meh, i think it is quite disgusting to make people believe in a fictive figure that gifts people gifts and even worse if they make them believe that happens everywhere instead of giving it some actual symbolical meaning, but that might be just me
Luna Limi No. The child can understand that if you tell them what it says. Love is the one thing a child can definitely understand, and before they are taught one way or another is right or wrong, they have the purest human understanding that love is always good. As the Doctor said, "hate is always foolish, and love is always wise." Also there is nothing inflammatory about equality. Who is hurt by a lack of persecution?
JackHad Room don’t take kids to protests. Don’t lie to them to make them a feminist or something else. Let them enjoy their childhood and let them be themselves.
Her grandfather was the founder of Westboro Baptist, and her mother is the face of it. The extreme courage it took Megan to leave that disgusting place is crazy. The bravery of Megan is so astounding, and her open-mindedness is beautiful. ~~~~~~ EDIT: hi reader! 2020 Me here, coming back to visit this comment that 2018 Me published. If you're about to read the replies, please heed caution, as some of them are very rude and ignorant. Some people do not realize that a person leaving all they know behind to stand up for what's right and to pursue a more loving, open, and intelligent life path, at the expense of losing all of their family, friends, and possibly causing harm to themselves if people from their past want revenge, truly is a form of bravery. 2020 Me still agrees with 2018 Me on this specific lesson--- that people CAN change, but admitting you were taught/believed wrongly, and abandoning your old life is difficult , yet doing it makes you not only brave, but also humble. Have a good day :)
Idk if it's brave. You aren't a hero if you disagree with your parent's fucked up beliefs, that just makes you decent. Talking on a stage about anything is more brave then that.
@@CJM-rg5rt She gave up almost her entire family, challenged beliefs instilled upon her from birth. Yes what she did makes her decent, but the majority of people wouldn't have done the same. She adapted beautifully and if you can't see that and how incredible it is, then I'm sorry but idk what else to say other than the fact I hope you have a lovely day :)
@@CJM-rg5rt I think it's brave to turn on everything you grew up with. I mean, I think it's brave to be a proud member of WBC because of the hostility you're going to put up with. But I think she is brave for leaving what she knew, just as those who leave a cultish upbringing are brave.
As someone who is both gay and a veteran, I HATED this woman with a passion. However, hearing her here I am so proud of her and thank God that her soul seems to be saved. She has my support and my thanks.
When you are born into an environment of intolerance and hatred, it is very hard to muster the courage to become tolerant and love. I applaud you for your courage...and am glad you survived childhood abuse.
I hope she can reach more people. Cults are extremely insular and the members are the very last ones to realize it's a cult. Cults form naturally and even leaders are deceived. She's right, don't assume bad intent, but use critical thinking mixed with empathy and compassion. We all need it.
Thing is, I feel like an apology would and does go miles towards undoing it. Saying you were wrong and asking forgiveness is one of the most Biblical things you can do.
Bruce Wayne If you want to change, you must do more than apologize. Go out and initiate change for the better. Saying sorry is a good start, but you must take action for change to take place.
Honestly, considering just how brainwashed she would have been growing up in that cult, she's shown a remarkable level of personal growth and education. I can't be mad at that, when so many people refuse to change and see people as people first. Good on her for ditching that garbage, and opening her eyes.
Steph Y she went to a school with kids not from the westboro baptist church, a public school if I'm not mistaken (just like all of the other kids from the church/cult). She then went to college and law school - most of the members of the westboro baptist church who are adults are lawyers, too. They aren't COMPLETELY cut off from the rest of the world like most cults.
OnceUponAPiano that doesn't mean that she still had the kind of exposure social media has given her. Local communities and schools are still very isolated compared to the exposure to the global community. Especially when your talking about 10 to 15 years ago
If you see her in this interview 10 years ago it is hard not to get tears in your eyes seeing her TED talk. th-cam.com/video/fhxMV1ntEUQ/w-d-xo.html she is kind of a hero

