Kirk: "What can I say? I don't like to lose..." Picard: "Extortion? You have no right to talk about extortion, mister Garak!" Sisko: "Hmmmm... Yes it is." Janeway: "Perhaps. I'm not leaving one of my crew to suffer and possibly die."
Pike: “Eeeeh, I’d say more like offering an opportunity. After all, you are entirely free to not take this job and leave the station. We will not restrict your movement, but it does seem to be in your best interest to stay onboard, in which case, we’ll need some bargaining chips on the table with our talks with Bajor… such as your little rescue operation bringing back Major Kira. It’s a pretty good offer, I’d say, given your lack of better alternatives.”
Well, if I recall correctly, it wasn't an inhabited planet so much as it was a hidey hole for the Maquis. And they all got out of there. He definitely wanted people to *think* he'd gone over the edge in that episode, though.
Wish the next 2 lines were added: Garak : I'll go along on your fool's errand, but I want one thing to be perfectly clear: I have no intention of sacrificing my life to save yours. If it looks like we're in danger of being captured, if there's any sign of trouble at all, you're on your own! Commander Sisko : Mr. Garak, I believe that's the first completely honest thing you've ever said to me.
Garak can approve of the tactics used against him and respect the people who employ those tactics -- even as he chokes on the consequences. Of course, thanks to his father, he was never the picture of mental health.
Picard would done it but never admit it directly. Like the time he tells the klingons either they give him a warbird or someone else will have his gratitude. Or the time he tells the sheliak either they give him 3 weeks/ wait 6 months for the grizelas or put their treaty where the sun never shines.
There's a different moral code that rules the day when you compare series. Picard wins by sticking to his guns and giving moving Shakespearean dialogues. In DS9 people survive by compromising their ideals.
The more I see of these Garak clips the more I think he's already aware of what's going to be asked of him and his 'i don't want involved' is all part of his act.

If one of Sisko's subordinates had attempted to mutiny after threatening him with a deadly weapon like a certain "protagonist" who shall remain nameless(assuming that The Sisko doesn't kill them right then), said subordinate would likely be in the infirmary before ending up in the brig. Even "Not in the face" Picard would have immediately thrown them in the brig. And then we wonder why Dysentery has at best mixed reviews from those who stuck with it.
Discovery is still new ........ Remember that TNG didn't really get good til after the season 2/3 cliffhanger, and DS9 likewise til the season 4 premiere.
my problem with Discovery is the ship itself, that ship is not a star trek ship at all. If they got rid of the current ship for an actual federation ship and then returned the klingons the way they are suppose to be then I might watch Discovery. So DS9 is good though didn't like it and discovery is horrible
While others would be upset...Garak just gained more respect for Sisko here! Garak thinking well played Sisko didn't know you had it in you! I am impressed!
Sisko is probably that baddest captain in all of Starfleet. Who else could punch out Q and live to tell about it? It’s a toss up between him and Picard as my favorite captains ever with Janeway in close third if not tied for second place.
I think there's a place in the mix for Kirk. He did threaten two different species at once with thermonulear obliteration if they didn't sit down and talk about their differences.
This show was just so perfect once it got rolling. Sisko was such an unorthodox commander and that really was to his advantage. I mean even Q found him interesting and that's no small feat.

