@ckatlinga I'd start by not feeding my fish for a few days. They can handle it. Check ammonia after three days of no feeding. If ammonia is good, then you're feeding too much.
@ckatlinga Since you don't have fish then there's no hurry right? Since you have a cycle I'm not sure why you're still adding ammonia. I'd stop. I'm assuming your nitrites are okay right? Put some plants in the tank and they'll eat the ammonia. Maybe some fast growing like wisteria or whatever your LFS has. I like dwarf sag. It grows like weeds in my tanks.
@ckatlinga It sucks. I'd add plants and do nothing else. Plants will eat the ammonia before the nitrates. As long as your nitrates stay "orange" you should be okay. If they turn red, do a water change. Otherwise nothing else. No dosing. You have a cycle and something got messed up (most likely the substrate). The water will probably get cloudy for a few days. Let it. That's the bacteria that eats ammonia. Good luck.
Excellent video as always George, honest and informative. I've always been interested in the Fluval Flex 57 litre tank. To be honest I'm actually a sucker for Fluval, especially the second generation 19 litre and 10 litre Spec which I'm currently running sporting two beautiful male Betta's. For me I always appreciated the fact that the majority of the Fluval tanks are all in one systems, usually have space to hide a heater, are plug and play user friendly and for the best part don't break the bank when purchasing one or two. I have a relatively small flat so my two Specs fit perfectly in my living room and look great against the scale of the room and compliment it's furniture, as well as completely setting my off my living room and adding that extra light when I'm chilling at night next to my underwater gardens. I'm trying to get the scape on both tanks a lot better so when my local aquarium shop opens back up I'll be seeing what I can do in regards to that. I also have an extra gen 2 Fluval Spec 19 litre new in box if your ever in Glasgow and fancy shooting an Aquascaping video 🤣 Hope your well. Take care.
We don't always believe the teacher, but as an 'old' student, believe me he's right. Aquariums are a real blessing for health and mood (I'm not ashamed to admit that I struggle during this hard period, but my living room tank is like an oasis to me, helping me foresee a brighter future and endure the present). But it only works if your aquarium isn't a source of stress, which means it has to work. This is done like George says: start simple, follow a single recipe, don't deviate from it, accept that the results won't come in a day. These are things that will help you be happier even outside of aquascaping. And it works. If you doubt it, just think that a company like tropica makes its entire business model around making you return to their products after being successful. It works. If it doesn't, go back to the simple rules. It'll work. You'll love it.
It works. I set up a fluvial flex the smaller one and used all Tropica products including plants. The tank is utterly stunning and its been running about a year. Im about to set up another 60L tank all with Tropica products.
Just a word of warning about keeping a store of hardscape: I had a beautiful and quite expensive piece of knotted wood that I'd used previously in a 'scape and had then stored outside for future use. Later on just before xmas my wife was very pleased to show me her latest creation; a spray paint covered "twiggy branch" to keep on the fire place!! For the last two years now that same "twiggy branch" has been soaking (inbetween scrubbing) outside in a tub! I'm hoping one day it might be clean enough to use again!!
George, great guide for beginners. I am thinking of getting back into the hobby after a ten year break, and your information is well paced, packed full of advice, and doesn’t talk down to your audience. Thanks. Brilliant.
Can’t wait to see how this tank develops and yeah, it sucks when driftwood floats 😰 I’m setting up my tank in the next few days and I’m going to have to anchor the wood down
Usually i took a few stones like river quartz/granite , bind it to the driftwood big or small with waterproof epoxy putty or fishing leads..to anchor it down firmly into the substrate . It serves as good heavy base. Sometimes if I could get hold a heavy flat unglazed floor tile . I would bind the driftwood to dat and the substrate would hide the base tile nicely... easy to pick/place in a pinch. Btw, how is your Oji-san's durian seedling?
George thank you for all you do. You introduced me to the world of aquascaping and I did my first nano one a month ago. I am now awaiting my supplies to do another on a new tank. It is so helpful and comforting to watch your videos and live feeds during these trying times. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I loved that intro monologue George. I used to have aquariums before i moved about 3 years ago and now im getting back into it thank to people like you. Thank you.