I remember watching Louis Theroux's documentary on the westboro' church and remember him talking to this girl, and thinking "she's not going to be there forever". Good on her
Do you know where I can watch that? Is it on netflix? I need to watch some Louis Theroux for my phycology class, so I'd like to watch that one, and any others people may recommend, thanks
It's really sad that people are giving her hate. It's not really her fault at all that she was made to protest and hold those awful signs. From the moment she was born, she was "brainwashed" into thinking those things. I'm happy she has realized that and has started over.
If you believe, you are at fault. You can excuse kids that need to trust their parents for being brainwashed. You can't do that to an adult that can even read, speak and write. She failed to think for herself, she was at fault.
of as human shields or carriers of weapons in war. sad that this happens. groups use children as their shields and will also use children to carry bombs to destroy their enemies. i am 61 years old and i have never been in any branch of the military, but i can tell you that my heart broke and breaks for the veterans of the vietnam war. think about this after WW2 the soldiers came home to parades and celebrations. what did the vietnam vet come home to? being spit on and rejection. that is horrible on the part of those who did that to them. those men did not ask to go over there. remember the draft was in affect then. not everyone could run off to canada. getting back to the children part. i have never in my life been in that situation. but if you know that your enemy is using children and civilians to kill you im sure that it would make you skittish. do you know what its like to be shot at everyday in a land that is not your own from an enemy that you cannot always identify? if you have not been there you have no right to judge. like they say walk a mile in my shoes.
@@erwanne1305 if you listen to her interview with Tyra Banks a long time ago you can hear it in her voice how she used to talk just like her mom in that condescending tone (maybe not “angry” per se but definitely condescending).
So, ironically, a voice of calm reason, understanding and acceptance comes from an ex-member of an infamous hate group. I can't applaud her enough. To not only accept her own mistakes, but also the flaws in the belief system of her own flesh and blood, the very people who brought her into the world, must have been incredibly hard. Like she said, we inherently view our own outlook as the "right" one and it takes massive guts to admit that it isn't - in part or in whole. Can't have anything else other than massive respect for her.
I really admire Megan for getting out of this cult. She didn't know any better and it's borderline abuse to force a child to spread hateful rhetoric that they can't even comprehend or question. It must be extremely difficult for Megan though because that's still her family, despite their twisted viewpoints, and she has had to leave them behind.
Megan has achieved what so many of us long to achieve: patience. Her willingness to listen to others so entirely against what she was always taught is both extremely rare and admirable.
This is one of the beste, and most inspiring TEDtalks I've watched. So much to learn, especially in these times today! What she has learned is what we all need to learn, and teach eachother. We all have opinions, we are 7 billion minds, 7 billion perspective and views of the world and life. This video made my day!
I for one, know that I have to want patience and kindness and respect MORE than I want to lash out, be rude and hurtful to (supposedly) faceless people on social media. Even the ones that I truly think are bordering evil. She reminds me that every day *I* have a choice of how I'm going to use the 16 waking hours that I am granted. Thank you Megan for reminding me of that.
I’m not sure if she has, but if you watch interviews with Shirley following Megan’s departure she seems depressed. She’s “lost” at least 4/11 children now.
In Louis Therox's latest documentary about this church made me think that her mum was missing Megan and also was starting to doubt the ideas of the church, especially the misogyny
You’re forgiven by this Veteran and I also wanted to tell you that YOU are an amazing person Megan and it takes a brave individual to 1. Notice your surroundings are toxic 2. Leave the people you love because they are toxic to you. Congratulations and thank you for sharing this important story and lesson.
Michael Umphlettee Why are they against Soldiers? I understand being gay is controversial in religion but being a solider is honorable. I don’t understand...
i really don’t understand people who can’t forgive her. imagine being raised in that type of environment. all you’ve ever known from the moment you were born is to hate. imagine having no control over that and letting your parents shape you with their beliefs and not allowing you to form your own. the fact that she was even able to leave is astonishing to me. i know for a fact that i would not be able to muster up the strength to leave my family no matter what, but she did. and that speaks volumes about her character. “we are all a product of our upbringing and our beliefs reflect our experiences”
I think a reason why it's easier is because we saw that Megan was not a member of the church. She clearly wasn't a part of their way of thinking, despite clearly trying to be. She was having blatant doubts and those doubts were easy to bring out and cultivate into something good.
They don’t forgive her because she probably made them feel like nothing and it hurts to see someone that hurt you being praised and accepted when they didn’t accept you
That's probably very true, but hopefully people will see that part of the essence of humanity is that people's characters can evolve, and while it doesn't excuse the things they did in the past, it means we can look forward to the future and help them undo the harm they did.
I personally "forgive" her but I also understand why some people don't. Even then not forgiving someone doesn't mean that you hate them, you can never forgive someone for who they were/did while accepting who they have become/what they do now. Despite the touted ideaology that "forgiveness=closure/forgive them for yourself/forgiveness is part of redemption/whatever" it is completely okay to be angry/never forgive. And, as I said above, unforgiveness and acceptence are not mutually exclusive.
When you politely tell people to make an argument vs. name calling and slogan chanting you plant a seed. Sometimes a seed grows into something useful. When you are asked to make the argument, you have a chance to learn.
@@mikeyslakowski1299 Ha! I wish that was what it was. Remember the everyone's racist but not racist phase people went through. Where you could be racist but not at the same time?

