Well, it's finally here. The long awaited Q&A with my fiancé Dan and my ex boyfriend Sam. The three of us have been living together for over a year, and in todays video, we explain why we live together, how we broke up, how my fiancé feels about the situation and where we see ourselves going from here. Sorta sounds like there's an implication of polyamory being not so wholesome? Honestly as a poly person it's pretty much a poly relationship though. Misconception: not all relationships that are part of poly are sexual/non-platonic. Most poly people are focused on having all the important people in their lives having fulfilling interpersonal relationships with themselves and those people's other important people. . . You could read the statement as if they were suggesting poly isn't wholesome. These two had a perfectly calm interaction. Expressing their side. Esp if you disagree with someome/others. you can state your opinions without making it into an argument or pissing contest. Then we have people like you that aren't satisfied with such exchanges of words. And would much prefer to make someone look like they over reacted or got their panties in a bunch over nothing. Right?! I was, and still kinda am, a metal head and I love that it surprises people. I love that about Alex too! Who's wants a metal head who looks like one any more? That's so 2000.
I changed from a punk princess with purple/burgundy hair to basically being a hippie type. It happens...still listen to the same music though (alt/punk).
I'm a metal head and I'm very seasonal. In summer when its warm enough I wear bright pastel shades (not super pale pastel) in green, orange and yellow. Then whenever its cold, its black, black, black and more black. And I'm also obsessed with holographic stuff. So my house and my wardrobe is this weird mix of brighter tones and multiple shades of black. Those of you who wear a lot of black will know what I mean!

Dating Sam would be amazing, because not only do you know he's super kind and wants the best for everyone (so he also wouldn't cheat or be abusive) but he's already shown his maturity in the fact he can live with his ex(Alex) and her fiance(Dan) and remain super close to both of them without it being an issue... that and he's super cute! I think a lot of people can't wrap their heads around the "how you remain friends?" concept because a lot of people don't go into relationships as friends first... They meet, in person or on online dating sites, and then decide to be romantic straight from the get-go without that solid foundation of friendship to weather things like a breakup. When you truly love someone (not necessarily romantically) you want them to be happy in life.

I'm currently trying to build up the courage to break up with my girlfriend, but not in a "i don't like this person anymore" way, just "i really think we'd be better off as friends" way, because we've been together for over 6 years, rarely seen each other more often than once a month, and we literally haven't really progressed since we were best friends as 15-yearolds. Good luck!! I know how hard it can be, but the longer you let it drag on, the harder it will be in the end. I'd suggest having a few gentle conversations about the relationship first, to see where she stands. You never know, she might feel a similar way to you. Make sure she understands that just because you don't want to be in a relationship with her any more, doesn't mean you don't want to have her in your life. I hope it all goes ok
@@PrettyPastelPlease Update: I finally kicked myself off the fence and we sat down and had a discussion over a video call, as we were unable to meet (we live 3h apart). I cried, she was super understanding, I repeated several times that I still loved her, just platonicslly now, and that I wanted her in my life still, and after some discussion she ended up feeling the same, thinking back - we attributed a lot of why it took so long to the 'comfort zone' aspect of it all, seeing as we both grew up in this relationship. We sat and talked for a couple of hours and decided to break up as friends, with the mutual understanding of "the only way you're getting rid of our friendship is with a restraining order". Thanks for your advice and support on this, Alex, it ended up better than my little anxiety brain could have hoped. ❤

I got together with my boyfriend (now fiance) when he was separated from his wife, who had left him for a younger guy. The divorce took awhile (because they didn't have a lot of money and had shared property to settle). Meanwhile, she had a baby with her new boyfriend. But through it all, they remained friends, and I was fine with her and her boyfriend. So for a couple of years, we loved to tell people how me and my boyfriend were off to visit his wife, her boytoy, and their love child. We were all actually a little disappointed when the divorce was finally settled and we couldn't say it anymore!

Clearly she was a young girl and had no idea that people can still be really good friends with their ex. Not every break up is going to result in the things that happen in Taylor Swift's music. If you were best friends before, there's no reason why you can't continue to be friends after you've broken up. I don't understand why people think that just because your exes doesn't mean you can't be friends. My parents are divorced and my dad got remarried last year, yet my mom, dad, and stepmom get along just fine.

It isn't healthy for us to be together romantically, but I want to maintain some kind of friendship with him because we have a child together and he's a good friend. Hearing you and Sam talk about how you handled the breakup and how you both respected one another's feelings, it's inspiring to me. I hope to have a good outcome like you did. We have so many memories together, like you and Sam did, and the thought of losing the person I made those memories with all together is what hurts the most. I lived with my boyfriend and his ex wife and it was hard at times but I'm so glad we did it. I absolutely love her and her entire family loves me.

