Joy boy is an actual legend that was brought to the Caribbean islands by slaves. Joy boy always smiles in the face of despair and plays his drum creating an irresistible desire to dance.
I fucking love how Oda just pulls inspiration and adaptation from the most obscure and least talked places and inadvertedly highlights them. I don't think I've learned as much from any series as I have from One Piece by just looking up where Oda got his inspiration from. To think a Japanese man is doing wonders for me learning about African and South American cultures and mythology, as well as pirate history and what a truly crazy era the golden age of piracy was. It's legit a blast.

@@r.a.s6410 Well shit, I don't know what to tell you but he is. Read plenty about him, he even show up in an encyclopedia about various mythological beings, creatures, and gods. Shows up especially in west indian cultures apparently. He's a minor god of rythm, freedom, and joy. He's also been sometimes been ass ociated with the legend of the Sun God Nika who freed slaves from the trans-Atlantic slave trade, so there you have where Oda got that from.
I've also seen some sources call him Baron Saturday.
I don't know, how much do you interact with old Caribbean myths? Most old pagan myths tend to come up all that often. But it's not all that hard to find out more about it, just go and search it up on a search engine of your choice.

@@ralphacosta999 Son Goku is based on chinese tales. Even though he is an alien you can say he is Chinese. That makes him the first non Japanese i think.
Also their are lot of anime main characters who are not Japanese like Eren Yeager, Edward Elric, Alucard and more

I know it's an artifact from the audio rip, but the steamy hissing adds so much to your recreation. If you ever decide to return to this ost to make a more crisp version, I do hope that these sfx remain.
