As a young man who is gay, Shirley and the Westboro Baptist Church used to really offend me. Not only was I severely bullied in school for being gay, but I had to deal with WBC’s hateful protests against homosexuals, too. I’m 23 now and getting bullied only made me STRONGER in the end. As for the WBC, I don’t entertain what they have to say anymore. God made me like this and I’m proud of the loving, compassionate person I’ve become. I’m also friends with Zach Phelps Roper, a former member of this cult and the son of Shirley, and he’s a wonderful guy. He told me so much about how his mom Shirley was VERY abusive, controlling, manipulative, and made his life miserable. He couldn’t take it anymore and had to leave. I commend him for that!

How are you defining love, though? There are like 7 or 9 different words that mean love used in the Bible. I do not believe that the love God has for the unbeliever is the same love he has for the believer, and that is why the "us" and "our" are so important in 1 John 4:10. Christ, in John 15:9, says: If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. If Christ's feelings for all were equal, I believe all would be saved, but instead, He put his affections on some and those he saves. The rest he loves as any creator loves his creation, but not with the same love as the ones he made his sons and daughters.

I’m also friends with Zach Phelps Roper, a former member of this cult and the son of Shirley, and he’s a wonderful guy. He told me so much about how his mom Shirley was VERY abusive, controlling, manipulative, and made his life miserable. He couldn’t take it anymore and had to leave. I commend him for that!

To those who’ve seen the TED-talk or the “kids meet” with one of the Westboro daughters who left the church, you will know that simply telling people off because of their beliefs, being aggressive and verbally abusive does not help them OR us. In fact, the them-us narrative itself is probably the most harmful thing. So to all of you who are unwilling to engage in conversation with people of different beliefs, please understand the polarisation you’re actively taking part in. Debate others. Ask questions. Listen, make room, and point out discrepancies based on your education, not your emotion. We need to learn and understand that everyone believes they’re doing the best thing, we all believe we hold the highest morality. But if you just listen, people may feel heard, and maybe feeling heard and listened to, will create the space for them to listen to you as well. Spread love and patience, rather than distance and hate.
So it's God's work when a gay soldier dies or someone is killed in a tsunami. Ok. Is it also God's work when a good person dies? Does that mean that everything that happens is God's work? Does that then mean that, if God willed it to be, then it was not the individual's choice? A murderer in this strain of logic is simply doing God's work.