Coming in behind Patrick and other social pressures (that shouldn't be an issue), had to be a daunting task. The character development in DS9 was superior to TNG. Picard is my Captain, but damn if Sisko isn't a close second.
No, Kirk wished he were Sisko. Sisko is as willing to play a bit loose with rules like Kirk, but he's a lot less randy, a lot more of a family man, and far more of an immovable object when he wants to be.
Odo's getting an education in "arm-twisting" Sisko negotiated Quark staying on DS9 in exchange for dropping charges against Nog. Now Odo watches Sisko get Garak to do something... lets be honest... Garak probably wanted to do anyway. Garak was enjoying the "road trip" in that episode.
Further proof of how different people in command do things. Picard wouldn't be this clandestine unless it was an official mission, excepting events from First Contact and Insurrection. Janeway would do a guilt trip first, then do what needed. Sisko has a whatever it takes method that has led him to preserve his crew, his family, and the history of his timeline because he will make the necessary sacrifices to do it. Besides, if Garak were removed, how would the Romulans have entered the war against the Dominion?
Must agree, Sisko employed Garrick to get the Romulans involved in the Dominion war. Sisko "knew" Garrick was ruthless and do "What" Sisko's moralility would not allow him to do himself. As per the ending of the episode that brought the Romulan's into the war "In the end I can live with it."
That whole thing was part of Garak's Obsidian Order training. After Harry threw his badge and walked away they beamed up Scorpio's body, actually Garak surgically altered, patched him up, not everyone has their heart in the same place and warped out of Earth's orbit.
"Why should I care what the Bajoran government thinks of me?" Doesn't the Bajoran government _own_ Deep Space Nine since DS9 is in their _sector?_ Isn't Garak trying to _run a shop_ on Deep Space Nine? Wouldn't this make most of his customers _Bajoran?_ Wouldn't this make the Bajoran government effectively Garak's _landlord?_ Surely, _anyone_ trying to do business in Bajoran space is well advised to put forth a reasonable effort to maintain a positive impression of themselves in the eyes of the local authorities. How is this not, clearly, an answer to Garak's question?
Because if Sisko does not carefully explain it in nuanced, but oblique, detail, Garay might have room to appeal to the Federation or Cardassia. Further the game is not as much fun if your opponent refrains from playing at peak performance.
Tbh if I were Garak I would've been like "Alright fine, I suppose I'll just have to sell clothes to people in the second safest place in the galaxy." We are talking about ELIM (son of the leader of the Obsidian Order) GARAK after all, he of all people should have multiple backup hiding spots/identities.
This is why I like Sisko out of all the starfleet captains, unlike the rest of them who are bound by federation rules and ethics, Sisko isn't afraid to get down and dirty to get the job done
+Lightningwarrior Are you kidding me? Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Archer... they all bluffed, manipulated, threatened, extorted things when push came to shove. They all 'weren't afraid to get down and dirty to get the job down'. Make no mistake: I love Sisko. But I don't see the point in bashing all of the others to make your point.
I am not bashing any of them, but most of those captains, especaily picard were so uptight and worried about following the prime directive and being upstanding officers that they made things difficult for themselves and their crew and weren't willing cross certain lines. I can give you plenty of example if you want. Sisko was a least willing to do some real underhanded things to do what was needed to be done, one of the best examples of this was the way he helped get the Romulans into joining the war against the Dominion, which was pretty much the turning point in the war. I can't see Picard or Janeway doing that Archer and Kirk are fifty, fifty, though I more likely see Kirk doing than Archer
First you accuse me of bashing the other captains, then you accuse me of hating on Picard, and both times you are wrong. I don't hate Picards, I rather like, but I am not about to ignore his faults. Picard puts great importance on following duty and the rules of starfleet, which prevents him from doing some of darker things that Sisko is willing to do. Also there is no question that Picard often tends to come off as rather dry and stiff, that what makes him the ideal starfleet officer/captain.
I think Garak was a bit disappointed in how Sisko forced him to agree to this. So to the point, none of the subtle manipulation that he was expecting. I also like how Garek and Bashir form a bond, they are the only two people on the station who are really intellectual equals, who share that common bond of extraordinary intelligence, yet feel both feel trapped/caged and unstimulated in their current lives, forced into a sort of self psychological torture brought on by their life choices. They debate intensely and don't even really like each other, both have completely different sets of ethics and views on how the world works, debating each other is perhaps one of the few intellectually challenging/stimulating things they engage in.
I say they do like each other. Note their last encounter, just before Garak left for Cardassia after the bombardment. Bashir was openly devastated, Garak openly cynical; both are signs of mutual regard. Bashir falteringly tried to project insufferable Federation optimism; Garak called him out for it but right away forgave him for being such a good friend.
While Starfleet may run the station legally it is Bajoran property and they have the final say. But with Sisko being the Bajorans Jesus he does have some pull with them.
Garak gets his psychological "revenge" on Sisko several years later. And all it cost was the lives of one Romulan Senator, one criminal, and the self respect of one Starfleet officer! This is the moment where he's like "Okay, totally willing to openly extort me, you've graduated to playing at bottom-tier game, congratulations!" Pale Moonlight is when he goes "Now . . . let's see if you can handle ADVANCED play, shall we?"
Garak: "This is extortion."
Sisko: "Yes, it is."
Garak's internal monologue: "There's hope for you, Commander..."
Im sure he was thinking something like that. Haha
The internal monologue would fit Quark better.
Daniel Cannata I'm positive you're right. lol
Cut to In the pale moonlight.
As soon as Sisko said "yes it is", I imagined Garak's look as something like "I can respect that".
"Are you extorting me??" _asks hopefully in homesick Cardassian_
Hmmm
I don't recall if it's in this scene, but Garak says "Commander if you get captured, I have no intention of rescuing you."

He thought wrong.

