Some of these people have played video games a lot and some have played them a little and it universally makes them less able to learn by trial and error. This came off as kind of condescending. Like look how dumb my girlfriend is. Feels like the narration should be a conversation about what's going on on screen and her thoughts during.
10:00+ Failure is part of gameplay. We all have been there and older games were far less forgiving in the matter. You try until you make it and for Half-Life it means staying alive. If you do that just by using the crowbar, the pistol, ... does not matter. The game does not dictate you the solution, you are free to try until you make it . If you do it wrong the game tells you with a death screen. You may be more familar with game patterns to understand the meaning of destrutables, ammo, weapons - e.g. that a weapon pickup maybe important and the weapon more powerful or helpful for the next challenge. Instead of wondering about her hardships - I would praise her resilience and the games resilience to allow so many even sup par tactics to last her that long.
Gotta say, her playstyle is quite similar to mine, but my crutch weapon is the shotgun and my crutch strategy is to jump out from behind cover and run down my opponent using my weapon as a melee attack with a huge hitbox.
It bummed me out when she was saying, “I’m so dumb”, nah she’s not, HL is great but there is also some really awful design mixed in with the brilliance that has only been exacerbated with age. The game will environmentally train you on some aspects and then completely ignore others.
It's not that she's "dumb", but rather, if we put ourselves back in 1998 when HL first came out, with little to no experience in gaming in general, suddenly her behaviour is pretty damn accurate to what we were used to with shooters back then. No predetermined cover spots, all story being spoonfed to us, shooting mechanics that expected us to just run and gun..... It was a nice look back at history. Also, ring her.
"She didn't realize the crystals she used in the first experiment were the ones she was breaking in the final boss fight" ...I'm gonna be honest, I never made that connection either.
I dunno, a lot of the comments felt pretty harsh by the standards of this series. Maybe a little defensive about HL1, here. Comments about how she was constantly struggling or "she kept not understanding basic, obvious things" but then all the footage that plays over is of her doing just fine.
YPU SHOULD HAVE SHOWN HER THE TUTORIAL BEFORE LETTING HER PLAY,SO SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN LESS CLUELESS AND MORE CAPABLE TO NOT ONLY IMMERSE BUT ENJOY TGE GAME MORE(TLDR MY KEYBOARD BROKE)

The number of times I played half-life over the years.. I was this many years old finid out those "broken teleporters" on XEN were healing pods..
I hope that she'll play the expansions after that ! Especially Decay, will be interesting to see how you both handle the games. edit: 22:53 well, that's actually the case, she didn't need to exactly line up her shots, because auto-aim was on.

@@theninjamaster67 nah black mesa is only better in some ways. and no, I'm not blinded by nostalgia, I played half life for the first time a couple years back and just played black mesa recently. black mesa is far too overcomplicated and confusing to be a viable replacement for the original.
@@nybergsgarage For me I can't be fucked to play the original Xen and Black Mesa improves it by leaps and bounds (literally cause you get a cool jump on that level lol). @@theninjamaster67 I agree the people that choose to replay hl1 over blackmesa are straight masochists. Xen is the WORST part of the OG half life when i play it I just want to end my suffering. It may be longer than in the original but atleast i get to look at the beautiful scenery
It might be a nit pick, but it wasn't Gordon's first day at black mesa, as implied in HL2 and the fact that he had to have been there for at least one previous day for the training mission.
i still think that half life was the first retro game to be actually GOOD. stuff like doom was pretty nice, but by today its extremely dated in its gameplay and can just be not very fun in places. same with quake, wolf3d, any one of those groundbreaking shooter games. half life is the only one that i tried out and actually felt interested enough to play through the whole game. ..... and then immediately play the entire thing all over again.

