Hey guys! I'm so excited to be posting this Q&A with Archie - We talk about parrot training, parrot tricks, the cost of owning a parrot, toilet training birds and more.
Archie is a Solomon Island Eclectus Parrot, and he's an absolute joy to own. Birds have always been my favourite animal - i've owned budgies (parakeets), finches, cockatiels, galahs, quaker parrots, lorikeets, doves and chickens, and I hope that these tips are helpful for you if you're considering buying a pet bird.
I probably sound a bit harsh towards the end of the video, but I do want to reenforce my belief that you shouldn't just buy a pet bird because you see one online and think it looks like fun. Birds are a huge commitment, and they require as much attention as a human child (if not more attention sometimes).
They scream, make a mess, poo in random places, live an extremely long time and can cause family trouble if you live with someone that can't put up with their antics. Make sure everyone in the household is onboard and understands the commitment that owning a pet bird requires, and make sure you do your research before buying one!
That being said, Archie is such an amazing part of our lives, and we wouldn't change him for the world - hence my life motto, #thebirdstays 😍

So basically, as a mom I can confirm that having a bird is like having a baby/toddler.
1. They scream
2. They poop every 15 minutes.
3. You say one word to them over and over until they repeat.
4. They try to steal all your food.

One difference (personally): Birds are cuter and I would take one anyday over a baby.
My youngest is 28, and I'm still waiting for him to grow up....so.... still the same thing. ;)

My (almost) 2 year old cousin always screams at me and says "cat! Cat!" all the time. Or she yells "Dog! Where the dog go?"
She poops in her diaper almost immediately after it's changed
It's not too difficult to get her to say stuff but you gotta keep saying it

as an african grey owner I can confirm they are chainsaws on legs haha. sam should be careful with what he says with the bird though! usually they can understand :-0 i would hate to see it make Archie sad

Fluttershy Squish it depends what kind of place you live and your lifestyle! if you're more of a one person off on their own type, African greys make very good companions! if you want a social bird id go with a conure or a male eclectus like Alex has!

Pretty Pastel Please get him checked at the vet specifically for infections frequently, they pop up out of nowhere with no signs & the lil guys can’t handle that for long 🙁💞
Alexandra S nearly 20 🙁 He went through a few blood transfusions to try and get rid of the infection, but they didn’t take 😞
ARCHIE SINGING IN THE SHOWER IS SO CUTE OMG ❤ I don't have a question for the boys but I just wanted to say that this is so cool that you are all ok with each other. I was myself bestfriend with my ex (who I have dated 3 years) and my current boyfriend (whe have been 4 years together) was his guy best friend too! Actually I met my current boyfriend when I was with my ex and I didn't break up with him for my current boyfriend, it have a 3 years range between the two relationship. I am still friend with my ex but since a year his new girlfriend didn't like the fact that I was his ex and best friend so she pulled him away from me and it broke my heart so badly to lose my bestfriend over his girlfriend. I really hope this won't happen to you, it's really painfull! Anyway, I love you, your bird and your videos! ❤
Oh my goodness, I totally understand - Sam's last girlfriend after me did exactly the same thing! It made her so angry that we were friends, and she wouldn't let him talk to me. Safe to say, that relationship didn't last long. Sam and I have always said that we wouldn't be with someone if that person didn't accept that we were friends. I'm so sorry that happened to you, and I really hope that you and him can be friends again one day!
They probably live uptown with one of the parents got them the place an it's better with 3 or 4 or so to have a better place an safer in numbers or something like that
My first boyfriend who I am still bestfriend/brother and sister,and who was a great friend of mine and now we barely talk...asked if she could ask him out. I said sure,well let’s just say when she started dating him it was if I talked about him,saw him,or got to hang out with him and she didn’t she gave me a mean glare. She told me I couldn’t joke about it or joke with him and apparently we couldn’t “pick/mess” with her because he wasn’t there to protect her. I was getting aggravated at it on how she was trying to be protective of him and trying to keep me out of the picture. Some people said she saw me as a threat where our closest friends said she was being crazy and saw how she was acting too. I was even sure she hated that we were still close as it got closer to finals at the college and him and I were in a concert orchestra together. Well I was cold during a rehearsal and borrowed his jacket,well he never took it back so I had it in my truck. I was cold that day and all I had was his jacket so I wore it. She stayed far away from me and wouldn’t even talk to me. He did break up with her and still talks to me and we stay close.

