      @@ksimpson2804 I think I like it better than the Benchmades. The thumb hole on the Spyderco isn’t the prettiest thing but it is once you start using it, I also love the compression lock. Another thing I like better is the thin tip. My particular Benchmade that I have has kind of a blunt tip and it’s not the best for piercing tasks. The PM2 with its thin taper and full-flat grind give it a tip that’s great for piercing.

    Dear friends of KnifeCenter, Congratulations on your challenge!
    So, in my opinion, both are excellent, undoubtedly are the dream of consumption of all. The Griptilian axis lock is special for ambidextrous, but even so, the paramilitary 2 is unbeatable... my favorite!
    Unfortunately, here in Brazil, they arrive with prohibitive prices.
    Thank you for allowing me to participate, a big hug to everyone!

    I have owned both and prefer the PM2. Better quality control, nice broad full flat grind, great ergonomics, no springs in the locking mechanism that can fail, nice grippy g10, recessed full length steel liners on all models and a press fit lanyard tube that indexes the liners perfectly for a consistently smooth pivot and centered blade.
    the S110V PM2 I have at 28° inclusive Is a really wicked slicer and is my main EDC.

      @Rich Scales Except when your Omega springs break and benchmade refuse to repair it because you live in the UK, then they void your warranty because you had to open it up and modify it yourself with non official springs, forced to counterfeit.

    These are two of the best knives at their price-point on the market. I own both of them (and many others) but consider the utility from several angles. For overall utility, the Paramiltary 2 can't be beat. it is a very tough knife. I consider it a workhorse for the blade strenth and edge retention. However, it is a little too bulky for my comfort as a pocket too. The Benchmade Griptillian, on the other hand, is a much better EDC, in my opinion. It feels more comfortable in the hand, opens quickly with a flick, and can handle reasonably descent levels of every day chores. Both locks work very well. I like the Spyderco spine lock and feel that it is a bit superior to the Griptillian for really tough tasks that put a lot of stress on the lock mechanism. The Griptillian affords very quick deployment and it hasn't failed me yet. However, I'm not sure I would rely on it for high stress pressures in work situations. I love both knives, but my choicein which knife I would choose on a given day is more based on what I will be doing with it at the time.

    After collecting for about 6 years I finally added a PM2 to my collection. I own 7 or 8 each of Spyderco and Benchmade, and appreciate the advantages of both locking styles. To tell the truth, I hesitated buying a PM2 because it seemed like it might might be a little big to EDC. Moreover, it didn’t seem as compelling as something like Spyderco’s Vallotton (also a bit chunky for EDC) or as collectible as a Damascus Delica with jigged bone scales, for example. I have to say, however, that I couldn’t put it down. It felt so perfectly sized and mechanically solid, I carried it every day for a couple weeks, and I usually carry a different EDC every day. The Griptilian is certainly fast deploying and arguably more comfortable to hold with it’s more rounded cross-section, but the PM2 feels more like a piece of engineering. That said, I own a Hogue EX01 and it gives the big guys serious competition!

I'm on my second one and I have the Benchmade Griptilian as well but for me what sets them apart are ergonomics on the para 2, it is just ridiculous, it Contours to your hand or maybe it's just my hands, so amazing I give it the slight Edge. Also the sharp ass flat edge and clip options.... Cool video

    @WC-JKD-BJJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I own both of these knives and they are two of my favorites for EDC. I like the Paramilitary 2 better for outdoor use because I find the blade shape to be more versatile in a variety of different grips and the compression lock to be less prone to breakage than the Griptilian's axis lock (because of the the omega springs). However, I think the Griptilian is better for carry around the office because of its deep-pocket clip (on the G-10/20CV model) and more subdued appearance (i.e., it looks a bit less "tactical" than the Paramilitary). If I could only have just one, I'd probably go with the Paramilitary because it is a better slicer, but it's a very close call. Both are excellent knives.

    I have both knifes in an upgraded version, they are both such great knives. I would have to pick the griptilian (my personal choice would be the upgraded model) because of the deep carry pocket clip and a very very slight edge of the axis lock operating system. This is one very hard choice, that there is no loser here, only two true winners that all knife owners should have each knife.

    Benchmade Grip with thumbstuds! Reliable, awesome grinds, relatively light. Only drawback is the handle thickness, but it’s manageable. I was never a fan of the pm2 handle, too long and the choil seems silly with such a big handle.

    Both are great EDC options. I would get a standard PM2 over the standard Grip. The Grip with upgraded steel and handle material wins out for me in the end. The axis lock is much smoother and easier to use for me. I also think the Griptillians feel better in my hand. Both are great knives and I could make arguments for either one being superior, in the end it is just personal preference.

