This video saved me! I'm a girl and very beginner, but I bought this truck for $1000 with the determination of flipping it doing the repairs on my own. I think you solved my mystery. I'm beyond grateful.
Great video, thanks! I have a 1999, E-350 with the 7.3 If your working on the E-series van you have to remove the aircleaner assembly from the front and the resonator box from the inside in order to get to the ICP sensor. I bought a open end wrench and cut it in half in order to make it fit and it worked just fine.
DUDE! Thank you so much for doing this video! Because of this video, I was able to take care of the lop and the rough idle, not to mention, my mysterious oil leak (out of the ICP). So, I checked my EBP sensor and the tube like you suggested, and sure enough...clogged beyond blowing it out. Ordered one at my local ford dealership, installed it. Between that fix and the stupid asinine third break light, I had LED's in place of the 921 incandescent bulb and my tranny was all over the place, rapid shifting and such...put one back in...shifts like a freaking dream! So, that being said, between the fix you showed me and the other stuff I mentioned, this pick-up shits-N-gets again! 1995 F250 XLT 7.3 250,000mi I spent the last year and a half, saving and buying parts needed. All worth it!
Thanks again for the assist on the ICP sensor. Have another question, is the oil dipstick tube grommet for the 95 F250 an easy fix? Don't I just detach the tube from the block and just pull the tube out? I realize I will have to drain the oil regardless if it is easy or difficult. Totally dig your page here on TH-cam
You just unbolt it and pull the tube out carefully. You do not need to drain the oil if I'm if I'm reading this right. It's been a long ass day and I'm tired.
lI bet brother. Sweet! I will change it tomorrow. I thought it was the o-ring. I cleaned it up with some brake-clean. Cleaned it up good, cause it only spewed when running, so i could tell and reached up there and pulled what was left of the old grommet.. Thank you so much Ty, go get some sleep! I am drinking a Tecate beer in your honor. haha Isaac Sheppard

Search for 'Powerstrokehelp' on TH-cam. Bill Hewitt has dozens of videos about 7.3 repair and issues that you may run into. His most recent content mainly concerns 6.7, 6.4, and 6 liters. But still a bunch of 7.3 stuff. th-cam.com/channels/Qz2vFEc1m-WGKf6g-pz9DA.html
I have a problem with my 1995 F350 7.3L. For a few weeks before my recent service (10,000 K's) say 60% of the time, would start straight up in the morning and then cut out, try again and no go, wait a minute or 2 and would fire up and no more cut outs for the day. Soon as we did the service not a sign of it doing it again till 3 weeks later and about 800/1000 ks it did it again. last 2 mornings no problem. I plugged the diagnostic tool in when it was doing it regularly but shows no probs on the Diag". Appreciate your input!
GMG, Have one heck of a problem. PCM relay chattering: When it does it dies, Until it stops chattering -No start. Have Autoenginuity scan but no power to DLC ( prior owner cannibalized wires for audio sys.) have you seen this before (Relay is OK) Has only 132 K miles Great truck! Will be changing IDM and IPR, today. Hadn't thought of doing the EBP yet, so thanks, and new CPS was first thing I did. Awsome video. I have a 2000 f250 I ran my truck out of fuel accidentally And been having this similar issues I thought maybe my icp sensed air in the system and shut it down I do have to replace the o rings in my fuel bowl .. I thought maybe my bowl was draining down a very little.. good video
I have an OBS 96 and I have a vacuum leak. it's not four-wheel drive so the only thing the vacuum pump does is drives the switches and it defaults into defrost.
The vacuum pump is there to provide power brakes and run the HVAC controls. If the vacuum pump is bad you will have a very stiff brake pedal. If the brakes feel fine you most likely have a leak at the vacuum line running into the cab on the passenger side firewall or behind the switch itself.
Yep id service it first, and see if that fixes it... otherwise pour a bottle of Lubegard torque converter Instant Shudder Fix, and save up for a new torque converter
My 2000 7.3 when colder temps outside, not real cold, just like maybe 40's F, it will fire right up but instantly die. Like it just can't quite catch itself. I do it a couple two or three tries and kinda feather the throttle and then it will run fine. When temps are warmer, no issues whatsoever. Any thoughts? Thanks for posting this, great video.