Your “bloopers” reminded me of my past. Back when the earth was still cooling, I did voice overs for radio. They were on reel to reel tape and edited with a razor blade, bloopers tossed on the floor. My lifetime pile of outtakes would fill the Tropica warehouses.
I recently bought some smart sockets that i now use for all of my aquarium electronics instead of timers. Also a great option if you are into smart home stuff/like controlling stuff with your phone :).
The Fluval Flex 57 l Aquarium is not only for beginners, but also for people for whom the effort to maintain an aquarium has become too great. I started 35 years ago with a 400 l aquarium, then I had a 250 l aquarium and last but not least, I had a 65 l aquarium. Now I change to another category smaller. The reason is that the Fluval Flex 57 l aquarium is 12 cm lower than my last 65 l aquarium. This makes it easier for me to reach the bottom of the tank and easier to change the water. I could also stop with aquariums, but for me a home without an aquarium is not a home.
I have the same tank ready to set up. Thank you so much for such an informative video. I especially appreciate your listing the plant names starting at 19:05.
Awesome George as per, love how honest you are regards things don't always go to plan, zero ego and that for sure is a positive trait in a person, especially in these difficult times, take care, and stay safe you and your family dude.and all watching.
Love your content and always learning from you. The bloopers were also great! Between the wood floating and the re-takes, it’s heartening to know that it’s your hard work that makes it seem so effortless. I now have a red colander in your honour. Thank you for the excellent content. You are a true craftsman.
I have one of these Fluval Flexes, and I love it! Etsy has a couple of people who make 3-D printed upgrades to the Flexes in both 9 and 15 gallon size and both black and white. I have Amano shrimp, so I got the covers where they’re tiny holes and the baby shrimp can’t get into the back. I really like them. 😊
Great content, as always. I have to admit, the bloopers part was my favorite. It is nice that you don't shy away from showing that you are just an ordinary guy. That was very endearing. Well, not as much as Tommy.
George your videos and live streaming help keep me motivated after a hard day of work to maintain my aquariums . I do wish I had more free time like you folks out there but the United States seems to not care about the covid 19 ordeal sadly especially the state that I live in they have deemed everyone an essential worker.
Hi George, top, top video today, loaded with so much information. Just a short one from me today, 😉 Best wishes and stay safe. Love the outtakes by the way 🤣
Can't wait to see some updates, George. You're videos are definitely keeping me (and I'm sure others) going during this crazy time. Stay safe and thanks for producing great content! :D
🙏🏼🙏🏼ah George I have missed your tutorials. Your original flex scape is what got me into the hobby. Now iam thinking of getting a third tank. Can’t wait to see this grow in. Great bloopers to. Hilarious. Stay safe 👍🏼💚
I've been a dog groomer for 20 years and my favorite by far is schnauzer ♥️♥️ such a perfect little family member! Thank you so much for doing another beginner's guide on a low budget! Love the plant selection! And thank you for the lighting suggestions and explaining it. It is exciting to see what you do and the tips you share! Much love my friend ♥️🙏🌱🐟🌿
Also thank you for describing the actual soil you're using! The wood is so cool! Is there a link that links me to tropica in the United States and would I be able to order from them?
Really useful for me as Im setting up my first tank during lockdown! I managed to get plants just before shops shut but I’m itching to get some livestock in. There is something quite chilled about this film that is just what we need at this time. I would love a follow up to this explaining your tank cycling technique. Cheers
Man I love what you did with your floval flex I recently purchased one and have it with plastic plants in going to do a change and do mine exactly like your hope i can find the plants
I have made the most of the extra time and energy to catch up on all my tanks. A few rescapes and general maintenance. First time all my tanks are looking good at the same time.😊 Thanks George for being You brother. Stay safe and keep on scaping👍🌿👍🌿👍 sorry about the wood b.t.w.😣
Instant like because I have this aquarium at home! Word of caution, quadricostatus is VERY invasive and will quickly overrun the aquarium. I literally had to go on neverending hunt of cutting the runners even in a low tech non CO2 scape;. I ended up removing this plant. Cannot wait for updates on this tank.
Hi George, thanks for doing this and keeping us all occupied in the current crisis. One suggestion, add some floating plants and no fish and don't do any water changes and see what happens - for a month or two.
