Mister, Thanks for the Video on the 7.3 connector under the valve cover. this is exactly what is wrong with my sons 7.3 because I saw the short on the valve cover and fixed it which is probably the reason the one inside the valve cover shorts out and melts; drawing too many amps the wrong way. We have been losing out marbles trying to figure this one out... Thanks again!
Great tech tip that I will remember. My 2003 F350 is still getting “broke in” at 285,000 miles but I’ll keep this fix stored in memory if I ever have the same performance issue.

I started having problems finding my most common sockets & then noticed that the rest of them were difficult to read the sizes on them after 30 years so I went into the house and got my shotgun and forced them all to run put of my garage at gun point so I could make room for sockets that were satin black with bright gold numbering. They are happy and stay put in their individual spots! At gunpoint!!!😳😉

And, I also have had two Ford Diesels including my 2000 that looks identical to yours. I have 236K miles on the clock and really not having any major issues. I like to scan these TH-cams now and then during lunch breaks just to keep educated for when I need to fix something. I like watching like minded guys like yourself. Thanks

This video is very helpful this problem was a 2 week hunt just for this the check engine light will illuminate if it’s still pending once the problem is corrected the CEL will go away
For anyone with this issue, the dorman gasket has no internal connector, and inner harness is hardwired as part of the gasket. Eliminates that point of failure, and have not seen anything but good reports as to function and durability as a gasket and wiring assembly.

Soooooo I have to thank you for putting up this video. Mine is running super rough. Sounds like a freight train but thats an improvement since it's sat for the last 4 years at least. I had it idling and went to go look for that rub spot you were talking about, lifted the harness and she died. I can duplicate it 100% of the time so now I have to chase a short, but it's got me in the right direction. Idk if I ever would have found that issue without your video so thank you.
I would have changed the fluids before startimg something after four years. probably dump some ar900 and 6500-d arch oil in it also for good measure on injectors

Early 7.3's typically need new injectors and interior valve cover wiring around 300k miles. Replacing mine fixed 3 issues in one swoop. (Bad cold start, vibration while driving until at FULL running temp, and poor fuel milage). Use OEM components. Mine is a 01 with just over 252k miles.

Never saw you do so, first thing I would have done is hook up a pc with forscan and looked at my IPR values. Would not have been the cause this time, but it is a frequent failure point on the 7.3l I have two of them, both have taken me out. Also the sensor, when others have stated to pull the plug and check for oil leaking into the connector, they are correct. The oil isn't hurting anything, but it shows the sensor it's self is failing.

417,000 miles...Damn. I would say you got more than your monies worth out of that truck. Like you, I am a Chevy guy, but my son has a Ford focus, so I find myself having to work on that pos once in awhile. Lol
You have a cool nomad back there. I’m envious of that lol. The old blood has a good color to it so it looks like you’re pretty healty. Lol as if you can tell by the color of your blood. Im having a similar problem with my 7.3 so hopefully this is what i need to do to mine. I have to tow my truck to the mechanic which is 100 miles away and pay them to fix it then have it towed back to me which cost $278 per tow. Every time it breaks down i have to pay $556 just in towing fees on top of repairs and parts. I’m in my truck for a fortune lol. I bought a new crate 7.3 engine and transmission right after i bought the truck. And I’ve fixed so many things on this truck since.