I can’t explain how I felt when your church walked on the flag that my friends had on their coffins. Thank you for saying this. I forgive you. I will try to be more compassionate to people, like you, who are brought up in bad situations and show them love and respect.

Blake Askew, She wasn't wrong. She was a pawn in the context. We don't get to pick are parents or how they raised us. But we do get to pick how we lead our own lives.
This takes courage. To wrongfully condemn your fellow human being in such horrible, public ways. Then whole-heartedly apologize to the world, stand on stage, and admit how wrong you were, and THEN teach love and encouragement. She has turned into an inspiring woman. Cheers, Megan. ♥️
I’m so proud of her. No condescension intended- but this takes so much courage. She left the cult that raised her. She’s been ostracized by her family. You can hear in her voice how much her heart has changed.
Of course she is, she was raised communicating to the community and public speaking, it was just horrible, hateful things she was saying. I’m glad she’s speaking about positive, accepting things now.
I find it so admirable whenever I see a person that has left a cult or an abusive organization just by her own will and resources. Says a lot about that person's willpower and natural common sense. They really need to be heard, and appreciated.
Eliot FM well said so we should question ourselves how we do speak then .... unless his her original church who sculpted that kind of voice .. as they were not trained to protest ? Investigation with remaining members could give us an answer ??
Yeah it’s so different and more at peace than it was when she was on the Tyra banks show it was very tense and worked up it seemed so angry and bothered
This is so impactful for me to see. I became borderline obsessed with watching videos on TH-cam about the WBC in 2011 while I was in college, trying to figure out if and how I could come out to my own family who is also religiously extreme, but not quite to this degree. It was a strange sort of experience to see her and her family behaving as they did and I noticed similarities to the society in which I lived. This odd sort of mirror helped me shape my thoughts around the ways in which I and those around me were falling desperately short. I could see how bad the WBC was very clearly, and all the similarities I noticed in my own faith and society weighed heavily on me. Eventually I got too stressed out watching the videos and stopped completely. But I had learned a lot from them. I ended up leaving behind my own faith and coming out shortly after. I was cut off financially and had to leave college to survive and support myself. Now, all this time later, I find this video by happenstance, on TH-cam once again, as I’m returning to college to finish the degree that I couldn’t finish before. I came out around the same time that she left the WBC and had no idea until now that we were on strangely similar paths away from harmful upbringings. I remember her specifically from so many interviews and ad videos and news stories. I remember her as this strange, horrific mirror, and as a villain in my own story. I even witnessed the WBC first-hand once at a pride event in Chicago and recognized some of the protesters from the videos I’d seen. I wondered if she was among them. It was otherworldly and strange to process-the feeling of this hellish group becoming something real and not just a bizarre spectacle on the other side of a screen. It is odd to reflect now on how learning about this church and seeing them in action had affects on me that ended up being positive by pushing me further away from the likes of it. This is the first I’ve seen of her since the days of me researching the WBC to death all that time ago, and I am so proud and inspired to know that she has come so far in the same span of time as me. It feels like another mirror, a very beautiful moment of reflection for me, to see how much the world and people within it can change for the better in a short span of time, and to think that someone who I remember so vividly in a specific light can be so transformed before my eyes. I hope she sees this and knows that for whatever harm she’s done, this video gives me so much hope, and I am proud of her for all the hardships she has gone through in pursuit of putting things right. On top of all that, she danced several very thin lines here very gracefully, and that’s not commonly done. So well-done there, too! I’m glad I got to have this full-circle moment. I think it’s had a positive impact on me yet again by helping to restore my optimism and hope.
Funny at 65 years old I rarely wish to have someone else's qualities anymore. But I sure wish to have more of the grace and strength of this young woman. Her beauty of spirit and her strength really shine and I can feel the love. She gives me some small measure of hope for our world in these dark days.
