Hey nick, thank you so much for sharing these. As an overseas Chinese and an enjoyer of Chinese history and architecture, it is rare to find videos like these that cover Chinese architecture and the history behind them on the English speaking internet. So I’m really grateful for your videos. If you get the chance to go to shanxi again, can you visit the Foguang temple at wutai (Jin and tang dynasty Buddhist halls), yongle temple (yuan period Taoist temple) as well as the jinci in taiyuan? I’m sorry for the request but I just thought it would be really interesting to see you visit these places. Also, if you get the chance, please check out the fengguo temple at my home-province liaoning, I think you will enjoy the Liao period architecture there too
I really appreciate the requests actually! Shanxi will happen again pretty soon, it is by far the best place in China for ancient architecture. Wutai is a must, i will get there soon!
Very interesting. I intend to watch all your previous video's
I hope you enjoy them! Any questions, just ask!
You know what, you being told to get out is what I expect because Chinese Muslims usually don’t like non-Muslims being in their mosques but for some reason so many foreign non-Muslims on youtube be getting into mosques and FILM with no problems I’m like, how?
I only watched a few videos but must admit its nice channel about china
Thanks a lot! I have a 2 month winter trip about to start so more videos on the way!
As a cyclist rising an easy 50+ miles several times a week, how does this climb compare in fitness?
Oh you would have no problem at all. The heat when i climbed was the biggest difficulty, super hot day. There are restrooms and plenty of places to stop on the way too.
I presume there are restrooms?
Yuan Shangdu (XANADU,Upper Capital) was once a magnificent city and the summer capital of the Yuan Dynasty, symbolizing the blend of nomadic and agrarian cultures. However, after the fall of the Yuan Dynasty in 1368, it became a key target for the Ming army under Zhu Yuanzhang. In 1369, Ming forces destroyed Shangdu to weaken the remaining Mongol influence, turning this once-thriving political and cultural hub into a historical ruin. Today, Shangdu stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reminding us of the glorious past of the Mongol Empire and the cultural exchanges it fostered. A visit to this site is like stepping into the crossroads of history.
top 10 new pagodas please (past 50 years)
I tend to only focus on Chinese ancient history and architecture, but i have visited a few modern pagodas....i will see what I can do.
The wooden pagoda just hits different, what an incredible piece of art. Chinese architecture it's marvelous!
Yeh, it's a true marvel! It might become a bit more touristy now - my friend told me it was in that Monkey King video game 😂😂
Haha, bro, you’ve been visiting quite a lot of pagodas! 😄 The Nine Pinnacle Pagoda's spires resemble those of the Five Pagoda Temple in Hohhot. I live in a sister city of Xi'an. There’s also a small sculpture of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda here. One day, I’ll upload a video to share it with you! In recent years, mortise and tenon structure building blocks have gained some popularity in China, and I happened to pay attention to them as well. In summary, I’d be content if I could visit even a few of the places you’ve been to!
Thank you for compiling your favourite list of pagodas. We have followed and watched you on your trips in search of these pagodas. But is #2 a pagoda?? 🤔🤔 I thought pagodas are tiers one on top of another, reaching high up.
Good question! Chinese Pagodas do tend to be tiered, but some are not. A Pagoda is any kind of a tower used for 'Buddhist purposes' - they could be funerary, or used to house relics etc. So, Tibetan style style Pagodas (stupas) are also pagodas, as is this very old pagoda at number 2!
Book publishers in China should collaborate with Nick to write books about China's pagodas. There is so much to learn through the pagodas. (2:02) This Tang dynasty 九顶塔; Nine Pinnacle Pagoda is the surprise find.
The Nine Pinnacle Pagoda is really unique. Actually, this one, the Lingyan temple pagoda (number 10 on the list) and the 4 door pagoda (number 2 on the list) are all really close to each other. There is some serious history south of Jinan!
@@nickinchina2552 I found a drone shot of the Nine Pinnacle pagoda online. The structure on the top is really special. You need to get a drone.
Great video Nick! I live in Suzhou, actually very close to the Tiger Hill pagoda (10 minutes driving), so am seeing it routinely. I always thought that my daughter is so lucky to be able to brag about it in the future that: "hey, I grew up near the Tiger Hill pagoda, I fed the goldfishes and ducks in there at every weekend with my parents." I've personally been visiting the Ying County Wooden Pagoda a decade ago, it is majestic and I hope it can remain there for another thousand years.
Suzhou is fantastic! As i'm sure you know, Suzhou has a lot of other great pagodas too...but the Tiger Hill Pagoda is really special. Fantastic history!
I love this video too
I relearn Chinese history through Nick's videos
We are learning together as we go!
Yes the wooden pagoda or any ancient wooden structure is always special because most wooden structures have been destroyed over time due to nature or people. People are often the better than nature at destroying things btw😉😉
It is amazing that this building is still standing. A work of art.
Hi Nick. Amazing video. Thank you for sharing 😊
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Plenty more to find!
They are all incredible. I'm so grateful to you for sharing them with us.
My pleasure! They really are all great. I was pretty sure about what was going at number 1 but the other 9 changed a lot!
Wonderful !!! The fake doors next to the Buddhas is a world wide phenomenon. I wonder what it implies?
Great list, Nick! May i add 2 more to your list, or maybe 5: the Three Pagodas of Dali, Yunnan, and the Twin Pagodas in Yinchuan, Ningxia?
Well, these 10 are just from the first 50 i visited on the channel. The others you mentioned are great! They will definitely feature in future lists!
