of this technique elsewhere on YT. when I’m out on the trails I carry a fixed blade for chopping. My spyderco folder which I also have with me is for smaller camp chores and general cutting use. Glock and ka bar make very decent fixed blades.

    Never had a griptillian, got one. Never had a 154CM blade, got it. Wow, is this a nice knife for the price. The blade steel is great for a nice sharp utility edge. Takes an edge easy as butter. You don't have to be so picky when hand sharpening, as opposed to s30v, ELMAX, s35....I really like this knife because I've been thrashing it for three weeks now and I've been nothing but impressed. I'm a die hard Spydie lover too:)

    I noticed this video off to the side of my own video on a Griptilain that I found on the street. It was run over numerous times and the handle scales destroyed, yet the lock and mechanism still work as intended! Its amazing and I have heard that Mel Pardue had designed the knife on pen and paper in a few minutes and the design just works amazingly. I am actually more impressed with the compression lock on my Spydeco Paramilitary 2 that I got from Blade HQ though, but this is a fine knife!

      Universal Kombat mechanical sharpeners are always bad, you should be using stones freehand or a fixed angle sharpeners. a lansky or kme will do you good for a good edge. chosera stones are good for if you're going to be doing it freehand

    I'm with Crocket as I love the manix2 (1 g10 and 2 LW) but I bought a Griptilian last week (full size) and went back same day to buy another In a different blade style I liked it so much. Looking to get another today, it is a great light weight folder. I do not like heavy folders a if I'm going to carry a heavy duty use knife...I strap a fixed blade on. Which my g10 manix2 and like folders are more collection pieces to me because of their weight, to each their own.

    • @uscgalpha91
      @uscgalpha91 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I apologise. I was not being a smart ass.
      Field test would be like, cutting fishing line, gutting a salmon or pan fish, or rabbit, or gutting a duck or pheasant ....using it to repair a pack, first aid, you know that kinda that sort of thing.
      Having spent years camping in a hardwood forest and hacking every kinda tree along the Mississippi in the Coast Guard, no knife is a log splitter. Harbor freight has pleanty of cheap light tools far better suited. I honestly don't know where all this wood splitting comes from using a pocket knife.
      I always grabbed dead branches off of trees and broke them up by stepping on them or levering them between 2 close trees.
      I am coming to the conclusion that too many folks only go "camping" on you tube.
      Please excuse my ramblings but I am at year 9 with my Griptilian and it is a fab pocket knife.

      It's testing the limitations on a knife. We all know this knife will cut, so nobody needs to see a review to see if it can cut paper or fishing lines.
      Lock fails, tip breaking,...i love it to see on their knives instead of mine, and it's even more important for people outside the US that have to pay 1.5 to 2 times more for one.

    • @uscgalpha91
      @uscgalpha91 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Really, everybody knows how to break the tip on a knife. If you don't know what the limitations are before hand than you should not own a knife. Do you smash your boat into a pier to see if it will sink, Do you roll your car down a hill to see if the doors stay shut. Do you put your plastic canteen next to the fire to see when it will melt ?
      Their is some level of implied intelligence.

    To me, this is abusing this knife. I’d never do the stuff you did with a pocket knife. I’d only do this with a fixed blade, but that’s just how I was raised. I’m very impressed by this knife and this has sold me on this knife.

    My EDC knife. Sobering to see Axis-Lock give like that. Great video though.

    I'm curious if the blade would've snapped or the handle fracture if you did pull up and down on it while it was hammered into the log. Does the full size have liners? I have a mini.

    What did you use to sharpen it?

    I think the mini grip is a little bit higher quality because it has full stainless liners

    You should do some testing with Cold Steel knifes to see if they fail.. They are strong knifes.

      Cali Vapor knives. Knife is a singular noun or a verb. I.e. "I'll knife you". Knifes isn't a word

    To be brutally honest I've found your blade presentations to be a bit rubbish. But this...this is something else in the most awesome of ways. Crocket is great in front of the camera, photography and production values are ace. I hope Benchmade gave you some money because this is amongst the best commercials for a folder I've seen.
    Please do keep this up, as a consumer and customer this is what I want. Great work!

    I have a Doug Ritter MK I It is made by Benchmade and is in S30V I believe it is the same thing as a Griptilian only has an orange handle. I can get it hair shaving sharp, then cut some small sticks to make a/1 figure four trap and it is dull again. It will not hold an edge. I consider it as a complete waste of 100+ dollars.

    I'm wondering if a Cold Steel Recon 1 would have lockup failure under similar circumstances. I just purchased a Mini Recon 1 and it seems like a very tough little knife.