I wonder how many gay pride events I attended which you were part of. This isn't meant to be painful but I have to tell you. It's because of Westburro that I choose to make my veteran partner's funeral private and not published because I feared the church would show up. But, thank you for opening your heart ❤
I'm sure many or all of the people in that angry and dismissive place are like her but still don't know it and some die before they have a chance to find out.
It's easy to imagine. Every suicide car bomber is a human being!!! That child or teenager had to be born, raised to believe it was the most special thing on this earth and died blowing it self up thinking god is great. Hitchens was right, GOD is NOT great and religion poisons EVERYTHING
I'm not going to get into any argument over religion or God or anything like that, only that yes, while a suicide bomber does that thinking "god is great" that does not mean religion itself is fundamentally bad. fanaticism of any kind from any source is inherently bad and will only lead to suffering. One believing, whether it's true or not, in a higher power is their choice and not yours, but using that belief to harm someone or cause suffering because you believe it's "right" is not acceptable. @Ekko Echo
+Ekko Echo The Nazis performed horrible medical procedures on captured Jews during the holocaust. By your reasoning, Medicine poisons everything 🙄 You can't fight ignorance with more ignorance. An eye for an eye, and soon we'll all be blind.
+Amber Slahlize Yes, but how you treat other people like they do based on things like sexuality, music choices, being a veteran/soldier, etc. are all things that they have harassed and tormented others about. They might not be angry all the time, but they're unnecessarily angry where they don't need to be, specifically when it matters, like the funerals of military men and women. Their anger overrides their "kindness".
Her voice kinda reminds me of my ex. My ex's voice was the most calming beautiful things ever to me. She could literally talk about the most boring thing... and it was so calming. I miss that
I was *VERY* surprised when Megan left because, when she was a member of the Westboro Baptist Church, she was one of the most devoted, passionate, outspoken, and incredibly dedicated members. She was actually the church's planner, arranged all their pickets, and ran their website. Most of all, she was extremely hateful, prejudice, and acted just as evil as her mother Shirley. I’m a gay guy and at once felt so hurt by their malicious words. It's a miracle she changed and turned her life around. The things she did were very hurtful and cruel, but I'm glad she apologized and changed. ❤️
She seems intelligent; therefore it was only a matter of exposure to the truth. She wasn't brainwashed, she was raised in a community of hate and ignorance. The exact opposite of everything Jesus taught.
It is effortless to be the most devoted member when all you know is your family; closed from the rest of the world. She was a victim, not a participant.
@BTIsaac No. You haven't read the bible. So stop telling religious folks what their bible says when you have no nuance and are a Johnny come lately to the topic.
I was honestly shocked when Megan left the WBC because in all the footage I saw of her, she came across as a loyalist through and through. When she left, it almost convinced me to believe in miracles again.
@@martinkent333 I see your point, but remember that this woman was born into that church and was completely brainwashed into thinking the way that they do. I spent years hating this woman. I saw her as someone who contributed to the anti-gay rhetoric that was so prevalent when I was growing up a scared and closeted teenager. @@galactic_socialist what? I think you mean that she has the smooth/sweet speaking style common among new agey cult leaders, but that's only because she's trying to polish her speaking style. It's not a relic of her time in the cult, because her cult talked exactly the opposite.
Me neither. I'm a pro-life activist on Twitter and I get insulted and demonized on a daily basis by radical pro-choice people who disagree with me. If you don't want an abortion, don't get one! That's super cool if you don't want one. But mind your own business and worry about yourself. I agree after a certain trimester it's too late for an abortion but if it's early enough it shouldn't be yours to dictate :/ there's a difference between trying to understand the westborrow church people and someone telling me and restricting my rights and reproductive rights as a women. As you might know having someone tell you what you can do with your body is really terrible ): treat people the way you want to be treated. Just keep in mind that it's really rude to tell what others should believe. Keep it to yourself.