crazy idea, but i think the "we'll marry when half life 3 releases" might, just maybe, be a joke the 2 of them make, if it's something they actually say in real life at all
I genuinely hope for Taryn’s sake that the joke at the beginning was just that - a joke. If she actually wants to get married, and you used to tell her you’d propose when Baldur’s Gate 3 came out because you didn’t think it would happen, then moved the goalposts to an even less likely-to-happen game when it did, in fact, come out, then you’re just stringing her along at this point and she should find someone who’s more serious about her. Which is why I say I hope it’s just a joke. 😕
Just found this channel, instant sub. About the not picking up on the sample at the start of the game being the same crystals you destroy at the end, I honestly never picked up on that either, and I've played through HL a few times over the years.
"Back in the day this was groundbreaking stuff" I mean sure... if you forget the games that predate it. System Shock being an example. Heck. There are Doom Engine games from back in the day that had a lot of exploration and story. It wasn't groundbreaking... at least not for the reasons you stated. It merely popularised a lot of the tropes that would become commonplace in first-person games going forward. I can't pretend that I didn't love the game when it first came out but it wasn't exactly "new". 3:03 and here you're just plain wrong. It's not Gordon's first day at all. He's been working for Black Mesa for a while. For one thing: Everyone knows who he is just on sight. It's his first time working on this particular experiment, though.
As a relatively modern gamer, playing half-life was quite the tedious experience. That being said, I wasn't exactly playing it the most optimal way, just running and shooting, completely forgetting the thinking aspect of the game. Half-life 2, however, was amazing. I don't have a VR headset, so I haven't played Half-Life Alyx yet, but eventually. So I'm just constantly thinking of what could happen next while resisting the urge to watch any playthroughs.
You have to do Half Life 2 next ♥ I can relate with her immersion. I once played thought Half-Life 2 in almost one session, while "roleplaying" a credible Gordon Freeman. It was one of the best gaming experience of my life.

It was a nice look back at history.
Also, ring her.
The commentary seemed a smidge too critical to me.
@@Frogface91 On her or the game?
@@riveraluciano The girlfriend.
@@Frogface91 I agree.
This is how I felt too! But you seem to be the only one mentioning it.
"She didn't realize the crystals she used in the first experiment were the ones she was breaking in the final boss fight"
...I'm gonna be honest, I never made that connection either.
😊 I'm surprised you went for original half life over black mesa remake. Can't wait for half-life 2 video.
I’ve been playing this game for at least 15 years, and I never realized the crystal you insert in Anomalous Materials is the same type you destroy in the end! That makes so much sense!
The textures thing just reminded me of old cartoons where something the characters were supposed to interact with was obviously different from the painted backgrounds
11:14 That line is perfect for the situation
21:00 That giggle though. Can't help it when you're suddenly powerful.
Is not Gordon's first day tho, was it?
This was an amazing game, it aged like good wine.
2:45 She has now figured out one of the big things about this game.
The number of times I played half-life over the years.. I was this many years old finid out those "broken teleporters" on XEN were healing pods..
man if you guys ever break up these videos are gonna be super depressing to watch
If you’re doing retro games, I’d love to see her play Deus Ex. It’s a very open-ended game in terms of player options.
9:00 You should have her check out TeamClown's "You Can Rescue Every Scientist" mod.
I hope that she'll play the expansions after that ! Especially Decay, will be interesting to see how you both handle the games.
edit: 22:53 well, that's actually the case, she didn't need to exactly line up her shots, because auto-aim was on.
I do not want to be that guy but i will be that guy cause why not. IT IS NOT GORDON'S FIRST DAY if you actually listen to the conversations you will realise Gordon was working at black mesa since his graduation
Very important with Abiotic Factor being playable. It gives very familiar vibes.
How did I miss this vid I love Half Life, Can’t wait for you to play Half Life Thre-………..oh :’(
I always think of Freeman's mind when I see someone play this game.
Wow she is lovely and I her voice too, it's so satisfying to hear her happy at her success. And I love how she interacts with the characters and world like she is really there.
For the next classic game have her play Fallout 3, please... I just finished it after 13 years and it still rocks.
just played ROR2 before watching this and I was soo confused yet appreciated of the music choice
The reason for almost all the gameplay hiccups is just that she didn’t go through the hazard course before starting the game.
