  • We test the 2023 Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle Hybrid and see why it's the ultimate minivan. Why buy a full-size SUV?
The 2023 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is one of only two cars that are still in production with the Chrysler name, the other one is the Chrysler 300. Chrysler claims that this minivan will hold up to 60 gallons of milk, a claim that I’m not going to challenge but I am going to test it and see if it is a better option than a full-size SUV.

    What’s under the hood?
The standard powertrain is a 287-hp V-6 that pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Hybrid model has a DOHC 24-valve Atkinson-cycle 3.6-liter V-6 and 2 permanent-magnet AC electric motors making a combined 260 hp, which is less than the gas-only model but it does offer 326 ft-lbs. of torque. All the hybrid power is routed through Chrysler’s eFlite electrically variable transmission which is very good.
With less power, it does prove to be slower if drag races are your thing, Zero to sixty takes 7.8 seconds but fuel economy is the key here since the electric motors allow for up to 32 miles of electric-only range and it gets about 30 mpg on the highway, the 16-kilowatt-hour battery starts using all its electrons right away and when it runs out it reverts to being a normal hybrid even with an almost depleted battery.
    Charging
If you do decide to charge the battery at home on a normal 110-volt outlet, it takes about 14 hours to fill up, while a level two 220-volt outlet takes just two hours.
    How Much?
This is the top-of-the-range Pinnacle model and including destination, it costs a shade over $62k, the only option being the Fathom Blue Pearl coat exterior for $495.
In order to get the equivalent cargo capacity out of a full-size SUV, you need to get a Suburban, and a bare-bones basic one starts at $57,000. If you want similar luxuries as the Pinnacle that price will go up considerably once you start checking boxes.
    2023 Chrysler Pacifica Pinnacle Numbers
    BASE PRICE: $59,995

    CURB WEIGHT: 5,060 lb
    0-60 MPH: 7.8 seconds

In my middle age I raced motorcycles. My transport at the time was a ‘97 Dodge Caravan and it was near perfect. The 3.6 L V6 had plenty of torque to tow a Kendon trailer and Godzilla (my RS125). With the rear seat left at home, the cargo space easily swallowed up the tools, fuel, tires, stands, leathers, boots, helmet, and spare parts needed for a race weekend. When I got to the track, I’d take out the middle seat and use it as a couch in the garage. With the van unloaded and the seats out, there was plenty of room to spend the night in sleeping bags on foam mats. Minivans are the most evolved form of automotive transportation. My only regret was selling the Caravan when I got too old to cope with the inevitable injuries that come with racing motorcycles. If I still had it, I’d be tempted to set it up for racing in the 24 Hours of Lemons. I wonder if they’d let me carry a second driver and mechanic in the back.

Excellent review! With the hybrid, whenever you accelerated or let off gas pedal did you hear a click?

I own one of this. I got a 2023 model. I had to say the 2023 model missed few things.
Third row used to have a sunroof. That’s why there is a concave there.
2nd row used to have a vacuum
    3rd row have automatic fold.
For 23 model, all those three are gone :(

3 panel sunroof went away with the 22 model year I believe. The hybrid never had the vacuum or power folding seats.

@@gingafyd I’m pretty sure it was in my order sheet. Same with vacuum but, ultimately if the manufacturer wants to short you on it, there is nothing you can do

The third sunroof is gone, but the other two were available on the 2023 non-hybrid versions. The vac and power third row were standard on the Pinnacle and part of the Uconnect theatre group on the Limited. The vac was also part of that group for the Touring L. It’s the same for 2024.

I hope a new generation of the hybrid is around the corner and they streamline their PHEV powertrain with the turbo 4 Jeep offering. I look forward to what they can do with updated, more efficient motors and turbo 4. I'd love to see 40 mile ev range with increased power and efficiency with the Turbo 4.

I was wondering if you could drive this car in a 100% electric mode. Sadly couldn’t figure it out when I had one.

@@TheDrivewireuh it’s a plug-in hybrid. What’s the point of the plug-in if it can’t drive as an EV?

it tries to go electric as far as possible, but it is not under your control. The internal combustion engine will run automatically to provide heat for the battery (in cold places it will run on gas on every cold startup). It will also turn on the engine for extra power afaik. .@@TheVic18t

You can drive it on electric only under 32 miles. So running around a short daily commute could possibly be done without buying fuel.

I couldn't believe that the 3rd row was manual fold and didn't have it's own sunroof....what happened?! Our 2018 Limited (non hybrid) has power folding 3rd row and a second sunroof for them. Weird

You can’t get the extra sunroof anymore, but the power third row is still available on the non-hybrid versions. I don’t think it has ever been an option for the hybrid like he was driving in this video.

@@davidhypes5228 ah, makes sense. To be honest the power is good but sometimes I wish I could manually fold since it's so much faster. Delete of rear sunroof must be due to "global supply issues"🤦‍♂️

Would never buy a Chrysler. Made the mistake of buying the Pinnacle, has been stalling for last 6 months on the highway. Each time I take it to the dealership they say they fix it but have not. Waste of money. Check the NHTSA, Chrysler has a history of stalling vehicles.

I have a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan and no issues.
I previously had 3 different Toyota’s. They all had more problems than my Dodge.
Toyota dealers also do the we fixed it lies. After 24 years I had enough of Toyota.
I do not miss them one bit.