this is the first channel i get two Tetra ads in a row haha :D And i actually don't mind :P Great channel! Really helpful for me since i am planned a whole rescape for my Scapers Tank.
Thank You very much for your videos and sharing all of your knowledge. It has been a huge help in me setting up my first planted tank!! Your projects all look really awesome.
It is now August and here in Southern California, we continue to try to maintain social distancing. I discovered aquascaping while researching aquarium care. It has really saved my sanity and sparked my creativity. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!
Great video George! I prefer the tropica soil as well over the ADA amazonia. Amazonia leeches nutrients for a long time and requires a lot more maintenance in the beginning to keep nutrients normal level. Combining the tropica substrate and tropica soil is a great combination in my opinion!
Hi George :-) Great video as always and right on time for me. I am new to the hobby and right now I am planing my first 2x 25 l Betta tanks. I can order all the plants from Tropica that I want, but I must say that it's not easy to choose the right plants! This helped me to choose at least some of them :-) Thank you!
Thanks for a nice video George. Fyi I have challenges finding good stands for my aquariums, so I would be interested in sources/ideas for those. Take care.
I agree that undestocking fish is healthier and I actually think looks more natural. I think the fish are less stressed as well (assuming you meet the minimum for those who like to school)
Hi George, Firstly Your a legend!!! Now here you have presented yet another innovative creation that continues to inspire. I have recently created a Fluval 57L setup and called it "Darkness & Light" perhaps a very appropriate title during these times and I recall you saying that the anubis enjoys the dark side. I used a bonais wood in my scape and would love to post it so maybe I will link it in sometime if your interested, but I have only scaped for a little while so still a beginner. Anyway, I wanted to say Thank you for all that you do and for the way you freely share your hints, tips and artistry. Oh and the by the way I have preordered the hardcover copy of your book that I have yet to see you promote in any of your tutorials, I ordered mine from Amazon UK - Aquascaping: A Step-By-Step Guide to Planting, Styling, and Maintaining Beautiful Aquariums by George Farmer - I was also thinking if you put a link in your description on all your youtube videos surely you can earn a little something extra to help support you in your valuable work. You deserve an OBE for Arts - Just an idea but in the meantime Keeeeeeeeeeeeeep on Scaping !!!!
I just found your channel. I’m looking rescape my bow front 15 gallon after a ammonia spike loss. 🙁your channel is awesome. Thank you. Hope you and your family are ok 🌟👍🥰
Right before all the junk happened 😂 every one of my dwarf cichlid pairs decided to spawn and I’ve had nothing but time to grow them out. Really excited that I’ll actually have a good survival rate.
So I have the Fluval Flex 34L, I love it... Any reason why you didn’t use the water inlet splitter? Did you find better flow without it connected or was this removed to make planting/filming easier?? Thanks 👍🏻
Well done George, no smirking or smiling during your 53b ‘commercial’. I have the same Flex which has been set up for 14 months. I’ve a slight problem with the said 53b, it’s gone what can only be described as ‘leggy’. Is this a lack of light penetration? The soil is Tropica and I dose with Premium. Please keep videoing in these troubled times.
I'd say that, yes. It's the case with every stem plant but the 53b does that a lot to me (because of its large leaves, I guess). I just do what I do with every other stems and what George does : I cut the top parts and replant them. Then both parts form a nice bush.
Thanks for the excellent content. I have Flex in the 9 gallon variety, and I have a very similar island composition. I have a hard time getting carpet plants to go. Maybe I can order some 1-2-Grow since my local stores don't stock Tropica.
Would love to see how to take cuttings of your plants I done loads of mods on the flex and found remove all and stock filter but great video as always thank you again be safe
I'm thinking of changing from stone gravel to create exactly what you have done here. I'm a beginner so please excuse me if this is a silly question. Shall I use my original water when adding my fish and shrimps back in? If so how much? And how long can I leave my fish in a temporary container safely before adding in to the new set up? Thank you in advance. All advice is welcome 😊
Hi George. Is it Octopus wood? Have just seen a similar looking product on the riverwood aquatics website under that name, looks like ramous wood stuck to redmoor or similar! Cheers for the as always informative content.
I recently purchased this tank and this video was a perfect guide for my first attempt at an aquascape so thank you! Can anyone tell me how long i should wait before i add fish?