Please come and check Tianning pagoda in the tianning temple of my city Changzhou. It's pretty famous. 😂
The huge one right? i will get there one day 😂
@ with a goldentop
Simply a labor of love. We, the audience, enjoy bountiful benefits both of mind and body. 🙏📿
Thanks so much for this 🙏🙏🙏. It was a lot of fun making this video, some nice reminders!
Stunning buildings!! How about linking the individual videos in the description so those of us newer to your channel can easily find them and get more information. But regardless, great video, certainly inspiriation for places I need to visit in the future!!
Tried following the video links in the map, but they don't appear to be working!!
@AScottInChina-ug5iy I just had a check of the map and the links seem to be working ok for me....strange, let me look into it.
@@nickinchina2552 All good, working now, might have been my internet connection or VPN. But seems to have fixed itself.
Personally, I think Liu He Pagoda should be on the top 10 list
Yes...i agree it would make the list. However, this is just the top 10 of the first 50 i visited. I think the Liuhe pagoda was number 60 something. Expect to see that on the next top 10 - The Liuhe pagoda is fantastic!
Thanks for sharing😄, I visited Hangzhou last month and also found Liu He Pagoda fascinating, I naturally got quite mad when you mentioned about someone smoking in the pagoda, that twat should be locked up and banned from going near an ancient building for life😡
第一名毫无悬念
😎😎
Hello Nick, just discovered your channel recently. Seeing these pagodas in video form with someone actually walking around them gives me a much deeper appreciation of their beauty than a picture on Wikipedia does. Thanks for the videos!
My pleasure, i'm glad you found the channel! Some wonderful buildings on this list!
I think so too! 😊
Fantastic!
Everywhere you go in China there is charm. You'd have to live many lifetimes to really discover the beauty of China. I lived there for eleven years and wish to return.
老兄,关于中国的佛塔,除了你游览过的我还会推荐位于浙江省天台县的国清寺隋塔,寺庙和佛塔的历史都可以追溯到隋朝
The Mongolian orthodoxy is in Inner Mongolia. There are 28 tribes in Inner Mongolia, 6 of which are direct descendants of Genghis Khan, and 8 of which are descendants of Genghis Khan's brothers
I visited the five great Mountains and the four sacred Buddhist mountains during my last year in my undergraduate. I highly recommend Mount Emei in winter, although it can be the most tough one and you need to be careful with the monkeys. Mount Wutai is also great, with hundreds of temples there! Mount Jiuhua is fine, but given it is close to Mount Huang, the secenary may not feel as spectacular as Mount Huang. Mount Putuo is actually an island and delivers a very special context, with a combination of temples, beach & sea, which you will not find in any other places in the world (I am not a fan of clear blue sea and sky).
my hometown😂
you deserve way more views
When I was applying for grad study my parents went there and prayed to the sacred 😂 They are not really religious in daily life and are not Buddhist at all, but like ordinary Chinese people they will go to seek the (whatever) gods on important things 😂 The statues and pagodas are really great tbh. I heard that the military protected this place during Cultural Revolution so that it lasts until today without being destructed.
Nicely done and narrated of this calm and serene exploration.
Your video is rare in its deep exploration of China's historical sites.
China is so different
Wow this video is really interesting, I wonder if there’s many videos on TH-cam on this very mosque.
They still use the traditional script in Inner Mongolia. Mongolia (country) is also planning to revert back from the Cyrillic alphabet, which they adopted in the communist era.
You know more about ancient architecture than most Chinese people. I am impressed.
Instructive and stirring video. More than 30,000 of the ancient scrolls were stolen by Aurel Stein in 1906. Followed by other raiders from the Western World.
Thank you so much for bring me there with you. So clam and peaceful, I must visit there one day.
Greetings Nick, thank you for a brief history of Islam in China. Xi’an is a wonderful city☀️🌿☀️
Fabricated Justifications for the Looting and Destruction of the Summer Palace • Official Justification: British historians claimed that the Summer Palace was looted and burned as retaliation for the execution of British and French emissaries by Qing authorities. • Counter Narrative: Historical evidence suggests that plans for the looting were premeditated. Documents reveal that British and French officials had signed agreements in Europe to divide the spoils of their campaign in China, including treasures from the Summer Palace. • The Chinese execution of emissaries occurred only after the looting began, contradicting the narrative that it was the sole trigger for the palace’s destruction. Key Details of the Looting: • “Convention on Joint Captures in China”: A secret agreement signed between Britain (Queen Victoria) and France (Napoleon III) ensured meticulous division of looted items. The treaty underscored the colonial powers’ focus on equitable distribution of plunder. • Rewriting History: British historians and officials portrayed Emperor Xianfeng as a despotic ruler to justify their actions. They omitted the role of opium trafficking by British forces, which led to the death of the emperor’s son and fueled Chinese resistance. Misrepresentation of Looted Objects in Western Museums • Many stolen artifacts found their way into British and French museums, where their descriptions were altered to obscure their origins. For example: • Items were labeled as “acquired” or “gifted,” with dates changed to imply they were obtained legally. • Over 2,000 museums worldwide now house objects looted from the Summer Palace, perpetuating the legacy of colonial plunder. This retelling seeks to challenge the traditional colonial narrative and shed light on the lasting impact of the Summer Palace’s destruction on China’s cultural heritage and national memory.
Wahh kya seen hai
Nick...I have enjoyed your videos of Inner Mongolia. I can't wait for your next adventure in China. God Speed, ❤️🙏❤️
