    • @GrinddalCPH
      @GrinddalCPH 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This Sucks That does not mean it was not a simpler time, it was indeed in many facets of life. There are many other issues today that the 80s did not have. Yes it may be simpler to be gay today, but life as a whole was simpler back then.

      @@GrinddalCPH: If you're narrowly talking about the internet and cell phone you're no doubt using right this second, then remember when you wanted to know something and had to wait for the library to open up Monday, go thumb through books and hopefully the one you took home had a satisfactory answer. Now, 6 letters: Google Much, much, much simpler times now.

    • @GrinddalCPH
      @GrinddalCPH 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This Sucks I am not talking about the internet. I am talking about how we measure ourselves, and how we are exposed to other peoples perfect lives and want that for ourselves. People present themselves as perfect on social media, and this creates some very bad dynamics. Also, we are the first generation to ever make less than our parents, even tho we are better educated. We have higher suicide rates, thw world is more polluted, resources are going at a rate that we cannot regenerate them for the first time ever. We have very little social interactions. In some ways the library was simpler. We have SJWs, PC culture, much much more government control and interference, A middle class that is dissapearing. More inflation. I could go on.

    everyone is grungy looking. no one to impress. just living - being themselves in a grungy environment. very interesting perspective. I've read that because of the AIDS crisis, prior began to REALLY focus on looking "perfect" to disassociate from being suspected with the virus. That's how the 90s started and continued; then the advent of social media pushed that strive for perfection to the Nth degree

      I was 15 in 1983 and was a very closeted insecure overweight teenager living in NYC. I remember AIDS just beginning but it was so far away from my world at the time. These videos are incredible and we should thank Nelson Sullivan every day that we have this footage. Much love.

    At 4:30: a River Club promotion placard. The River Club was famous party-promoter Steven Cohn's own short-lived club in the former Twelve West space at 12th Street and West Street just up the road. The River Club didn't last too long. That building was later demolished.

    That neighborhood is a ghost town now. Too sad. I remember walking down 21st btwn 7th & 8th Aves. early '90s and I crossed paths with a guy that had AIDS. We looked into each others eyes & I saw fear & pain. He looked like a walking cadaver. I felt so sorry for him. Prayed for him. Never saw him again. I can still see his face. His eyes.... haunting.

    Wow I wish we could be transported back to a kinder and gentler time, less the AIDS epidemic. It was such a wonderful place to be part of the gay community back then as it was so tight nit and everyone looked out for everyone else. Yes it was very scary, sad, and tragic with what was going on, but there was such compassion and empathy for other gays. There was none of this "shade" shit and reality tv acting that goes on now. People were just nicer then and was not distracted by phones and other technology.