I've been wanting to replay Half-Life for a long time now, thanks for putting this video out so I can relive the glory days without sinking 20 hours into it
wdym 20 hours, it can be done in half an hour if you're (very) good :)
Just play Black Mesa it's not worth going back to the original Half Life when you have a remake that's better in nearly every way.
Maybe it's just me but I dislike the original Xen enough to where it makes me not want to play Half Life 1 cause it's the entire last section of the game.
@@theninjamaster67 I agree the people that choose to replay hl1 over blackmesa are straight masochists. Xen is the WORST part of the OG half life when i play it I just want to end my suffering. It may be longer than in the original but atleast i get to look at the beautiful scenery
I just played through Half Life 1 with all expansion packs for the first time and now i see you doing it aswell. Great timing and i love you both 😭
CERTIFIED BANGER! LET'S GOOOOOOOO!
3:05 Yes, it was his first day. It just was retconed in Half-Life 2.
It might be a nit pick, but it wasn't Gordon's first day at black mesa, as implied in HL2 and the fact that he had to have been there for at least one previous day for the training mission.
25:05 YO WHAT, EXCUSE ME?! THOSE ARE HEALING PODS?! All these years, so many playthroughs and I never picked up on that.
Wot?
Well now you know!
And knowing is half the battle
"Gordon Freemans first day Black Mesa". Dude what? Where are you getting this information?
i still think that half life was the first retro game to be actually GOOD.
stuff like doom was pretty nice, but by today its extremely dated in its gameplay and can just be not very fun in places.
same with quake, wolf3d, any one of those groundbreaking shooter games.
half life is the only one that i tried out and actually felt interested enough to play through the whole game.
..... and then immediately play the entire thing all over again.
So you’re never gonna marry her? That’s cruel
Either that or imagine if he just jinxed himself and half life 3 got announced out of the blue
@@joshuaholland5279 we can thank him for it if that’s the case. Sounds like a win win in my eyes. He finally puts a ring on that finger AND we get a game we’ve been wanting for years
@@wizardwolf1020 😂
27:17 "it's the Thai guy!!" personally i always thought he seemed more Vietnamese but ok
It seems your girlfriend is a "neo gamer", used to be spoon fed instructions ('press f to open') by developers to avoid the slightest frustration but also a sense of challenge. It's like the difference between a sword fight and fencing.
3:05 it's not Freeman's first day at the facility.
For those who say science team knew Freeman prior to arriving, there's also Gordon's locker with his personal belongings.
Don't be a dick, bro. If you're gonna marry her, don't tease her. If you're not going to marry her, absolutely crazy, I love girlfriend. She's hilarious, and a badass gamer. 🤘
Love the girlfriend videos.
All this for tossing in a harmless joke. We all just love girlfriend.
crazy idea, but i think the "we'll marry when half life 3 releases" might, just maybe, be a joke the 2 of them make, if it's something they actually say in real life at all
16:23 "This isn't really making sense..."
She just described the entirety of Residue Processing in 1 sentence.
Why could you not marry her upon the release of BG3? Explain yourself man!
He was busy, playing BG3!!!
21:35 "I think I drew the shortest straw" just marry her dude trust me, that was the funniest joke
You better marry her bro. If you won't, I volunteer!
"Back in the day this was groundbreaking stuff"
I mean sure... if you forget the games that predate it.
Bro you are a fool for not marrying her, don’t wait too long!
You're talking to her as if she's a dumb person but she finished Half Life in a few days, I played it for years and finished it only once.
I am impressed your girl friend had the patience to finish this. I gave up midway in 1998 when I was a kid because i got bored
Original HL1 not even the Black Mesa remake and update. Thats dedication.
Take a shot every time he says "immersion"
You have to do Half Life 2 next ♥
I can relate with her immersion. I once played thought Half-Life 2 in almost one session, while "roleplaying" a credible Gordon Freeman. It was one of the best gaming experience of my life.
