!986/87 was when the AIDS epidemic really started to take off. In 1985 I knew no one with AIDS/HIV, but by 1987/88 I had lost half a dozen friends, and It just got worse from there. Every year I was losing 2 to 3 friends and by 1995, all my friends were gone. Their deaths haunt me today.
I remember being in both of these. At 1:53, I'm driving my 1962 El Dorado Biarritz with my best friend Rue Starr for the March on Washington. May he rest in peace. That was a great day! Thank you for posting this
Wonderful! I was there! 1987 was when I traveled to Long Beach from Phoenix to the Gay Pride Celebration and then got a job in the South Bay as the Director of an HIV antibody testing site and education program. So nice to see this video. Thank you. Best wishes from Cambodia.
I look at videos like these and can't help but wonder how many of these brave souls are with us today? shoutout to the survivors of such an awful time. signed, a younger gay ❤️
Yes, my guy and I did celebrate every year back then and young LGBTQ+ folks today don't know all we endured, seeing so many loved ones dying within our community. Everyone must remember the freedoms we fought for. I wasn't easy.
@Adam B a lot of LGBTQ individuals were MURDERED just for being who they are. It's not right, but it happened. Trying to downplay the tragedies they suffered and fought so hard for is toxic. I'm sure those who have survived are proud and waving their flag with pride. But we cannot forget the past for it has the potential to repeat itself. It's like saying "when slavery ended, everyone got along and they all lived happily ever after"
Oh the 80s, when we were just Gay, before the Q and T got added. It'll be another 10/11 years before i discover my local Gay Village and attend a Pride Parade, it seemed almost magical at the time and helped dissolve any shame or guilt a 90s gay boy carried from the bullying in the 80s. Funny how now, my shame and guilt have returned but not from my sexuality, but "my community", whom seemingly have decided to play Water Sports and Scat Games all over the work that was done by the Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of the past, which already included our Trans brothers and sisters.
I was born the year later and for me it looks like everything was so simple and minimalistic. I cringe about todays parades. Too much kitsch. And people act like they are out from the zoo
There was a very telling scene in that Showtime Show about a group of Lesbians - The L-Word, about gay pride parade, a old lady told one of the characters - it's really Gay Shame, that most gays had more shame than pride, that's what was said in a gay themed tv show and non of the characters ever really seemed happy.....
You have to keep in mind that at least a few of these parades were in their early years, and as I recall there were often problems with politics among event organizers.
This is 35 years ago. Think again. I was there in West Hollywood In The 80’s. People got murdered and assaulted, leaving gay bars. It wasn’t uncommon to be yelled profanities by passing cars…. Those who came out then were brave and tough…no Bruce Jenner anywhere to be found.

@@ronan7695 dude the 80s was only 40 years ago I think I’d just be old
everyone in the entire world hated you for one small thing though
It was fun but we always had AIDS on our minds and all the hate it brought out in people.

My first pride parade. What a great day. Friends on floats.
To think, while these folks were out having Pride, my parents were in month one of raising a gay guy from an infant.

Luv right back atchya. I'm one of 'em & almost 61 and still here and have, almost all my marbles left :-)
The men were so hot in the 80s
It's a completely different world than the one I grew up in.
We didn't have a parade like that and we didn't know there were people like that.

Thanks for uploading this. Hope we can see the whole thing uploaded soon :)
1987 was the year I turned 21 and the year I came out and went to bars.
If I was a guy, I'd be gay.

SIGHHHHHHHHHHH.......RICK DONOVAN. R.I.P. And we're ALL STILL HERE!!! BLESS ALLLLL OF US AND VOTE VOTE VOTE THE RETHUGLIKKKLANS OUT THIS NOVEMBER!!!
This was hard to watch - it made me really miss Pride badly. Damn 2020..
Sadly, alot of these men probably didn't make it 😞
@Adam B that's an example of toxicity

@stayminty2682 yes but AIDS was rampant in this time
Hardly any attendees compared to today’s standard.
Hot bodies in 1987 -> don't necessarily need abs

90s were a close second
Lezzies playing trumpets. Nothing better!! 🙌🏽
I see the 80s were great even for the LGBTQ

Um...the 80s being great for queer people is not true, trans and gay youth being kicked out onto the streets, aids, bullying,

Is Rick Donovan the gay porn star still alive??!! Hope he is still with us!
I believe he is, but very low-key. He'd definitely have a successful Only Fans page if he started one as an older man today.

I wonder how many have died of AIDS😔?
More than you would EVERRRRRRRR be able to endure being told. TRUST ME.

Nope! Some of us are still here. I was infected with HIV in 1986 and I'm still here.
Not really, this was 1987, most of them are probably in their 50s or 60s. Some of them probably died but the majority would still be alive.
