SECRETARY BIRD HARASSES JACKAL

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 พ.ค. 2022
  • Not many people can say they have seen a secretary bird and jackal in a stand-off. This was the moment a secretary bird harasses a jackal, whilst both try to intimidate the other - but who is the actual aggressor?
Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: www.latestsigh...
This amazing sighting was tinged near the Kij Kij waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Steve and Bee tell LatestSightings.com about this unforgettable moment:
"We were driving back towards Twee Rivieren Rest camp. The car in front of us had stopped and we could see gemsbok (oryx antelope) and wildebeest lying down. As we drove closer we could see the jackal and the secretary bird standing facing each other. We stopped the car and I immediately started taking pictures."
    Secretary bird harassing jackal
"The jackal seemed to be attacking the bird at first. Lunging with its mouth open, not managing to land any bites though! It then became clear that the secretary bird was in fact the aggressor. The jackal was just defending itself."
"It wouldn’t let the jackal move in any direction, blocking every attempt the jackal made to move away. Circling around the jackal and jumping over it and kicking out at its back."
"At one point the secretary bird landed a thumping blow to the jackal's head. The jackal backed right down and managed to make his escape towards the back of our car. The secretary bird stood and watched. Seemingly satisfied with its victory. Turned and went back to foraging."
"I have never seen anything like this and probably won’t again in my lifetime. It was our first trip to the Kgalagadi and it has been a magical experience. I can’t wait to come back!"

There are many many weird looking animals. Secretary bird is the least of them lol. It gets its name because when they are calm, the feathers fall back and look like pencils in a secretary's ear. Though when the bird is excited or threatened, they fan out to give snakes false targets to strike at. Oh yeah, and these birds hunt snakes. They stomp them to death.

i agree. jackals are sneaky and flying birds have fragile bodies, even raptors like the secretary bird. the jackal was trying to get the secretary bird to drop its guard for a moment so it would instantly go for the neck or head. there's a video of a jackal easily dragging a large stork from a water body.

@@jamesbaxter222 jackals are very sneaky. secretary birds can't just launch themselves into air like a little sparrow. they need to let their guard down to flap their wings and create updraft to take off. all of this can take 2-4 seconds and that's enough for the coy acting jackal to turn on the offense and pounce on the bird. once the jackal takes a bite, the bird is done. the secretary bird knows this and hence keeps itself facing the jackal and making itself appear big.

It's so strange how calm the jackal is acting. It neither ran nor spent much energy chasing the secretary. It just sort of stuck around gave little nips. I bet the secretary could seriously mess that jackal up, too, considering the size difference - does anyone know why it's acting like that?
I can see the jackal is showing some typical signs of canine distress (ears pinned back, etc) but I'm not familiar with jackals so I don't know if this body language is consistent with them as well.

Not sure what's happening here, neither seems to want to eat the other. The bird's nest or eggs will hardly be on the ground, nor the jackal's young pups be there. Maybe their's a nice snack close at hand and neither wants to share.