I'm really good friends with my 3 ex-boyfriends (and am in my 4th relationship now), and yeah everybody asks me just how in hell is it possible. I think the main part is really clarifying everyone's feelings so nobody's confused or hurt, so as long as there is no kind of grudge and everyone knows how things will work, then it should be fine, it's not easy sometimes but it's way better than just avoiding any interaction forever
I'll never understand throwing someone out into the streets & being petty. Unless that person actually does something horrible, dont be that salty. Also curious if Sams ex watches you guys. Petty ones usually do🤔😂

I dated my best friend and I was in the same situation that you, I was afraid to lose my best friend, but I knew it wasn't gotta last, we broke up but we stayed friends for 3 years, one day I saw him walking down the street with his best friend, we talk and I was interested in his friend but I couldn't do anything about it, after that he told me that I should date him because he is perfect for me and he said the same thing to his friend, we were awkward about it so it took me 6 months to talk to his best friend for the fist time, and now we are in a relationship (3 years now), they are still best friend and we still talk to each other (sorry for my bad English, I'm from Argentina xD)

So relatable, Sam! I have a Science degree and couldn't even get the job you have. Went back and studied to become a teacher. Am now slowly travelling the state taking temporary contracts in the hopes that one day I get a permanent job in a place I can handle living in (somewhere that isn't Sydney or remote like Broken Hill).

I live with my ex boyfriend too. I was heavily suicidal before he left me, and when he broke up with me I promised myself that I wouldn't kill myself because I didn't want him to feel responsible. Unfortunately, I got into a huge fight with my Dad and sister a few days later, and it pushed me over the edge. I messaged him saying thank you for showing me what it feels like to be loved, and please forgive me for what I'm about to do. This isn't because of you. I very naively thought that he didn't care about me anymore, even though he swore we would still be friends. He came rushing over and he took me to the hospital. He visited me every day, and he insisted that I come live with him. I'm unable to work because of health issues, and he knew that if I had gone back to living with my Mom, I wouldn't have had a chance. I have been here for two months and things are actually pretty great. We have learned how to back track and be best friends again, and I'm going to therapy and trying to get on disability. People keep saying all these negative things about how I shouldn't be here because he broke up with me, but he actually insisted. Every time I start to have my doubts and feel like I'm a burden, he reassures me that he doesn't want me to go back there and that I'm not a burden. He puts up with my panic attacks, comforts me, tells me that my feelings are valid, and he helps me when I collapse or I'm unable to get myself food or something because of my syncope. I've never felt this at home in my life! I don't understand why people think its so weird or awkward to live with your ex. Not all exes are terrible! If he ever did tell me to get out for whatever reason, yeah I would be upset, but I still wouldn't have any hard feelings. I'm still alive and trying to fight because of him. I'm glad that you and your ex are so close too. Its really nice to see that. I don't think I could handle it of he dated someone else though. At least not yet. Things are still too raw for that. Maybe some day I could be okay with it? I wouldn't try to stop him from moving on anyway. That would be selfish.

I had 4 serious relationships and 2 attempted relationships before my husband. My first boyfriend (who happens to looks a LOT like Sam) was my best guy friend for a couple years before we dated, we dated for a year, we broke up, had an awkward week, and then went back to being best friends for the remainder of high school. I was completely open to and wanting to continue to be friends after graduation, but he drifted away. #2 was another friend from high school who I dated the summer after graduation. He turned out to be bat sh!t crazy in a scary way, so no, I do not talk to him. #3... I was in a very low place, and I needed someone who was positive and high energy to bring me back up. Unfortunately positive and high energy came in the form of a 23 year old man who still let his mother cut up his food for him at meal time... I was 19 and by far the more mature one. Shortest relationship of my life. He did the make all his friends think he's going to kill himself stunt when we broke up and hid in the woods with his phone turned off. My mom routinely refers to #2 as "Freak Boy," but when she says that, I think of #3 😅 #4 I was with for 3 years, and half of that time we were engaged. It became clear, though, that we were maturing at different speeds and were ready for different life stages, so we broke up. We're still friends, and we still talk. He even asks me for relationship advice. Attempted relationship #1 is a good friend, and we still talk. Attempted relationship #2 was a good friend when we were in uni together, but career paths took us different places, and he ended up with a jealous girlfriend who stopped the communication. Oh well! I'm now married to the love of my life. I met him a couple weeks after attempt #2's second and final date, actually. We met the last weekend of October 2013, and went on our first date November 2, 2013. Now we're married, and our little girl turns 1 on Thursday

I completely agree with all of this! Why does a break up always have to be messy and full of drama? Of course I understad if the other person hurt you, then it's a different story. My first boyfriend and I broke up after three years of dating when the relationship started to go to a really bad direction and I was really scared to do the talk. Eventually we talked about everything, why things weren't working and what we should do and ended up breaking up while remaining good friends, afterall we've been through so much shit together that we are still trying to process.
For some reason all my partners have hated him just because he is my ex. No other reason. It makes me really sad that either I need to hide the fact that he's my ex or I just don't mention him at all to my partners, either way feels like doing something behind their back. So what you guys have is really amazing and I love how understanding and sympathetic you can be for each other. I hope all the best for you
