  • Hangzhou 杭州 is one of THE classical cities of China. In this video we will start with a walk around the famous West Lake 西湖, and then get a little more off the beaten path with what turns out to be an epic pagoda mission.
And with this video also comes the end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal...but as one journey ends...another begins!
Check out the pagoda map link below!

(9:25) The plaque says the "six harmonies pagoda" - Six harmonies are the Buddha's prescription for a community (of monks, but can be any community) to live in harmony, peace and free of conflicts. The six guiding principles are: (1)Peaceful and gentle behaviour observed by all the residents (身和共住),(2)Practice tender and harmonious speech, refrain from arguments, quarrels and disputes (口和無諍),(3)Sharing same goal in endeavours and spiritual practices (意和同事),(4)Everyone abides by the same laws, rules of conduct. (戒和同修),(5)Sharing the same understanding and viewpoints, ideologically. (見和同解),(6)sharing equally and fairly the acquired necessities of sustenance between community members (利和同均)。 Sounds a lot like living in a commune. BTW: Buddhism is atheist, rejecting the concept of a Creator God, since the law of nature is Causality (cause and effect). Buddhism is a pretty good fit for a Marxist Socialist country.

杭州🥰 My first China love on my journey from Hong Kong to Beijing for work summer of 1986. One tidbit from that visit is that I remember that you could buy a cup of fresh green tea in a lakeside pavilion. Your choices were normal green tea and special grade green tea. The high quality stuff cost 60 fen if my memory serves me correctly which adjusting for local prices at that time is equivalent to 15 cents ($0.15).

Wow! Your video brings back the memories of my trip to 六合塔15 years ago. You can definitely see, feel and smell the history there. I also remember the plaque hung at the entrance of the tower has the emperor 乾隆 signature on it. Also my understanding is that many of the pagodas on in Chinese costal areas fell victim to Japanese pirates during the Ming dynasty and the wooden structures were burned while the stone center structures remained. I remember I read this at the entrance of 六合塔.

The essence of travel lies in getting away from the bustling and noisy big cities. Your video has excellently captured this. Many of China's cultural treasures are hidden in those lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path spots. Thank you so much for your work. You are a true traveler.

Hi Nick, thanks for showing these pagodas, as i am always interested in ancient architect. I was in HZ early this year with my husband, but I had to give these places a miss as I'd to be sensitive to him in the religious sphere.
