What's wrong with The Lord of the Rings? The Humans ultimately won against evil. Is it because a Hobbit was the one to ultimately destroy the evil ring? @@KeegoonBarnacle It is strange to assume that the xenos will be similar to us culturally, technologically, socially. Maybe the first thing we will meet that will be comparable to us in terms of mind is a species with a collective mind? Everything is possible.
@@texnikozero4934 Violence is ubiquitous in nature, even a collectivist species that developed a civilization would have had to been vicious enough to dominate its environment and rise above other species. Ants, which are highly collective-minded animals, still have group conflicts with other ant colonies and other insects, so just being collectivist wouldn’t mean that a species should necessarily be weak pushovers.
That being said I think its more likely that the conditions for civilizations to arise are simply too specific for it to occur in most situations; intelligent life is likely already super rare in the universe, but alien civilizations are probably significantly rarer even than that. I personally hope that if we encounter other sapient beings that we will treat them with respect, even if they may not be as civilizationally or technologically advanced as us.

Why does this make me happy? Ptobably because I live in a world that constantly lectures me about how terrible humanity is, and that we must be constrained by better men who will judge and sort us based on evils inherent to my skin, race and gender. Seeing an acknowledgment that pride in what you are is a virtue in a world of nihilism is strangely uplifting.
I hold no allegiance to any nation or single person. I hold allegiance to my species; humanity, as a whole.

I think of it as being spoken by one of the colonels of the old 100 on Terra during the unification wars, the first regiments that would go on to become part of the Imperial Army.