@@timetoreason181 This extends beyond theology; political divide has become the new religion - this video is my gateway share to friends and family who are so entrenched in their tribal beliefs that they've stopped listening to other people - it extends WAY beyond traditional and cult-like religion, it extends to actual thought itself, to tribal thinking, and as she mentioned most relevant today, political discourse. It's all just ideology and dogma in its extreme, no matter what side you're on. If you're not humanising or listening to the other side, or worse being emboldened in your own position every interaction you have, it's a symptom of a sickness, of the bigger truth you can't see yet - that you're not listening.

I beg to differ that there is "nothing new here" and it's quite demeaning of you to say that about this extremely articulate, intelligent, brave, young woman who has no political agenda
Wow, I came here to hear some dirt on the Westboro Baptist Church but got something else entirely--something probably more valuable and useful. I really liked everything you had to say about argument and compromise, and taking time to understand the other person. I think that's something everyone in this world needs to learn (including myself), and if we want to talk about the United States specifically, what you said needs to happen on both sides of the liberal/conservative spectrum and everywhere in between.

To have been brought up in such a toxic atmosphere but end up showing such humanity and removing all hatred fro her. To be able to move forward like this is quite remarkable. And she's right, dialogue is the only way we can move forward.
The first time I heard about Westboro Baptist church was in my Animal Science class in Roseburg high school. The teachers had been in tears in every half full class that day. On October 1,we had a mass shooting at our local UCC college. My teacher in tears asked us to come protest this church that said they were coming to the victim's funerals to hold their hateful signs. I was so shocked that there were people like that.
Michael Nelson not everything is religion, and we can't blame every problem society has on them. We are not religious folks. We are not brainwashed. We know where to draw the lines. Unlike them, I know better than to blame everything on a small minority (I'm talking about how they blame every problem society has on homosexual BTW, I listened to a preach before. Some of the things they said are utterly stupid.) And I am fully aware that people decision to let religion decides for them is a choice. That's the exact reason I look down upon them. I don't see them as normal humans. I see them as puppets, dancing to religion's control.
Fan XD Square Enix the thing is, most religious people focus more on religion as a sort of political thing instead of having a relationship with God. I never thought I'd feel ashamed to be religious.
Assuming her mom is “crazy” or “dumb” without considering her perspective based on her own upbringing really shows you missed the entire point of this video... rather than putting the other side down we should be starting conversations and trying to understand that each has good intentions, even if they are misguided.
God bless you and your message. You are a wonderful young woman who shows a great intelligence. I am a 63 year old man who is proud of you for fighting to learn to love and understand others. Keep loving all and forgiving those who can't that's how you were saved.
A baby in a small community only know what they get taught. Westboro was the ultimate mental prison. Glad this young lady got technology and grew up and out. Well done Ms Phelps. Just saw end of title. Congrats on marriage.
Wow, I love this. One of the best things I’ve seen in a long time, and even though this was years ago it’s something I think people could benefit from now more than ever. Side note: The Westboro Church came and protested my theater group in high school because we performed Rent as our musical. I was a senior and I’ll never forget the signs they held up, so hateful and mean. They weren’t allowed on property so they had to stay across the street. We stayed on our end and sang “Seasons of Love” to them instead of yelling back. ❤️
I'm atheist, but I would if invited(realistically), I have no problem listening to peoples thoughts and opinions even if those same thoughts and opinions are hateful and extreme.
Twenty Paphonies Christian??? What does that mean. Yahshua was never a self proclaimed Christian he was the Son Of God. No such thing as being a Christian exist in Hebrew scriptures. The Messiah is for all God's children.. not to be LABELED a group.
It seems to me that her husband played a large role in pulling her from the darkness, what a lucky guy to have had the opportunity to forge such a meaningful relationship with a woman like that.
Sharrel Wright Do I? I don't feel like one, but maybe you're right. I was just appreciating the bond that they would have formed by going through whatever they went through.. and as a man, I empathized most with how lucky he would be.
