Softer reeds help, but there’s not really a great way to mute a saxophone without spending a lot of money.
If you have a lot of money, then the E-Sax sound case is about $600.
There is also a new item hitting the market called the EMEO Digital Saxophone which is supposed to be pretty good for practicing key presses . But it doesn’t help with your embouchure at all.
EMEO is around $1200-$1500, but it’s super cool if you have the money.

I have been practicing and playing for 3+ years and always wondered, how the hell do professionals get that sound. I thought I had a sqeaky saxophone, guess what it was the way I was blowing. You know this guy is right and I actually took the time from my practice session to comment on the video. The sound is magical after you follow what he is teaching, trust me
    A happy student :)

I bought a tenor sax some years back because I LOVED the jazz sound it produces. I could not even blow a sound at first except a squeak. Some friends told me I sounded like a sick goose. I watched a lot of youtube instruction, and I practiced EVERY day for a minimum of an hour. For sure I learned to play, but I still cannot read a lick of music. I play fairly well by ear though!! By the way, I am 67!!! I haven't played for a few years, so went today and bought a good used alto (VITO) from a kid who hated it and failed band because he could not learn. Came across this channel and subscribed!!! All my learning is coming back and I am improving by watching your videos. Thanks!!! Hang in there, you all...if this old man can do it, you younger folks surely can!!!

While in graduate school in New South Wales, my wife bought me an Ice Black Cannonball Tenor Saxophone. I opened that case and was intimidated. She bought it for me in 2013 and I’ve never even played it once. So today I decided to take it out of its linen wraps and put it together. Then looked and found your videos. I feel comfortable trying to learn from you. Hope you don’t mind a student reaching out with questions. I want to learn this thing! Thank you from Minnesota!

You have no idea how glad I am to have discovered your video series! I studied years ago with the first teacher of Kenny G, Jeff cashua and others. He taught us what you are teaching llama teeth resting on top, lips gripping the mouthpiece and Reed equally all around, and not curling your lip over your teeth! The other essential item was learning to blow the air properly. And yes, beginners should absolutely start on a one and a half. You are so spot-on!

    Hi Jamie,
After having played clarinet for years, I recently (very recently: 5 days ago) buyed me a tenor sax. I've always loved the sound of the saxophone (and more particular the tenor), but for long I didn't have the time nor the means to spent on a horn. But now I'm retired I finaly could follow my heart.
Since a couple of weeks I'm following your TH-cam channel and the lessons I learned before buying me a sax did put me on the right track immediately when I started blowing the big horn for the first time (and a tenor is BIG compared to a clarinet).
So what I took from your lessons when I started on the sax is:
    1. Forget the clarinet embouchure.
    2. Breath deep: you need a lot of air.
    3. The low notes are difficult, everybody has struggled with them initially, so don't get discouraged.
And with regard to point 2: I found out that the notes come out better when I play standing up instead of sitting down.
Well, that's my story so far. I just want to give you a BIG thumbs up for putting me on the right track right from the start.
    Regard,
    Gerard

I went online and checked a few videos on saxophone embouchure and I have to say that your video probably had the most useful tips to change the way I play. Now it's just a matter of practice in order to "unlearn" the way I played before. Once again, thank you!

Am now 38. I played piano from a young age until i was almost 18 with lessons from the age of around 8, started with a small keyboard at 3-4 yrs old and went from there. Eventually studied my way to ABRSM grade 5. Then life got in the way. A year or so ago i got it tuned and am getting back into it again, so much is flooding back so quickly.
Yesterday to add to my journey, i took delivery of an Alto i bought from Gear4music.
Was having a try after work last night and lets just say is going to take a while to get used to what I'm doing (is the first woodwind ive ever tried lol) mostly my embouchure is going to take a while to develop. Im going to have to get some lighter reeds, only have a 2.5 that came along in the packaging atm, and lets say im a bit like a squeaky goose atm 😂😂

My mine focus has been praying my embouchure with just the mouthpiece and neck. Another instructor recommended downloading a tuner that reads what note your on. I always wanted to learn how to play the saxophone. I was named after the jazz saxophonist Najee , because my father wanted me to become a musician. I actually play 12 with violin/viola being my principle instruments . I always wanted to learn the saxophone, mainly the soprano

Man I’ve always been musically huge into jazz and blues, Miles Davis, Coltrain, Parker. Funny thing is didn’t know them when I was a little kid but I still got exposed to sax and my journey started, HOW I got exposed to sax is funny…it was Zoot from the muppets I first saw and heard the sax. From there then I fell in love with the music played on the Charlie Brown cartoons and movies, funny thing is instead of playing the sax all this time I’ve been a lead guitar for over 20 years. But the sax is calling stronger than ever, dunno if it’s my growing older age or what but I wanna relax and be like Zoot now 🤣 so I’m gonna go for it and learn a new instrument and it’ll be the sax.

Question: I’ve listened to several “Smooth Jazz” sax artists, and while they all have their own sound, one of them …. Grover Washington Jr ….. has a very unique style that sounds like (on some songs at least) he is playing the notes just a tad ahead or behind the beat. At any rate, for me it is his “signature sound”.