Are you at all familiar with the 2001 Ford Taurus SE V6? I know, pretty specific, right? ha. I need to figure out if the fuel pump is bad or if it is something else. After driving for awhile, then parking the car, I would restart it and all it would do is turn over. Sometimes it sounded like it was struggling to start as if it had a dead battery. After awhile, it would start just fine, and run just fine. This was hit and miss for several days. Then finally it just wouldn't start at all, just turn over. It has plenty of fuel, new interstate battery, new starter, new alternator. Not that would have anything to do with the fuel issue. When I turn the key to start position, I don't here the fuel pump at all, but I know that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't working. Could it be a sensor? What us your opinion? Thanks again for all your assistance in the past. Would you be so kind as to refer me to someone if you are stumped? Isaac S.
The Idi motors have a check valve in the fuel filter base when they fail your fuel will leak back to your tank depending how long it has been sitting it will start then shut off
What scan tool do you suggest or use? I have a 99 7.3 as well and am looking to purchase a scanner that works well for it. Having this same issue so gonna take a crack at it Monday when my ICP sensor gets here. Thank you for the video great detail hope this fixes my issue. If not my plan is to try a new CPS.
I have a 2001 Ford Excursion 7.3 While driving down highway at 80 mph, my truck went into limp mode. I kept driving to home going 60 mph down small hills and slowing 5 mph by the time I reached the top of next hill never stalled till I got to the gate at home , but barely started back up and I drove it to the house another 1/2 mile. Could you Pretty please give your opinion where I can start trouble shooting. Im a descent wrench turner but lack your experience and knowledge.. I changed the turbo two tears ago, but it always made a chirping or squirreling noise when I punched it, not sure how to check it . Truck wont start. oils full , she;s getting fuel. I got a 2008 F-250 Super Duty power stroke Diesels 6.3 L. The truck started and I drove it about a miles or two or sometimes started for 3-4 seconds and it turned off. Can someone tell me what’s wrong with it please?
I have a 98 ford econoline van 7.3 turbo diesel. Has ran just fine and today the service engine light popped up and my truck started losing power then died. Has to set about 30 minutes then can start again, runs about 30 seconds and shuts off fast.. Like I just turned the key off. Any suggestions?
I have an 02 f350 7.3L and it died suddenly and wouldnt smoke but would crank over fine. We first changed the crank position sensor and nothing. After that didnt work i unplugged the icp sensor and it didnt help at all. A while later i learned about the ipr valve and when i changed it, it still wouldnt start so i again unplugged the icp sensor and after 3 or 4 tries it started and ran for about 15 or so minutes then died. I started it back up and plugged the icp sensor back in thinking that maybe after setting so long(several several months) that it just needed to prime and about 10 minutes after plugging the icp in it died. I tried to start it and its back to a no smoke problem. I replaced the icp sensor and it still wont smoke but cranks over fine. Before it died each time it jumped in rpm for a second or two then would die. What is wrong with this turd! I have worked on this scrap pile for almost a year trying to diagnose it, put a code reader on it and it said no codes but it was a cheap code reader so idk how accurate it is...have you had this problem. Please help.
Same thing happened to me , same truck as yours. Happened day after I got my oil changed. Messed with the truck for months. My father was out for a visit. He was a trucker for 50 years. He said that they put car oil in my diesel. The oil was too thin to push the injectors. I changed the oil. BAM!!!! Starts every time , runs great. He also said that sometimes if you have diesel fuel leaking in the oil , it will thin the oil and do the same problem. Hope this helps.
I replaced the injector control pressure sensor, exhaust pressure sensor and the cam position sensor and it still wont keep running. What do you suggest next? Appreciate your help!
i have been having the same issues with my 97. i unplugged my icp, it started up, barely, i gave it some throttle like you said then it died when i took my foot off the petal. a check engine light came on as well. any idea whats going on there?
Thank you for a wonderful video. I have the exact same problem in a 2000 7.3 Powerstroke. I tried disconnect sensor wires like you showed , but the motor still won't run for more than a few seconds. Anything else I could look at?
Thank you for the fast response. It's been about 10 years since the CPS was replaced. I was thinking about that also. Thanks for taking the time to help. Subbed.
@@cincydieselrepair6893 bethel Ohio? That’s not far from me you guys have a website? Also I’d like to pick your brain my truck is cranking starts to fire and then shuts off then just cranks it did this wen it was out of fuel the other day so I filled it up and it started just fine until today it’s white smoking a bit too could it be my HPOP or the ICP like in this video?
@@Tonka_6.7 I don't have a website. I have a full time job as a diesel tech and do some side work. Mostly for dealership now days. It could be your icp sensor, cam sensor or IDM. Is it a 7.3?
That’s either the cps or your fuel pump. I had the same thing happen but now my truck runs rough and I’m thinking it’s my fuel pump. Does your pump have a loud buzz when you’re cycling the key?
Hello I have a 1996 7.3 that won’t start I changed CPS and also unplugged IPC. Still no start. ICP is reading 0 psi when cranking And my ipr is hitting 65% I pulled ipr valve and found a small crack in o ring. Could this be my problem?
Harness short somewhere between injection driver module and the pcm. Or a fault within the injection driver itself Or very unlikely a failed injector causing the IDM to over current. Check the harness is first start
Be good to give more info. Such as where things are located that you are talking about. Such as the electric vacuum pump, where you get parts. DIYs will need the extra information.