Well done! Well done!!! God bless you! Keep on speaking out! I'm a 65 yr old Christian, also raised in a similar way. My oldest daughter is gay, and has been for over 30 years. God's love is what I need to show her until the day I die. You are so right! Well done! I would be proud to have a daughter with a heart like yours. You are precious!
I always hated Westboro Baptist church but I think this woman is their greatest achievement. So wonderful seeing she got out of that hatred and now making real difference in the world.
EMS 76 it can be extremely hard to leave a cult like the Westboro Baptist church because of how often they block out people who aren't like them, so I'd think of it as a achievement and the right thing to do, but whatever ◠‿◠
Jim Johnson that an expression? Someone said she decided to be a good person. Thing is, she always has been. Being a good person was her biggest motivation in life. Probably why people were able to get through to her in the first place. She just realised what the church was doing _wasn’t_ a good thing for the world.
I can't speak for Miraweyna, but if you have to ask, you forgot or never learned large parts of history... or maybe you just slept through it all? SIMPLE things: Salem. The H bomb. WWI and WWII. EVEN MR KIM thinks hes doing good, while his people starve and he has all the luxurious things. Most terrorists BELIEVE they are acting for the good. This is an amazing woman. This message is so important and doesn't only apply to her situation. We live in a country where people are so ready to stand up for their side, we scream at each other and accuse those who have differing beliefs of being ignorant and just plain wrong. We need to start listening to each other, we need to listen to why it is people believe in what they believe in, support what they support. Right now we all just stay in an echo chamber that supports our own beliefs, when we should really be listening to all sides to help better understand one another. We can change minds, we can create change, we can better the world if we could just go outside our comfort zone with an open mind. I wish everyone could listen to this woman and apply what she has learned about the world to our own world. She is brilliant.
The problem is that religion is based on blind faith with no actual evidence to support their claims. It's the reason why they say it's taboo to question it, because they know it'll undermine their foundation. Questioning was also a reason why older religions went extinct to the realm of mythology. The idea has to at least be realistically plausible for it to be taken seriously.
Bob dabiuld; The "proof" only seems to come from that book you're trying to prove in the first place. The Bible was written during a time when there was little to no real understanding of how things worked. Anything they didn't understand would almost automatically be pinned on supernatural forces, most of the time not even bothering to look any further into it. Let me put it this way: If you weren't raised under religious doctrine, weren't religious, and you were to read the Old and New Testaments, along with the epic of Gilgamesh, The Iliad and Odyssey, and any other old-world stories and myths, for what reason would you believe that any of the stories happened exactly the way the books say they did or that they even happened at all?
Bob dabiuld; I will agree to the possibility that "A" Jesus existed. There is still no reason to believe that this man had divine magical abilities, that he was really born of a "virgin", or even that she and his followers actually saw him after watching their son/idol suffer a horrific execution, and certainly not any incarnation of any god.
Megan's content and delivery were impressive. To come from all the negative indoctrinations of Westboro and become compassionate, tolerant, and open-minded is truly a miracle. Hopefully, the rest of the family will see the Light.
I'm so proud of her. The hardest part of arguments will always be admitting you were wrong. The fact she allowed herself to grow and change and start spreading love instead of hate is incredible. She is a great example of being the change you want to see in the world.
“I thought my rightness justified my rudeness” I really love that phrase in her talk, definitely makes me think of how many times I may have been rude or short with people because I thought/believed I was right about something and really makes me want to improve how I communicate to others.
Likewise, listening to her talk made me think about how I've responded to people who disagree with me on social media, I am going to change how I respond from here on out.
She left a cult. That takes an amazing amount of emotional willpower. I would like to think I would make the same decisions as her, had I been born into a similar situation, but who knows?
Westboro handled things wrong, no doubt, but Meagan’s reformation doesn’t change the word of God in the Christian bible, those choosing to continually lead a gay lifestyle cannot be saved.
Giving a five year old an inflammatory sign they can't read/ understand is sickening.