If it's not, then it should be. It's classic Garak.
@@Ganurath to be fair the Garak in that clip is not technically real.
I love Sisko's delivery of that line, I can instantly hear his inflections as I read it.
It was the next thing Garak said in that Scene - and Sisko's response that that was the first completely honest thing he's ever said.. was classic
And here we can see how all the captains would have dealt with that.
"THis is extortion."
Archer (Xindi-crisis): "I don't care what you call it! Help me, or get out of my sight."
Kirk: "What can I say? I don't like to lose..."
Picard: "Extortion? You have no right to talk about extortion, mister Garak!"
Sisko: "Hmmmm... Yes it is."
Janeway: "Perhaps. I'm not leaving one of my crew to suffer and possibly die."
makes me wonder what lower decks captain would say and the discovery captains and pike from strange new worlds would say lol.
I did hear all their voices while reading this.
Wonderful! I could hear their voices saying each of those lines perfectly
Jane way would have caved
Kirk would have went in guns blazing
Picard would open diplomatic channels
Only Sisko would have plotted extortion
Pike: “Eeeeh, I’d say more like offering an opportunity. After all, you are entirely free to not take this job and leave the station. *Garak's internal monologue* "I am in serious danger of liking you Captain..."
That's Commander. He wasn't a Captain yet.
And suddenly, Garek realizes he’s not dealing with a normal Starfleet officer...
And he began to respect sisko
He has become the legend. The legend that you fear
But with the Sisko.
Normal is not the word. Sisko is very Starfleet. He's not typical.
@@TheWinterShadow You'll have to define the difference between normal and typical there, as they are often synonymous.
There's a hint of a smile on Garak's face at the end. I'd almost say he looks proud of Sisko.
LocksAndChains “...There May be hope for you yet commander.”
Just like Quark when Sisko offered to bribe him
Not at all
Garak: "Picard would never extort someone"
Sisko: "I'm not Picard!"
Except Picard did when he was trying to get a cloaked ship to go to Romulus.
Picard will extort if needed. He has a lot of capital with others to play with.
@@mandolinman2006 I'm sure Picard thought of it more like calling in a favor owed to him. Or at least that's what he would tell people.
@@JackgarPrime oh, he might try to say that, but you could tell he didn't believe that by the shit-eating grin he had afterwards.

Garak grins proudly.
I half expect him to say he thought it was blackmail
There may be hope for you yet, my dear captain.
And that's why we love Sisko. When accused of extortion: "Mmmmm. Yes it is."
It's his MO. Remember, in the pilot, he "convinced" Quark to stay on station by holding Nog in the brig.
Well, if I recall correctly, it wasn't an inhabited planet so much as it was a hidey hole for the Maquis. And they all got out of there. He definitely wanted people to *think* he'd gone over the edge in that episode, though.
That's why Sisko was the perfect officer for this assignment. Picard or Kirk would've been in over their heads there.
"Is that what I'm doing?"
Somehow, I just can't imagine Jean-Luc Picard delivering the same acknowledgment.
I just love the moment Sisko looks away, as if contemplating, 'can I use another word to describe this' and then he just owns up to it.
That moment.
Another works could be blackmail 😂

Commander Sisko : Mr. Garak, I believe that's the first completely honest thing you've ever said to me.
TOTALLY AGREE!!! The full scene is a thing of beauty. DS9 was really cooking by this point.
Three amazing characters played perfectly in one scene.
Garak can approve of the tactics used against him and respect the people who employ those tactics -- even as he chokes on the consequences. Of course, thanks to his father, he was never the picture of mental health.

I think Sisko was born from the collective times fans said, "Come on Picard stop being so nice and playing by the book."
Which is ironic considering what he was like at the academy in his younger days
Sisko was very Starfleet...he just wasn't typical Starfleet.
And people complain about how much Discovery pushes the Federation’s ‘grey area’...
DS9 nailed its tone of war and cold war.

Sisko never was afraid to twist an arm to get things done, especially with the shady types. He did the same thing once or twice with Quark.
Mr. Brooks has come a long way since he played Hawk on Spencer For Hire.
"Believe me" sure sign of lying.
Dirty pool, old man!

It always cracks me up when a Cardassian calls foul play.
Maybe they expect Federation officers to live up to their own codes of conduct. They do the same with other Cardassians after all.
one of the best scenes of Cmdr Sisko.

+Lightingwarrior Since Picard is my favourite captain and you seem to hate him, I don't think there's a point to further discussion.
+Lightingwarrior Alright, then what are Sisko's faults?
Yes it is.
Sicko, zero fucks given.
You got to speak their language.
Kind of interesting how Sisko was willing to expel Garak from DS9 just because some of the civilians on the station doesn't like Cardassians.
While Starfleet may run the station legally it is Bajoran property and they have the final say. But with Sisko being the Bajorans Jesus he does have some pull with them.
@@ff3player More like Moses, maybe. Yes, his mother was possessed by a Prophet, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is divine.
Sisko .... Is the man!
ANd yes I love Kirk. The real one
"Yes it is." Lmao
Garak gets his psychological "revenge" on Sisko several years later. And all it cost was the lives of one Romulan Senator, one criminal, and the self respect of one Starfleet officer!
This is the moment where he's like "Okay, totally willing to openly extort me, you've graduated to playing at bottom-tier game, congratulations!" Pale Moonlight is when he goes "Now . . . let's see if you can handle ADVANCED play, shall we?"
Hmmm... Yes it is! Lol. 😂
I love Garak.
Sisko doesn't get the proper respect he deserves among the Trek fandom.