What you did was take a redesigned valve cover gasket and fix what wasn't broke, to begin with. The original design didn't have a proper catch, so a Ford mechanic named Ron figured how to lock it together. They have since modified the gasket and it no longer comes apart. Not even sure if it would work properly on the new ones. Don't recommend anyone else break there's, just for something to do. Also, if you need to take off your up and down pipes from your inter-cooler again. Remove the clamp on the cast piece as opposed to the soft aluminum pipe. It's easy to crush those flimsy pipes over tightening the clamps when your re-installing them, where as that won't happen on the spider.
My truck doing the same damn thing. When I do get it to start it runs like crap and WILL NOT go over 2000 rpm then it will eventually just die again. Sadly replacing the harness in the valve covers did not fix it.
I'm going to pretend I know what that means... I agree. I am soo lucky it wasn't the H Pump. Haha I appreciate you watching and maybe I'll learn what that stuff is next time it breaks down.
im having the same issue but mine clears up after a min or 2 of it running but when i give it pedal it starts cutting out now once its running for a few its fine
More plastic moving parts means more problems I have owned a couple 97's 94 couple 91's and a few late 80s the 73 IDI is a good motor also is the 69 it is built more like 12 valve Cummins you don't need much to fire it up you can get your glow plugs right on top you can get your injectors right on top only downside is it's doesn't have a lot of power that motor unless you put turbos on it I like it but I alternated like the 73 Powerstroke even the 12 valve but when it comes to reliability I've had some issues with the truck that'll just minor it has a 1997 I bought it from the original owners single cab Lariat four-wheel drive with the Dana 60 Dodge model it's been a very good truck it's got its issues couple of the transmission lines I've had to fix a few times cuz they rub on frame and minor things brake lines Etc you know what's a 25 year old truck but man that motor runs good everyday we'll see you in a couple years I want to preserve its life and take the motor out when I have another backup vehicle that I know is solid and dependable. And just do light reseal and so forth and the next thing when I get back to the 73 Powerstroke sat there very temperamental Motors it seems like I do more messing around with that 73 than any other ones I'm fixing one now I've owned for about five years I just put all new glow plugs it does seem to start easier in the cold now unless smoke I've had the motor out of the truck once and almost out of the truck twice from the first time I pulled the trans the trans went out a few years ago about 4 years ago put a new clutch in whole new Trans in all new tires brakes everything it is a wrecker on top of it and they did not take care of it very well so I've sunk a lot of money what really upsets me is having the engine up out of the truck it's always ran pretty good when I the first time I change the oil pan cuz it was starting to leak Isis you know what I got the trans out I am going to do rear main seal new Trans with clutch new oil pan and oil cooler gaskets I did all that and it still started to leak even with the Ford Motorcraft after about a few months that Ford Motorcraft gray sealant and I left the engine sit a few days before I put that ceiling in the pan back on hoping and praying that it would not leak so about a year-and-a-half later then it started to really get bad and about a year later the height the truck did not want to fire at all so I wind up putting a brand new high pressure oil pump in it I bought it to O'Reilly's I don't know if it was a genuine Ford Motorcraft but it cost me over $500 I reinstalled that new braided fuel lines truck is pretty much been kept inside its whole life as being in a Service Garage a tow truck pray small service station gas station and when I purchased it back in 2016 it needed quite a bit but the motor ran great but ever since I replaced that high pressure oil pump it seems like it takes awhile for it to kick onto startup specially when it sits for awhile but after it starts and it runs it'll fire right back up if it's that same day it'll run good all day on and off no problems when you let it sit for a week or a couple weeks and then try to fire it that's when it seems like it gives you issues now the 12 valve Cummins I got a Thinkin sit for 6 months a little fire rate up no issues that's what I like about that 12 valve but the 73 is a good engine to I'm having a little check engine light pop on mine after I had the engine out a few months ago I just had the valve covers off I didn't see anything really major noticeable and I think I already did new valve cover gaskets but I have a 1997 so I know they sell the updated ones but I did not go with them I went with the original Ford motor crafts and one thing I like about the originals is that if it is a issue with the injectors you can pull each plug from each side of the head there is four injectors on each side of the motor and you can pull that injector plug harness and it will stop working two injectors and then if you pull the other one on the same side of the engine or the head it'll stop the other injectors and you'll see a difference now I'm not saying that I'm not an expert at the injectors but for my acknowledged that if the injectors ain't working whatever which one you pole on each side of the engine or cylinder head while it's running if there's no difference that's the injector or the wiring leading to that injector that has the issue no I pulled mine each individually while runs while the check engine light and you can see it makes a major difference and also pulling the valve covers and watching the oil spurt out of each injector while it's running that injector is working weather how good or how strong it is working if it looks like it's putting out the same oil flow in the rest seven of them left and right sides Banks and I'm injectors more likely are good and then if you got a small scan so you can do a cylinder contribution test and an injector test and if that comes back good and passes little buzz all your injectors then you should be good but my check engine lights on I'm going to do PSI test on the high pressure oil pump even though it has been replaced you also have a low oil pump the contributes to the high pressure oil pump but this truck has had a new oil pump back in 2018 with brand new oil pan rebuild oil cooler brand new high pressure oil pump all new glow plugs braided fuel lines with a pressure gauge to show you what the pressure is that you are getting good fuel so I'm thinking that it's either the crank sensor camshaft sensor or something in the O-rings of the injectors or something in the wire ring leading to the injectors and when I first started up once in awhile the check engine light will come on then it'll clear up then it'll stop and then come back on and still feel like it has no power and then if you shut it off and wait a minute less than a minute and let the glow plugs cycle where the light shuts off it'll fire rate up and run good it happened to me yesterday where the check engine light went off stayed off and then pop back on and couldn't really notice that much of a difference while it was on but a little bit so hopefully I get mine figured out you get yours figured out also
Nice work on the diagnostics with no scanner! Out of curiosity, did you measure resistance of the glow plugs with the new harness? I have a ‘96 and those are notorious for melting harnesses when the 2 ohm glow plug drops to a short. thanks for posting the video

-utI'm new at this. My 97 F250 7.3 HD Diesel starts. That is it. Try to accelerate but there is nothing. Can go into gear but apply gas and there is nothing. Checked transmission fluid - full; changed a very bad fuel filter and still nothing. Live out in the boonies so hard to get towed to a mechanic. What do you suggest.