Luna Limi No. The child can understand that if you tell them what it says. Love is the one thing a child can definitely understand, and before they are taught one way or another is right or wrong, they have the purest human understanding that love is always good. Also there is nothing inflammatory about equality. Who is hurt by a lack of persecution?
It should be deemed child abuse

EDIT: hi reader!

If you want to change, you must do more than apologize. Go out and initiate change for the better. Saying sorry is a good start, but you must take action for change to take place.

“we are all a product of our upbringing and our beliefs reflect our experiences”
Most of the comments say that they do forgive her and respect her.
The fact that she can say she was wrong , speaks volumes about her Courage and character

She speaks with such a soothing and calming voice that only a person who has found peace of mind would do. Very Inspiring
Eliot FM well said so we should question ourselves how we do speak then .... unless his her original church who sculpted that kind of voice .. as they were not trained to protest ? Investigation with remaining members could give us an answer ??

This is very old, but I just wanted to say this was a lovely comment.
"The good news is that it's simple. The bad news is that it's hard." Perfect observation.
Funny at 65 years old I rarely wish to have someone else's qualities anymore. But I sure wish to have more of the grace and strength of this young woman. @@napalm5 I think the misspelling is intentional.
You did what you had to do to protect your family. Nothing wrong with that.
Hard to imagine such a soft spoken and humble person can come from such an angry and dismissive place. Good on her.

You can't fight ignorance with more ignorance.

Aaron Ellis I must say, Hopefully you got a better, or at least not a bad outcome of the breakup. Do you mind if I ask, how's life?
I was *VERY* surprised when Megan left because, when she was a member of the Westboro Baptist Church, she was one of the most devoted, passionate, outspoken, and incredibly dedicated members. She was actually the church's planner, arranged all their pickets, and ran their website. Most of all, she was extremely hateful, prejudice, and acted just as evil as her mother Shirley. I’m a gay guy and at once felt so hurt by their malicious words. It's a miracle she changed and turned her life around. The things she did were very hurtful and cruel, but I'm glad she apologized and changed. ❤️
The Greek Pianist me too. I think a lot of it was because she was brainwashed and didn’t know any better.
@BTIsaac Don't be stupid. That wasn't Christianity. I can assume all liberals are communists that desire mass murder to achieve their goals.

I spent years hating this woman. I saw her as someone who contributed to the anti-gay rhetoric that was so prevalent when I was growing up a scared and closeted teenager.
But when I found out she had left, I just couldn’t hate her anymore. Yes, she’s responsible for her own actions, but she was also a product of her upbringing. To get out of that situation and be disowned by her family....that’s something a lot of lgbt people can relate to.
I’m proud of her. She owns her mistakes and acknowledges the pain she caused. You can see her genuine regret. She is a good person who was brainwashed into doing bad things. I am so happy to see she has moved on with her life, and I hope she eventually is reunited with her family.
Can you see her genuine regret? Or do you think shes just making a living doing an apology tour. It could he possible that she knew from day 1 she was full of crap, and just being an opportunist now.

Me neither. I'm a pro-life activist on Twitter and I get insulted and demonized on a daily basis by radical pro-choice people who disagree with me. I wish all those people were like this woman: open-minded, non-judgemental and willing to just listen to me. Gaby Champion lets not get carried away though. I'm not going to let anyone tell me what I can do with my body...sorry it's just disrespectful to dictate what what women can do. Not everyone has your religion it's not fair. I understand you might feel bad with people being mean but some people are tired of having people saying what we can do with our own bodies.