Hi.. thank you for the video.. but i dont know is it the same problem with my car. Maybe you or someone else can help me. I come from Germany and bought a 1990 F E-350 V8 7.3L Navistar Ambulance. She has the problem that she starts once for 5 - 10 seconds. But after that it takes a long time for it to start or not if the batteries a down. Probably air in the intake lines. Once the engine is on after enough starts, everything works perfectly. You can drive and stop and start perfectly. The whole thing happens after a day of standing. I thank you or you if someone can help me..
Check lift pressure at the fuel filter housing test port. You should have around 5 psi engine cranking. Also you should not have air bubbles present when depressing the valve.
@@JamesSmith-xs7sr I'm currently on a trip in Spain and don't have the right tools with me to test it. I'll have to have it checked at a workshop. Next week.
Cincy Diesel Repair no it starts but then it’ll idle for a minuet and die it does it for 3 times and stops and once I drive it for a few minuets it’ll jerk itself like it’s about too die and I’ll turn it completely off and turn it back on it’ll run perfectly afterwards
Have you replaced your EBPS/tube and Cam position sensor? If so, the next part is likely your IPR. I just had to replace mine last week...it was shutting off on me periodically, surging idle, then one day just crank/no start. These are spendy, $160, but if you have tried the other things and don't want to take it in to run diagnostics, this may be your next purchase. Buy OEM! I bought an off brand because it would get to me 3 days faster and was almost $100 cheaper, but it did not idle properly and I ended up buying OEM anyway once I knew that was causing the no start and have the aftermarket as an emergency fix now.
NEED HELP MY TRUCK DIED SUDDENLY AND WONT START EVEN WITH STARTING FLUID.THE CHECK ENGINE SOON LIGHT STAYS ON ALL THE TIME NOW EVEN WHEN IN ACC.ANYBODY HAVE A IDEA CAUSE THIS IS CRAZY????? THANK YOU FOR THANK YOU FOR ANY COMMENTS THE HELP WOULD BE GREAT THANKS
HELP I’m stuck my 6.0 is having a issue where when I put it in drive and hit the gas for about 3-5 seconds it just dies but when it’s in park I can rev it and doesn’t die no matter how long I leave it on
This could be many things unfortunately. First check for any transmission codes the put the rear end on jack stands and put it in gear to see if you possibly have a bind in the transmission.
I unplugged my ICP and the truck would not restart when cranking plugged it back in and it fired up and ran but I did find oil seeping out of the ICP sensor
Replace the icp sensor and check that oil has not pushed up the wires. If the coating on the wire feel slimy and can be slid up the wires replace the pig tail
Ty Carr what my truck does is on a downshift like if i hit the gas hard or im going up a hill it shutters for maybe half a second but if its slowing down it doesn't do it
Yes most likely you have a torque converter starting to fail. I am not going to say that I'm 100% right because those transmissions can do goofy stuff but that is my opinion from experience.
All those codes will throw on low oil. The higher the rev, the lower the oil will be in the pan and the sump won't pick it up and the motor will run rough at first, then it will fail safe and shut off. It will restart each time taking longer to crank. I know this is three years old, but folks. The first thing to check on a ford diesel is always your fluids.
I changed injector control pressure sensor and no help. The problem I have is the truck cranks everytime and shuts down after 5 seconds and it runs fine for those 5 seconds. thenit takes 2 or 3 cycles and turning truck over and over again and it finally cranks and lops for an few seconds and runs all day long. this happens weather hot or cold outside , no difference . also as long as engine has been running I can crank back with ease anytime. it just seems to happen if I let set for 10 plus hours . can you help?
I have a 2000 Powerstroke and having similar problems. Yesterday I started it up to warm it up and within 10 seconds it died. I proceeded to start it up again only to have it die again within seconds. So this time I got in the truck started it up and feathered the gas a little bit and revved it up a few times to clear out what possibly could have been causing it. then I let it idle of which it did for about another 10 or 15 seconds before dying again. Then upon the fourth time of starting it I just got clicking. And because I just put two new batteries in it about 3 months ago, it never dawned on me that it could be a low battery causing it to click like the starter went bad or the solenoid was out. Anyways I ended up getting it towed home. my neighbor that's also got a 7.3 said, "did you put it on the battery charger," to which I did not think that my batteries were low. Anyways I put it on the charger and sure enough it fired right up but then cut out within 10 or 15 seconds. So I started it up again and the same thing happened. The third time I started it and revved it up a couple times and then let it idle and it seemed to run fine and stayed at an idle for several minutes However upon the first two times, right before it died, I took notice that my water in fuel light flashed for just a second. I didn't think much of it because the light flashed just as it was dying. Nevertheless the symptoms are similar to yours, so I'm debating if I have a water in the fuel problem or if it is that sensor. If it is the sensor, would it sometimes run at an idol or possibly take two or three times in order for it to run on its own?Without diagnostic equipment, how can I better accurately address whatever problems I'm having to be certain that it is the ICP sensor? And could it be a water in the fuel problem that's emulating the same symptoms of a ICP sensor? I'm pretty good with gas engines but this is my first diesel engine so I'm trying to learn as I go. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated
It doesn't sound like a ICP sensor problem. Definitely drain the fuel bowl and replace the filter. I would also check your alternator out put. These are electronically controlled engines and I have seen a bad alternator and weak batteries cause an engine to shut off like that
@@cincydieselrepair6893 about 2000 miles ago I replaced the fuel filter, so do you still think that's necessary? I'll certainly change it again. But I'll start with checking the alternator output since I've already done the fuel filter. But what you're saying is that you've seen all matters on their way out that will cause the truck to shut off like that? Because I was thinking maybe I had a bad cell in one of my batteries but I didn't think the alternator going out would cause it to kill.

