  • In this instalment of the Benly restoration I tackle one of the main issues with the bike running not quite as smoothly as I would like.

Enjoyable relaxed presentation of this Benly restoration. So much is learnt from these type of videos for specific bike models. 👍

    Hi Guy.
Really enjoying the Benly saga. My wife and son's bought me a 200 Benly for my 50th, my dad had one when I was a kid. I had running issues caused by a split in the airbox to carb rubber tube. I bought a second hand airbox complete, but also added a Chinese carb for 30 quid. After half hour setting it up it has been perfect, now running sweetly. I have the original to rebuild but probably won't bother. Look forward to hearing more.
    Mike

Hi ya mate it's Paul from the benly owners club, if the revs are hanging it might have an air leak in the barb manifold there's 2 o rings that perish over time and a third o ring where the carb bolts onto it 👍

Hi Guy. Enjoying your Benly series. You ask about cheaper Chinese carbs. I’ve built quite a few 125s over the last two years and in practically every case I’ve ended up fitting a new Chinese carb from eBay. Specifically I fitted a new Chinese cylinders kit to a 125 Benly. Ran much better but when I fitted a (really) cheap Chinese carb it took off like a scalded cat. On one occasion I bought another cheap one and it had a blocked idle jet - not machined out! So I would say definitely go for the cheap Chinese but check jets before you fit it. Also bear in mind that the cheapies don’t have mixture screws. Still have the jets and needles to mess with tho, obviously. Hope this helps.
    All the best,
    Neil Harris.

Hello Guy, enjoying the videos. I have had most of your current issues over the years with small Honda carbs. (I would use the needle and jet as a pair.) But the biggest issues I’ve had is float height. I’ve found the nearer the correct setting height, becomes, it is an indicator of the rest of the carb setup and it’s correct performance. The last one I had playing me up, one side of a float was holding an amount of fuel which wasn’t obvious but played havoc with the setup. ( pin hole) if you can run with the correct height you can work toward getting it spot on.
P.S. I had a £35 carb similar to the one on your bike and it setup fine. Pot luck on the supplier. Your bike sounds pretty good so I wouldn’t go that way my friend.
    All the best Kevin.

Simple carb but they are abit of a faff to assemble with the spring tension needing to be held. I bought a new one; mainly as I suspected my floats were porous, was about £22 (including a spark plug & pod filter!) and has the Keihin name on it (🤔!) Still seems to have high tickover issues after several fettles but mainly when cold so sort of acts like an auto choke!

On my 84 Ben,y I had a worn needle jet so was rich at tickover- banging and popping Replaced as you did and was sweet. For the hunting / revving I eventually tracked an air leak down to the throttle cable inlet on top of the card. Rubber had perished so air was getting drawin in through the top, down the centre of the slide. I sealed up the cable to carb and loads better. Wish I had a 5th gear but other than that a great hack..

Sounding much nicer now Guy. I had issues with the throttle cables on my CB125T (same as yours in the background) years ago, the splitter under the seat was sticking. Your cable seemed nice and free. Hopefully you have it sorted now. Best wishes, Dean at Retromeccanica, Oxfordshire.

Sounds better. I take it you put a new o-ring in? Have a fiddle with the fuel screw too .

My benly is hunting a bit in first but runs ok once warm but throttle grabs in first. Plugs quite white so maybe a bit too lean.

It might be different fôr you but i dônt recommended hopefully this will help! I'n the end i had to search high and low for a original carb!

Hello Guy, we a CD185 Benly that already had a Chinese carb on, it worked really well and no problem pulling up hill. Some footage of it running here th-cam.com/video/5GpzqKTObRE/w-d-xo.html Good luck with your project.

I've bought cheap carbs off ebay.
Never buy cheap carbs off ebay.
They're badly made, in the dark, by blind people... with no fingers.
I had one eat itself while riding 🤣 literally chewed itself to bits.