Yes absolutely, and is universal truth about cults based on mythical, evil, fictional books like the Bible

A K the only people being misguided are the people in the Westboro Baptist Church. They are not wrong. Being smart isn’t just about being able to solve math or read and understand things. It’s about learning to understand people and do what’s right and make your own decision. And the hate in all of the people of that church’s heart makes them very unattractive and ugly on the inside.

Some of the things they said are utterly stupid.)
And I am fully aware that people decision to let religion decides for them is a choice.

The problem is that they also believe god hates everyone
@@ShuffleUpandDeal32 I think they believed god hated lgbtq+ and death was a punishment from god maybe me saying everyone was a over statement
@@ShuffleUpandDeal32 I think everything is missing in their Bibles except for Leviticus.
@@ShuffleUpandDeal32 I'll tell you what page isn't missing from my Bible. 1 cor 6:9 Homosexuals will not reach heaven.
Hold up.....twitter did something good?
That probably happened before you could block people or the mass banning of people with the "wrong" opinion
I know right...
Almost as if it's not as bad as a platform as you think but oh no.

"We are all a product of our upbringing." So true.
Indeed. For better or for worse.
You seriously believe we grew from a monkey?
Her voice is so soothing 😭❤️
Fiji Desso Agreed. She uses hers for good, but the rest of her family just wants to yell and hate people.
If you see her Tyra bank interview when she was younger her voice wasn’t as soothing just full of hate
I agree! Like how does she speak so softly yet so powerfully at the same time?
Mind To Musxcle Jamila Higgs That's probably why she speaks softly now. She spent so many years yelling that now she wants to talk instead.
When she isn't acting like a wackjob.
Damage was done, yes, but her eyes are open now, and there’s no reason to hold animosity towards her. She’s on our team now.
How is life going for you?
Anyone else find it ironic that the only ones who found Jesus are the ones who left the church?
Not the church because all true believers are The Church of Christ, but i know what your saying
It’s not ironic it’s to be expected because Lord Jesus Christ is love and he didn’t teach us to condemn anyone but to love our neighbour.
I feel that
She's atheist now
@@ObiWann90 I mean more in the "she found the light" type of way. Idk if Jesus was a real dude and if the miracles he did were real or not but you gotta admit, he had some good ideas
Her speech should be mandatory viewing in the U.S. congress. Once a week.
Are you that empty that her blabber made such an impact on you. She sincerely didn’t enlighten me to anything that I wasn’t already blessed with throughout life from family friends and church. Im sorry if you weren’t as fortunate.
The tone of your comment shows how 'blessed' you really are.
Thomas K Oh does it now .... God bless !!
Kurt E. Clothier God Bless !!
@@johnchigur7706 Wow. Holy art thou, much? Not everyone has the luxury of a positive upbringing. Your arrogance is sickening.
Dionette At least Jesus was real 👍 why do you think there isn’t proof that He did what the Bible says he did?
Dionette Can we agree that Jesus existed?
She wasn't wrong. She was a kid. Her parents were wrong. She just broke through the naive shell.
Do you get your kicks from feeling a sense of superiority to people?
Moral of the story: food brings people together.

@William Henderson no, anyone
Same here!
I want to congratulate you for actually getting the point. IMO, yours should be the top comment, not one of the many hyping some Celebrity.
Don't assume, ask questions, stay calm and then make the argument. So simple yet so lacking in our world. Great talk.
She left a cult. That takes an amazing amount of emotional willpower. I would like to think I would make the same decisions as her, had I been born into a similar situation, but who knows?
I HOPE TYRA SEES THIS, she'd be so proud. you're doing great sweetie.
I'm a gay man and was subject to ridicule by the Westboro Baptist Church. Good for you Megan, you seem like a lovely woman.
Plot hole.
David Clinging he didn't go in the Church, he they would harass him at say a pride parade.
Sorry you had to experience that, I can't imagine hun. Blessed be
Westboro handled things wrong, no doubt, but Meagan’s reformation doesn’t change the word of God in the Christian bible, those choosing to continually lead a gay lifestyle cannot be saved.