Hi I'm wondering what troubleshooting program you are using or do you know another error code reader that works to 7.3?
You can drive a socket on the old sensor to get it out instead of a wrench. You will be throwing it away anyway.

It sounds like it could be the FICM or IPR valve but you really need to pull the code and see what it says
Great video God bless you and your family Exeellent I, have my trok 20001 7.3 sheyking my inglés is not good God bless Americans people from NJ
Mine cranks fine cold, goes 5 or 6 miles and dies, then it doesn't want to crank. It's been 95 and not snowing.
I replaced the injector control pressure sensor, exhaust pressure sensor and the cam position sensor and it still wont keep running. What do you suggest next? Appreciate your help!
Does it shut off quick or does it slowly choke down?
Runs great for 5 minutes then slowly shuts down
I would check fuel pressure it sounds like you have a restriction
I changed the fuel filter a few weeks ago so I will look into other areas. I will keep you in touch...thanks!
What year is the truck?
Thank you for the great video very helpful
i have been having the same issues with my 97. i unplugged my icp, it started up, barely, i gave it some throttle like you said then it died when i took my foot off the petal. a check engine light came on as well. any idea whats going on there?
You need to pull the codes that set the check engine light . You could have multiple small problems causing a issue.
Thank you for a wonderful video. I have the exact same problem in a 2000 7.3 Powerstroke. I tried disconnect sensor wires like you showed , but the motor still won't run for more than a few seconds. Anything else I could look at?
Replace your crank position sensor if it has not been done recently. Check your fuel pressure under load for restriction.
Thank you for the fast response. It's been about 10 years since the CPS was replaced. I was thinking about that also. Thanks for taking the time to help. Subbed.
My name is Mark I have the same year truck 2007 7.3 180 6000 miles still running strong pray that lasts me
what if you have a 95 direct port injection Powerstroke do I have the same sensor
if a 99' f250 7.3 is totaled without looking at the engine and minor damage what could be wrong?
Fuel relay switch normally happens on impact to cut the fuel off in case of emergency find it push it back in drive some more
This the cincy diesal over on US50 near cleves ??
No I believe they are cincy diesel power
@@cincydieselrepair6893 ahh okay well I’m having this issue like in the video I was about to bring the truck to you guys lol
I'm out in Bethel. This was a very old video when we first thought about calling it cincy diesel power
Is it a 7.3?
so whats it mean when u unplug icp and truck wont start it started but would shut off within 5 min but icp unplugged nothing at all
What other scan tools do you have.
GREG Feeney I have zero oil pressure when Engine gets hot
Tim Williams Have you hooked a mechanical gauge to it?
Nice upload thanks!
I got a 97 sometimes when idle or driving it stall and die and I’ll start it right up and keep driving will this fix my problem
ICP is reading 0 psi when cranking
And my ipr is hitting 65%
I pulled ipr valve and found a small crack in o ring. Could this be my problem?
You could replace the IPR but it sounds to me like you may have a bad high pressure pump.
Cincy Diesel Repair can hpop just go bad like that? I know my pump was putting out like 2650 constantly for the pass month.
Yes it can. Did it shut down while driving or just not start in the morning?
Great video thank you
I’m hoping to find someone who can tell me how to remove a broken standpipe from a 6.0 power stroke F250.
That's a great video.
I have a 99 7.3 with a no start and a p1219 code.
What do you think that is?
Harness short somewhere between injection driver module and the pcm.
Or a fault within the injection driver itself
Or very unlikely a failed injector causing the IDM to over current.
Check the harness is first start
CAM position sensor. Not crank.
Be good to give more info.
Such as where things are located that you are talking about.
Such as the electric vacuum pump, where you get parts.
DIYs will need the extra information.
Great video
Hi.. thank you for the video.. but i dont know is it the same problem with my car.
@@JamesSmith-xs7sr thank you very much. I will check this 🙏