I have heard of a problem where the engine will only idle, and it was caused by a bad microswitch on the throttle pedal. It sounds like you may have an only idle situation, but I'm not sure. I've heard it is actually fairly common. I'm not sure how much the shop would have charged. Think of all the fun I would have missed out on if I paid someone else to do it. Lame.
Very unscientifically. I ran it a bit, then quickly and carefully touched each exhaust manifold. The cold side is the one not working correctly. You may want to use a different method, but it worked for me. Thanks for watching and for the question.

With the MM sockets, you really have to keep an eye on the 10 MM socket. The 10 MM sockets always seem to make a run for it.

If memory serves me, that's the same as a 'worn out' 7/16, or maybe its the 8mm.

Check for the quarter when you do an oil change. When mine came lose, I found two dimes in the pan with the dirty oil. It still owes me 5 cents.

I definitely never typed in anything like that man. I typed in 7.3 IPR. I would never say the truck is anything other than great engineering.

When you want to see if your exhaust manifold is hot, shoot a little water on it, look for the sizzle, save your hands.

Never saw you do so, first thing I would have done is hook up a pc with forscan and looked at my IPR values. Would not have been the cause this time, but it is a frequent failure point on the 7.3l I have two of them, both have taken me out. Also the sensor, when others have stated to pull the plug and check for oil leaking into the connector, they are correct. The oil isn't hurting anything, but it shows the sensor it's self is failing.

You have a cool nomad back there. I’m envious of that lol. The old blood has a good color to it so it looks like you’re pretty healty. Lol as if you can tell by the color of your blood. Im having a similar problem with my 7.3 so hopefully this is what i need to do to mine. I have to tow my truck to the mechanic which is 100 miles away and pay them to fix it then have it towed back to me which cost $278 per tow. Every time it breaks down i have to pay $556 just in towing fees on top of repairs and parts. I’m in my truck for a fortune lol. I bought a new crate 7.3 engine and transmission right after i bought the truck. And I’ve fixed so many things on this truck since.

What you did was take a redesigned valve cover gasket and fix what wasn't broke, to begin with. The original design didn't have a proper catch, so a Ford mechanic named Ron figured how to lock it together. They have since modified the gasket and it no longer comes apart. Not even sure if it would work properly on the new ones. Don't recommend anyone else break there's, just for something to do. Also, if you need to take off your up and down pipes from your inter-cooler again. Remove the clamp on the cast piece as opposed to the soft aluminum pipe. It's easy to crush those flimsy pipes over tightening the clamps when your re-installing them, where as that won't happen on the spider.

My truck doing the same damn thing. When I do get it to start it runs like crap and WILL NOT go over 2000 rpm then it will eventually just die again. Sadly replacing the harness in the valve covers did not fix it.

The Dorman gaskets incorperate this connection as one piece or eliminates this connection, but the rest of the gasket messes up