  • @SteveKluver
    @SteveKluver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks David. Great job!
    In this match-up, I have to pick the G10 Griptilian, in 20CV steel. Why? The Axis-lock, gives me a better purchase on the knife, while accessing the lock. It is also the only ambidextrous lock choice, between these two knives. I personally, also have to demerit the Paramilitary 2, for having 12 pocket-clip holes drilled into it. 9 of which, will never be used, and do nothing but look ugly, and collect dirt and dust.
    I need to ask you too, if I could please? Just who was it, that decided on this match-up? And why was the Manix 2 not picked, to go up against the Griptilian? I will argue, that it would be a much better comparison. Which would then swing my earlier Benchmade Griptilian choice, over to the Spyderco Manix 2.

  • @heatherumphrey255

    All three are very nice knives. I own a couple full size Griptilians, two in the standard 154CM and one in the Ritter M390 shape that I installed Applied Weapons Technology aluminum scales on. I have yet to have a problem with the Axis lock and Benchmade replaced the serrated satin blade on one of them for free! Even though I knew it was a $40.00 charge and put 'call for card info' on the form, they replaced it for free. However, I have a love/hate relationship with the Griptilian. Why would they offer full length steel liners under the scales on the mini Griptilian but not the full size? Would it really cost that much by lengthening the liners a little more? Now that does give the option of customizing the full size Grip with infinite scale options. Aluminum AWT scales, Wilkins scales, G10 offerings, Micarta offerings, titanium scales offerings, etc. As far as the Spyderco and Hogue go, I've never owned either so I can't comment on them. There is a lot of love for the Spyderco's here in the comments below. I do know that they look like very well crafted tools. My only concern has been the hole in the blade and the flat grind. I always thought that cutting a hole in a blade would compromise it. And the full flat grind I've always thought would weaken that tip. In addition do they have full length liners? Again, I'm just commenting on what I see as I've never owned a Spyderco. My whole philosophy on a folder for everyday carry is 'hard use' though. And I guess I always thought of the Griptilian in more of that category - drop point saber grind blade geometry, steel that's workable in the field/woods, strong locking mechanism, full length liners (which the Grip falls short on) and optional glass breaker/skull crusher. Really the few blades I've found with those criteria are the Gerber 06 Manual/Auto in S30V, Benchmade Adamas in D2, Cold Steel Lawman?, maybe even the Buck 110 drop point with stainless steel bolsters in S35VN, etc. Maybe I should just get a Spyderco and try it. And Hogue now makes the Ritter RSK MK1 in M390 after collaborating with Doug Ritter!

    I've been wanting a mini grip for a while now, I like all the options it has so you really get a chance to customize it to your liking. That being said, that houge micro flipper looks to be a pretty sweet little flipper and I really like aluminum handle scales. Also, the paramilitaries and griptilIans are pretty common and lots of people have them, so I think I'd buy the houge for the materials, fit and finish and just to have something really cool that you don't see very often. I have a Paramilitary 2 and love the S30V steel. It takes a bit of work but takes a razor sharp edge. It opens easily and smoothly and is a great looking knife, I do wish the handle edges were rounded just a bit and for me the pocket clip bothers the tips of my ring and index fingers. Small things I know. My biggest issue is with the compression lock . I was trying to split a 2.5" piece of kindling by whacking the spine with another piece of kindling and the lock failed. I know it is made for slicing and dicing but it's a tool, right?
    I have several Benchmades including a couple versions of the Osbourne but never got around to the Griptilian, so given the choice of one or the other I'd go for Benchmade.

Though others have talked about quality problems, I have not experienced it, the quality is excellent. The 154cm blade material used in base models is a big upgrade from knives I have carried in the past that wouldn’t hold an edge for a day. The 20cv looks like a great upgrade.

    I will go for the Paramilitary 2 every day of the week. Compression locks are safer, are ambidextrous, can be unlocked with gloves on and they don't accumulate gunk as the Benchmade axis lock does (they are way much easier to disassemble for cleanup purposes). Spyderco tolerances and quality control are superior to those in Benchmade models and prices are considerably lower. Blade in the Griptillian wobbles (horizontal blade play), grind is not particularly well achieved (inconsistent in both sides) and scales feel cheap. Hogue is out of this league as they produce beautiful kinves (heavy though) but still with quality control issues (blade centering, blade play, etc.). Paramilitary 2 or Para 3 are way much better option than Griptillian and Mini Griptillian.

    • @patricksmatrick6193
      @patricksmatrick6193 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny, my Spydercos have just as much dirt built up as my Benchmades, so that's not relavent. I don't have a single Benchmade with an issue, grind, centering, lock up, and, I have sent far more broken Spydercos back for repair then Becnhmades. So after your done with your fanboy rant, put both brand's blade steels head to head and you'll notice that Benchmade comes out leagues ahead of Spyderco in terms of sharpenabiilty and edge retention. It's all in the heattreat and sadly Spyderco isn't there, even Buck has them beat.

    IMO the Para2 just can't be beat. Hands down my favorite EDC blade.

    Well I just got my first PM2, and don't own a Griptillian, I do have other axis lock Benchmades for comparison sake. I prefer a smaller knife for EDC (Bugout/Para3), but for work I have taken a liking to the PM2 size and ease of use with gloves on.

