  • The Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds started producing 0-4-0ST steam locomotives for the slate quarries of North Wales in 1870. Over 150 years later the little saddle tanks are still going strong, but rather than shunting slate around quarries are hauling passengers along scenic railways throughout England and Wales, and even further afield.
In this video we see 28 of the Quarry Hunslets in action both on passenger services and demonstration goods trains at the Bala Lake Railway, Beamish, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, Llanberis Lake Railway, National Slate Museum, Statfold Barn Railway, Threlkeld Quarry Railway & Mining Museum and West Lancashire Light Railway.
Preserved locomotives featured are Gwynedd, Winifred, Velinheli, King of the Scarlets, Elidir, Cloister, Lilla, Margaret, Jerry M, Jonathan, George B, Britomart, Holy War, Alice, Maid Marian, Irish Mail, Thomas Bach, Hugh Napier, Una, Sybil Mary, George Sholto, Gertrude, Edward Sholto, Dolbadarn and Michael. We also take a look at three new builds from the modern Hunslet Engine Company at Statfold Barn: Statfold, Jack Lane and currently under construction at Statfold Engineering Juliette.

The cabless quarry Hunslets are my favorite, and Winifred is probably my favorite of them all. The black lined livery with brass dome just looks like a classic and timeless.
Why loads of these were not exported around the world for backyard/garden railways I’ll never know, but they’re about the perfect size loco for it.

@@pilotbug6100 if I were to do a new build loco it would be the one that sadly got away. The Midland Railways Johnson Belpaire 4-4-0 also known as the 3P. Why it wasn’t immediately preserved with the other 4-4-0 after the Hull and Barnsley rail tour like the NER Worsde 4-4-0 is still unbelievably stupid. Both were just as important historically.

Little point of interest, Velinheli has Maid Marian's boiler type, as Maid Marian was the one built with the dome on the tank

Velinheli has just returned to service after the fitting of a new boiler. I can remember seeing him chuff out of the museum building at the LSR in Cornwall 11 years ago

Great video. Would it be worth doing one of these videos for the hunslet austerities as they are plenty

totally. The De-winton's and the Huslets were the powerhouses up in the Quarries moving slate to the cutting sheds on roughly laid track.