More plastic moving parts means more problems I have owned a couple 97's 94 couple 91's and a few late 80s the 73 IDI is a good motor also is the 69 it is built more like 12 valve Cummins you don't need much to fire it up you can get your glow plugs right on top you can get your injectors right on top only downside is it's doesn't have a lot of power that motor unless you put turbos on it I like it but I alternated like the 73 Powerstroke even the 12 valve but when it comes to reliability I've had some issues with the truck that'll just minor it has a 1997 I bought it from the original owners single cab Lariat four-wheel drive with the Dana 60 Dodge model it's been a very good truck it's got its issues couple of the transmission lines I've had to fix a few times cuz they rub on frame and minor things brake lines Etc you know what's a 25 year old truck but man that motor runs good everyday we'll see you in a couple years I want to preserve its life and take the motor out when I have another backup vehicle that I know is solid and dependable. And just do light reseal and so forth and the next thing when I get back to the 73 Powerstroke sat there very temperamental Motors it seems like I do more messing around with that 73 than any other ones I'm fixing one now I've owned for about five years I just put all new glow plugs it does seem to start easier in the cold now unless smoke I've had the motor out of the truck once and almost out of the truck twice from the first time I pulled the trans the trans went out a few years ago about 4 years ago put a new clutch in whole new Trans in all new tires brakes everything it is a wrecker on top of it and they did not take care of it very well so I've sunk a lot of money what really upsets me is having the engine up out of the truck it's always ran pretty good when I the first time I change the oil pan cuz it was starting to leak Isis you know what I got the trans out I am going to do rear main seal new Trans with clutch new oil pan and oil cooler gaskets I did all that and it still started to leak even with the Ford Motorcraft after about a few months that Ford Motorcraft gray sealant and I left the engine sit a few days before I put that ceiling in the pan back on hoping and praying that it would not leak so about a year-and-a-half later then it started to really get bad and about a year later the height the truck did not want to fire at all so I wind up putting a brand new high pressure oil pump in it I bought it to O'Reilly's I don't know if it was a genuine Ford Motorcraft but it cost me over $500 I reinstalled that new braided fuel lines truck is pretty much been kept inside its whole life as being in a Service Garage a tow truck pray small service station gas station and when I purchased it back in 2016 it needed quite a bit but the motor ran great but ever since I replaced that high pressure oil pump it seems like it takes awhile for it to kick onto startup specially when it sits for awhile but after it starts and it runs it'll fire right back up if it's that same day it'll run good all day on and off no problems when you let it sit for a week or a couple weeks and then try to fire it that's when it seems like it gives you issues now the 12 valve Cummins I got a Thinkin sit for 6 months a little fire rate up no issues that's what I like about that 12 valve but the 73 is a good engine to I'm having a little check engine light pop on mine after I had the engine out a few months ago I just had the valve covers off I didn't see anything really major noticeable and I think I already did new valve cover gaskets but I have a 1997 so I know they sell the updated ones but I did not go with them I went with the original Ford motor crafts and one thing I like about the originals is that if it is a issue with the injectors you can pull each plug from each side of the head there is four injectors on each side of the motor and you can pull that injector plug harness and it will stop working two injectors and then if you pull the other one on the same side of the engine or the head it'll stop the other injectors and you'll see a difference now I'm not saying that I'm not an expert at the injectors but for my acknowledged that if the injectors ain't working whatever which one you pole on each side of the engine or cylinder head while it's running if there's no difference that's the injector or the wiring leading to that injector that has the issue no I pulled mine each individually while runs while the check engine light and you can see it makes a major difference and also pulling the valve covers and watching the oil spurt out of each injector while it's running that injector is working weather how good or how strong it is working if it looks like it's putting out the same oil flow in the rest seven of them left and right sides Banks and I'm injectors more likely are good and then if you got a small scan so you can do a cylinder contribution test and an injector test and if that comes back good and passes little buzz all your injectors then you should be good but my check engine lights on I'm going to do PSI test on the high pressure oil pump even though it has been replaced you also have a low oil pump the contributes to the high pressure oil pump but this truck has had a new oil pump back in 2018 with brand new oil pan rebuild oil cooler brand new high pressure oil pump all new glow plugs braided fuel lines with a pressure gauge to show you what the pressure is that you are getting good fuel so I'm thinking that it's either the crank sensor camshaft sensor or something in the O-rings of the injectors or something in the wire ring leading to the injectors and when I first started up once in awhile the check engine light will come on then it'll clear up then it'll stop and then come back on and still feel like it has no power and then if you shut it off and wait a minute less than a minute and let the glow plugs cycle where the light shuts off it'll fire rate up and run good it happened to me yesterday where the check engine light went off stayed off and then pop back on and couldn't really notice that much of a difference while it was on but a little bit so hopefully I get mine figured out you get yours figured out also

Nice work on the diagnostics with no scanner! Out of curiosity, did you measure resistance of the glow plugs with the new harness? I have a ‘96 and those are notorious for melting harnesses when the 2 ohm glow plug drops to a short.

Rotate your batteries once a year from left to right your right battery will wear down quicker then the left cause the starter draws off it first.

I have 95 F250 7.3 cuts out going down the hiway don't die all the way just cuts out between 30 and up 75 not all the time

Use a crayon to identify hotter exhaust ports if you dont have a heat gun, it will melt faster then a cooler port

-utI'm new at this. My 97 F250 7.3 HD Diesel starts. That is it. Try to accelerate but there is nothing. Can go into gear but apply gas and there is nothing. Checked transmission fluid - full; changed a very bad fuel filter and still nothing. Live out in the boonies so hard to get towed to a mechanic. What do you suggest.

I have heard of a problem where the engine will only idle, and it was caused by a bad microswitch on the throttle pedal. It sounds like you may have an only idle situation, but I'm not sure. Very unscientifically. I ran it a bit, then quickly and carefully touched each exhaust manifold. The cold side is the one not working correctly. You may want to use a different method, but it worked for me. Thanks for watching and for the question.