Great video where did you get the ipr and tube?
If they didn’t unplug the ICP connector then what the hell did they do for 2 weeks.
well, I did see a new alternator, lol
Thanks a lot sir you really saved my night!
I need help my my 2007 f250 93 miles i just did a tune up but my truck shut off for no reason it isnt no engine light ,PLEASE HELP!
What do you mean by tune up? What all did you do?
Cincy Diesel Repair
Cincy Diesel Repair change 8 spark plugs air filter gas filter after that the truck go off when is in park press gas go off
Man I'm not sure about that problem on a gas truck. We mainly work on diesels
Got a question for you bud if you still check this
Yeah, what's your question?
Once I switch my icp censor and it still does the same thing what else could be the problem ?
Are you still getting a crank no start?

Dude you changed the icp sensor not the ipr
I have 02 7.3 runs for 10 min n dies - I already changed the icp sensor and cam sensor still have the problem- does any one knows what a could be ?
Check your fuel pressure to make sure you don't have a restriction in the fuel tank filters
@@cincydieselrepair6893 ok - thanks
What kind of scan tool is that
That's Auto Enginuity software. I highly recommend it
@Cincy Diesel Repair what's the dongel called?
Thanks!
I have a 7.3 that will start up and shut off I can't get anyone to come up to look at it
Cincy diesel told me to replace the ICP sensor. This stopped my stalling and gave me my power back in my 95 F250 7.3
@@cincydieselrepair6893 Good morning, that's my plan. I do enjoy your video's. I Ordered a icp and it will be here today. How's the weather in ohio
Only a slight flim of oil. I just disconnected it and looked inside the sensor and you can see it.

what is the transmission shutter you talked about? i think my truck is doing that
When the truck tries to shift into overdrive under load the torque converter will slip and shutter for a second.
Ty Carr i really hope thats the problem because id rather replace the torque converter than the whole transmission or have it built
Mines doing that shudder , is it torqe converter?
Need the TLDR
What is TLDR?
@@cincydieselrepair6893 Too Long Didn't Read
Wonder if this is my problem sometimes it starts and runs fine and other times it's a bitch to get it to stay running long enough to keep running
good info!
The problem I have is the truck cranks everytime and shuts down after 5 seconds and it runs fine for those 5 seconds. thenit takes 2 or 3 cycles and turning truck over and over again and it finally cranks and lops for an few seconds and runs all day long. this happens weather hot or cold outside , no difference . also as long as engine has been running I can crank back with ease anytime. it just seems to happen if I let set for 10 plus hours . can you help?
james nolen .glow plugs and relay .?
Ha...I found it..Never mind..found just after I messaged you. Too funny

It got a stroke and died
Or fuel filter

Getting one that runs until it gets up to temp then shuts off will start again when cold could that be the ipr
