Herbie is the genius who put the electronic synthesizer into jazz and made it functional for old school, progressive and abstract and make it all funky.
Herbie's vibe is infectious, he's having so much fun. He gives other musicians room to breathe and shine. Steps on nobody's toes, just brings out the best in everyone he plays with. Would be awesome to jam with him, what a legend!
Some of the comments on here are laughable. Some of y'all act like Herbie can't reinterpret his own song as he chooses. He wrote it he can do it how he wants. You don't have to like it but to criticize it as though it's unmusical is just beyond asinine
okay it's not unmusical, it's just the ramblingest, overlong, least groovy, least interesting live version i've heard in a long time. including those i've witnessed at the local yokel jazz session. he and the band had a bad day. whatever. CAN I SAY THAT, DAD? shit.
all i can say about this is that the chemistry between basist and herbie is just amazing, they are laughing during performing and this requires a lot of confidence, and herbie also looks like a great and nice guy which i'd love to meet, and he is also an amazing piano player of course! thanks so much for sharing this song with us :)
Can't believe this performance has escaped me until today, thank you for posting. It's borderline insulting to draw attention to one "part" of this remarkable performance, but I can't help it. @5:15 through 5:38, just blown away. Unbelievably creative syncopation, the looks on their faces... Call me crazy but it felt like stumbling, in control, up a hill?
That was amazing! I had so much fun watching Herbie Hancock and his group play, the way he switches instruments like that is amazing! What an entertainer! The band is so talented, geniussss
Herbie, who's got musical capital to criticize his music? I love the original Waterman Man. He was quite young when that was recorded. He had recorded with some of the greatest jazz stars by his 25th birthday. When Headhunters came out it was a shock to the jazz establishment. Once I got it and listened to it I saw he redifined funk with his deep soul. They're still imitating his music. He would excuse the uninformed for their criricism.
this will be the 50 time i pushed the replay button, so lovely groove.. i still looking at the face of the drummer he is also killing it, but herbie's en James grooves... no words just WOW
I have heard sooooo much good music in my life but honestly, that is just prolific. I loved it all, but mostly the bass (sorry, don't know his name) and Herbie - that interaction, in fact the interaction throughout is something else.
Shoot man I play saxophone and I pray to the lord that I can give off an energy similar to Herbie’s one day. I got a while to go though I’m only in 8th grade

James Genus (bass), Trevor Lawrence, Jr. (drums) and Lionel Loueke (guitar)
Thank you, I hate jazz videos that doesn't include the personnel in the description. Even more difficult to find that info for a live.
who is on the keyboard?
Obrigado.
kkkkkkkkkk
@Leone it's Brad Mehldau :P
He enters with this awesome, Stevie Wonder-esque intro.
Macbook sporting Songs in the Key of Life.
what are the albums on display on his mac?
I love how he is able to bring the feel of "jazz" using 2012 technology

He once told me when he's being criticized the most, that's when he knows he's doing something right.
andrew bruss Considering the goof trumpet player he played with prior to going on his own, the dingbats are lucky it didn’t go any further.
@@kleinequietboykleinequietb7126 you think you can ever do it better than Herbie
Kleinequietboy Kleinequietboy ssa ym kcus
I just love how much fun they're having. Especially him and the bass player
3:05, the moment they get into the groove my whole body got tingles that was amazing
Ooooh! Didn’t see that coming!
To think he did that when he was 72 is mind blowing... His inventiveness and vitality never ceases to amaze me!
He’s 84 and now and still at the same level. Just saw him live yesterday.

Exactly! I imagine he gets tired of playing it the same ol' way. You gotta reinvent sometimes.
🔥🔥🔥
grandiose!!!!!!!!!!!
All my guys
Great music! The camera direction was a little off, as the guitar was only cut to right after his solo a couple of times, like 3:47.
WoW!!!!
Non ho mai sentito nulla del genere. Solo il meglio. Punto.
+Fabio Fortunati Totally agree! Great, best..... Hancock is #1 for me since many years!