I feel like archie tries to "bite" sam because he senses his mood toward him, he doesnt seem to like the bird much and archie just wants to be loved! so he is nipping him saying "hey you, im great why dont you like me?!"
We just got a eclectus parrot today, he (charlie) wasn't the one that i expected but my mom found him, he's 3 months old, some of his feathers are still growing but he's absolutely adorable, and i fully agree that they make really cute sounds 😂 it's our first day together and he already pooped on our couch but i still love him. When it was time for bed i saw him yawn before i covered his cage 😭💖

@@sammie8002 It's always a good thing to opt for natural (he loves wood, ropes, paper), look out for rubber, i bought him a rubber ball for dogs but he was able to tear them in just a few minutes! he was gonna eat it when i saw him. He loves destroying his toys, he tastes the wood sometimes but doesn't eat it. They're curious creatures, they'll play w/ anything you give them (tho they'll have their favorite, for him it's the wood ball for rabbits) Good luck!! :)

Also I’m extremely jealous as to how well behaved Archie is when you’re clipping his nails. My tiel wriggles and squeaks and bites like you wouldn’t believe...the vet has to call TWO assistants in to help her, and if I do it, it takes us an hour

I give all of the same warnings about buying a ferret/ferrets. They are a LOT of work and take up a lot of your time. I have 3 and wouldn't ever think of re-homing them. In fact all 3 are rescues. They can break into or out of everything, they steal everything, they need a specific diet, and they will test your patience but they are great animals. That being said, they are definitely NOT for everyone. I would love to own a big bird but I know right now I don't have the time or money to take care of one properly, seeing as most of my time goes to my 3 ferrets. That's OK I can still watch your bird videos to get my fix. Archie is a very cool bird.

I LOVE HIM SO MUCH! So I'm going to be getting a bird in the near future and I'm pretty dead set on either an Indian Ringneck or a Quaker, but now you have me wanting an Eclectus! I've also had birds all my life and when I moved from New York to Florida, I had to give away my Nandae Conure because he was "older" and I wasn't sure if he'd make the drive down. So we gave him to a bird sanctuary, but since then I've been missing having a bird and watching you with Archie has me almost salivating for one again. I have to be patient tho because I'm going to be moving again, so I want to wait until I'm settled before buying one. Now I have a lot to think about in terms of which kind because of how amazing Archie is. I love you guys! You should do more videos with Sam and Daniel! 💙💚💜
awww good luck finding your perfect birdy friend!! I've never owned a ringneck, but I have had a quaker. She was such a fantastic bird, so i'd always recommend them as pets 💚
Thank you! I can't wait until I can finally get one. I love the personality of ringnecks and they're gorgeous, but Quakers are so damn cute. We actually have wild Quakers here in South Florida, so I see and hear them all the time. I may just end up with a Ringneck AND a Quaker lol.
My little green cheek turned on me when he became a teenager. He only likes men so I can't pick him up anymore. With Archie being so young, be prepared for some rough times when he becomes hormonal. Definitely avoid petting his body too much or he may become aggressive due to sexual frustration. I'm sure you know this and will do very well with him as he grows. 😁
I can also vouch for African greys being heavy chewers. They are such fun with their sound effects and vocabulary though 😂

Actually in Australia you do need a licence to own Eclectus depending on which state you live in. QLD and WA both require licences and movement papers etc; however all other states only require a licence if it's a native subspecies :)

I had a pair of cockatiels for almost thirteen years. Lots of cuteness and whistling tunes over and over and over, among other things.
He's a cute buddy... I like his face when he gets his toes done. You can tell he listens to you as you speak.