Pets are loving the lockdown, at least there’s someone out there who appreciates it! 😊

@George, the tip on prepping the Anubias is truly a top tip. Thanks for that part specifically. Keep rocking.
You'll definitely have to do more videos like this. Economy is finished for a few years ahead. Ppl won't have money for expensive aquascape aquariums
Damo Ward lol
I recently bought some smart sockets that i now use for all of my aquarium electronics instead of timers. Also a great option if you are into smart home stuff/like controlling stuff with your phone :).
Awesome video as always. I love that you have shown that a budget scape can still be beautiful.

Nice content again George! 🦐✔️
Quintessentially British.

Love how your videos are full of knowledgeable information
I have one of these Fluval Flexes, and I love it! Etsy has a couple of people who make 3-D printed upgrades to the Flexes in both 9 and 15 gallon size and both black and white. Hello from Brazil. Keep on scaping 🤗👍
Nice video, some of those bloopers made me think I was watching MD Fish Tanks!
Like even before watching, as usual
Nice one again George
That is a lovely piece of driftwood, like the crown of an Ent.

Hey that's looking cool! I really like that wood! Ahh the dreaded floating wood! Thats happened to me quite a few times!
Hi George, thanks for doing this and keeping us all occupied in the current crisis. One suggestion, add some floating plants and no fish and don't do any water changes and see what happens - for a month or two.
George is going to look like swarznegger by the end of lockdown :)
this is the first channel i get two Tetra ads in a row haha :D And i actually don't mind :P Great channel! Really helpful for me since i am planned a whole rescape for my Scapers Tank.

I just purchased a 15 gallon Fluval flex today at PetSmart :)
Merci George pour cette vidéo !!! 👍👍👍
Merci Guy!
That red collander has become a hallmark of you!
Love the cushion! When the wood floated, I suppose there would be too much choice language to include the soundtrack :D
Thanks for a nice video George. Fyi I have challenges finding good stands for my aquariums, so I would be interested in sources/ideas for those. Take care.
Great video George! Stay safe. :)
I was thinking earlier today it would be good if you made some content on no co2 aquascapes while everyone is in lockdown.
I agree that undestocking fish is healthier and I actually think looks more natural. I think the fish are less stressed as well (assuming you meet the minimum for those who like to school)
I rewatch this one a few times per year I think!
Looks awesome!!! Well done on this setup mate 👍

Thanks so much!
Great video. I always learn something from your explanations. Thank you for sharing! Cherri-O! -Little Bobby
Cheers mate
Did you ever post a video of how this tank looked after the plants grew? 😊
Thanks for the excellent content. I have Flex in the 9 gallon variety, and I have a very similar island composition. I have a hard time getting carpet plants to go. Maybe I can order some 1-2-Grow since my local stores don't stock Tropica.
On the lighting; wouldn't you want to add a lighter top soil on top of the substrate to reflect the light better in a setup like this?
Nice fluval flex aquascape
I was going to buy that tank, grate scape once again
Would love to see how to take cuttings of your plants I done loads of mods on the flex and found remove all and stock filter but great video as always thank you again be safe
Stunning 😎
Thanks Alan
Love the bloopers. =D
Thanks mate
Lol. I really appreciate your bloopers.
Thanks for the info:)
Great video George! I was certain you were going to use java fern trident! lol
There’s still time! 💚😂
@@GeorgeFarmerStudios I just bought 5 pots of Trident! By the way, do you trim trident or just leave it to keep growing?
@George - could you give the list of what you used, please - I'm brand new and looking to aquascape a new tank to keep some neons in?
Thanks
I can’t wait till quarantine in the US is over so I can finish the aqua scape that I’ve been half way done with for the past two months... lol

All jokes aside, amazing content & love your scapes.
Hi I would love to set up my new fluval like you have posted. Can you give a list of plants and growing media you used please.
Nice video George 👍
