Narrow Gauge
A look at some of the highlights from 2023 from railways with a gauge less than 4foot 8 1/2 inches.
We start with a look at the finale to the WHR 100 Gala which saw Lyd and Russell double head from Porthmadog to Caernarfon and return. Next we visit the Vale of Rheidol with No. 8 freshly repainted into BR Black with a set of BR crimson/cream carriages.
A mixture of narrow gauge demonstration freight action, starting off with Mainline Hunslet Blanche on the anti-gravity train on the Ffestiniog Railway, with a gravity train heading back downhill into Tan-y-bwlch. Other goods action includes Vale of Rheidol during the autumn charters, Mixed freights on the Isle of Man Steam Railway & Manx Electric Railway and Statfold Barn Railway.
Visiting the Ffestiniog Railway for the Society AGM Weekend was Arnold Jung Works No. 3175 of 1921 0-4-0WT 'Jenny' from the Richmond Light Railway and Orenstein & Koppel Works No. 5668 of 1912 0-4-0WT No. 6 'Eigiau' from the Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway. Jenny is also seen on her home line at Richmond, were freshly restored Deauville 'Lily' is also seen in action.
Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway action, including Green Goddess on its visit to the Kirless Light Railway.
The Isle of Man Steam Railway celebrated its 150th Anniversary this year, while the Welsh Highland Railway celebrated 100 years since completion of the full route. A trio of operational Double Fairies are again available on the F&WHR following the completion of new build James Spooner.
River Esk visited the Kirkless Light Railway and alongside River Mite is also seen at home on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway.
We also pay visits to the West Lancs Light Railway, Apedale Valley Light Railway, Leighton Buzzard Railway, Groudle Glen Railway and Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (were two Austrian steam loco are seen in operation together).
Diesel and electric action includes Mary Ann on Welsh Highland 'demolition' trains, Manx Electric 130 celebrations and a visit to Lancashire Mining Museum.
Miniature Railway action includes the newly operated Mease Valley Light Railway at Statfold, Littlehampton Miniature Railway and Hastings Miniature Railway.
We close with some Garrett action, Kirklees all available engines 'Shelly-or-bust' run and James Spooner in shilloute across the cob.