    Hi Dave, I like the pm 2 more then the benchmade. I hope to carry it as my camping folding knife.

    Really tough to choose, but I'd go with the Para2 because of the full serration and the 4 position clip. The Benchmade upgraded model with Tanto point looks really nice though!

    I would get the Benchmade Griptilian since I have a pm2 but never have gotten a Benchmade and would love to try the famous axis lock.

    I like the axis lock, my edc is a 20cv Crooked River, but I've been wanting to try the P2 and that compression lock. I've tried the Hogues (very nice btw), but I'd go for the P2.

    I've got a PM2 and Grip (sheepsfoot) both in S30V. They are regular parts of my EDC rotation and both are among the best production modern folders I own.
    If I were to buy a new one, it would likely be a PM2 in S110V. The PM2 is pretty close to a perfect folding knife. It's a difficult choice, however, because I could easily go for a Benchmade in a similar steel.

    Which to buy? For me the spydie hole works better so the Para 2 would be my choice.

    PM 2 is a great knife. I own both and love both. Hard to choose but PM 2 might have the edge for me just for the basic materials used in the base model.

    My favorite one is the full size Griptilian with the sheep's foot blade. I had a mini Grip and gave it to a good friend who really wanted a Benchmade knife. I am starting to miss the axis lock, and I think I need to replace my mi;ni Grip with the big brother.

    I have wanted a Spyderco knife for a long time. I like the look and feel of them, especially the big circle hole on the blade. They have a good reputation. That is the knife I would buy.

    Although I recognize Spyderco as a dynamic knife maker with a line of superb cutlery, I would buy an higher end mini- griptilian. I have a griptilian in 154CM with a drop point blade & black scales. I love that knife & the mini has been calling my name since they came out. Thanks.

    Having owned both of these knives in one of their iterations, I would personally buy a Griptillian as mine died while cutting up waterlogged carpet last year. However... If I owned neither knife, I would recommend the PM2 as my go to purchase choice. Excellent QC and an incredible performer for nigh any task you can throw at it. The ergos on the PM2 also allow for a much more solid grip for heavy cutting. Either way, you get a great EDC knife.

    those are some sweet choices, but I myself would choose a para3. I like the extra handle space and FFG, tons of steels to choose from with all the sprints and exclusives past present and future... tough to choose just one!

    I do have a mini grip in blue, a paramilitary 1 in D2 with green G10, a paramilitary 2 in S30V and camo handles, and a Para 3 with an aftermarket Lynch deep carry clip. All very good and understandable EDC choices. I carry the Para 3 more than any of the others, and feel that it has the best combination of ergonomics, materials, and all around usefulness. I would certainly consider another one in one of the upgraded steels.
    FWIW, some of my other Spydercos get more pocket time than any of the others (delica, caly 3, urban) but of the ones above, the mini grip gets carried more that either of the larger Paramilitaries.

    I'm more of a Benchmade guy, but I do know that Spyderco makes a stellar product. It's hard to say one is better than the other when they are both well built tools. It really comes down to cosmetics because I don't want a hole in my blade and I do like the strength of the Axis lock. I've dealt with Benchmade customer service before and they are on it. I am currently dealing with them and waiting for an upgraded blade change on my full size 551 Griptilian. They actually said they would replace the 154CM straight edge drop point for an S30V straight edge drop point even though that isn't an option. I do like that 4" Hogue EX01 with aluminum scales. Nice review.

    I carried a Para 2 for over a year, but my Griptilian with G-10 handles and CPM-20CV blade has been my EDC now since 2016. The fit and finish is impeccable, with a perfectly centered blade and zero play. It holds a shaving-sharp edge and requires little maintenance. The Spyderco is great knife, but my Benchmade is just perfect for me!

    I own three Griptilians (154cm, custom d2, and G10 20CV) and 5 PM2 (S30V, S110v, XHP, Elmax, S35VN). For edc it really depends on your task. The tip strength is less on the PM2 but it is a superb slicer. The Griptilian is a great knife for more all around cutting tasks because of the heavy duty blade profile. My daily cutting tasks are usually slicing so I usually carry the PM2 and prefer it for edc. Both are great knives that will last anyone a lifetime if not abused.

    My choice would be Paramilitary 2 because of the ergos of the handle. I've held both the Griptilian and Paramilitary 2 and the P2 fits like a glove. Thanks for the opportunity to own one.

    Given the choice of the three, the EX03 seems to be the most interesting to me. Primarily because I've yet to handle a button lock from Hogue. Their Q&C seems to be top notch from what I have heard as well.

    I own paramilitary one, bought 4 years ago. Believe it's the same size as para 2. Use it a lot, very good in retaining edge, comfortable G10 handle, safe back lock, very sturdy.

    I've had both of these knives, and hands down I'd have to go with the PM2. I prefer the Axis lock over the compression lock, but The PM2 just fits in the hand and in the pocket better. I love the leaf shaped blade and I think it's great for fine cutting. My only gripe about the PM2 is that it can be somewhat hard to sharpen towards the base of the blade.