Sam, you aren't alone, I don't like birds either. Terrified of them, personally, but birds in videos are nice to look at and learn about.
I just hate seeing birds IRL because I seem to exude some sort of "ATTACK ME!!!" pheromone or something. Trees aren't even safe to walk past in case there's a quiet bird in there; it'll find me... The sound of their flapping wings as they swoop is the worst >_< Doesn't matter if it's a big sulphur crested cockatoo, a magpie or a little willy wag tail, they're all mean when they see me. Apparently my cousin has the same problem; completely calm birds going super aggressive whenever they see her. I had one magpie chase me into my primary school library once, nowhere near its nest, and I had to hide under tables in there, surrounded by chairs for protection, until the grounds keeper and librarians could work together to corral it outside with brooms and things. Meanwhile it completely ignored everyone else. I don't do anything to provoke them either; usually I don't even know they're there until I hear the wings just next to my ear.
As for the next Q&A: I'm curious how the 3 of you humans came to live all together. Wasn't it awkward? I know a lot of people can be friends with their exes but I've never heard of the ex, gf, and current BF/fiancé living together before. Congrats on the engagement by the way!
Haha I'm the exact opposite, people will tell me constantly oh that dog bites or that birds aggressive be careful, so I just let them come to me in their own time and people are always surprised, thankfully it works on babies too.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING PEOPLE THINK ABOUT GETTING A BIRD SERIOUSLY!! I have two conures (one is 7 and one is 6) and could not imagine life without them, I've had them their whole lives, I actually raised Gizmo myself, she is 6 this year. Sookie is her older sister and is 7 this year!

I absolutely adore birds, Archie is honestly a big part of why I started watching your channel. I’ve had Budgies off and on my whole life, and I had a Quaker Parrot once, that actually turned out to be more my moms parrot, but I loved that bird. We ended up having to rehome her when I was 10 or 11 when my mom went back to work, because since she was working and obviously I was in school, it was stressing the bird out to be alone. I do miss that birdie, but she went to a good home. Now that I’m an adult now and out of school I have way more time to commit to a pet, so I’m hoping to get a parrot again soon. Seeing you with Archie just makes me miss having birds even more ❤️

I needed to let you know how much I’ve enjoyed this, you remind me of myself.. I’ve had parakeets when I was young, then I raised cockatiels that was a pretty big job, then I decided to go bigger, and bought a Nanday Conner ( very loud) & beautiful bird,
Then I took care of a friends blue nape Amazon named Sam.. I totally fell in love, what a smart bird.. he would say “ Radio 98 let’s Rock” also other phrases I can’t repeat, lol 😂...
I was sold,
I went to a breeder and ended up getting my yellow nape Amazon, Libby Lou, my beautiful smart fun feathered friend.. then decided to take in my African gray Morgan who was found abused and abandoned, I was so lucky to get him .. I count my blessings they have brought so much happiness to our life’s.. it’s been 30 yrs .. they will undoubtedly out live us.. So we have a will, and know they will be cared for by Good loving Bird people.. I’m 65 and never thought how many yrs they would really be with us.. best investment ever..

The most cutest thing EVER!!!!!!!!! but your right my boyfriend needs to see this, because he wants a similar bird to Archie, but we never are home, i have 3 jobs man, he works till 21 pm almost every day, he is always out.....No i would never do that to an animal :( For our life style a cat maybe...
I'm so glad to hear you say something so responsible!! Cats are very independent but can also be very loving - you'd be happy if you got one! Maybe one day in the future you could get a bird. I'd suggest a budgie or a cockatiel, as they do much better being alone for longer periods of time!

I have 21 birds, and hands down, my favorite sidekick is my Vosmaeri Eclectus. SO easy to take care of. I would say that, at least mine, is not a "handful" at all, but so calm, and so easy to work with me on things. He helps me get the other birds to bed, telling them to Step Up, and to get in the cages. He and my African Grey speak English to each other, as a common language. Birds are all wild, but I would say that an Eclectus is the closest thing to a "domesticated" bird, in regards to interaction with people. So calm, so friendly, so intelligent.

I love the singing in the shower. The female Eclectus (Jazzy) I have sings when she gets Bananas she loves them.
It's actually amazing that you have been very honest and said not to get these birds if you cannot give them the time.
I've got 27 parrots at mine at the moment and another 4 coming to me. All apart from one who came from a breeder but he was a gift to me all are rescues from all sorts of backgrounds.
Archie is also so cute ! Reminds me of my military macaw Oscar although Oscar has huge tantrums if you take something off him which is typical for a military he's a "Trust fund brat"
