    I’m posting this video here th-cam.com/video/1QlnhlO6Gu8/w-d-xo.html as it has been recommended down in the comments by Jim. I’ve not found success in using the ultimate fix method from that video but apparently this is the best way to do that. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong, still confused by this and I’m still trying to figure it out.

      davinci literally at points feel like rocket science lol, there is so much complexities involved in this and I feel like the only people who have the true answers are the people who coded it

    @Mariusz Gajdzik
    The settings you are using work on your specific case, but they are technically wrong, they are the opposite of what is best practice and they are not recommended especially for
    delivering content for the web - You shouldn't suggest these settings.
    First of all, Apple uses a wired combination of Gamut and Gamma which doesn't exist as ''standard'' and they don't match exactly your settings.
    DCI-P3 is the Theatrical cinema standard that uses D60 as a white point and gamma 2.6.
    Apple P3 is still DCI-P3 gamut but with D65 white point and gamma 2.2 instead.
    Your settings are close to the Apple specification but not quite.
    You are altering the white point (D60 vs D65) in your output, gamma is correct for Apple specs as sRGB means gamma 2.2
    Anyway, these are not video standards and encoding any video content like these means that software, OS or browsers that don't use colour management are going to ignore these settings and assume your video is encoded as Rec709 gamma 2.4. - Just because everything is encoded with these standards.
    In all these cases the reproduction of your videos will change drastically. That will happen on Windows for example and on Mac that uses a non-Apple display.
    Da Vinci Resolve, as default, doesn't use the Mac OS colour management for preview - Quicktime, like most Apple apps, is a colour-managed application instead.
    The issue to fix is the mismatch between the 'preview in Resolve GUI/Viewer and Quicktime/TH-cam, not a rendering issue.
    When you activate > USE MAC DISPLAY COLOUR PROFILE FOR VIEWER
    You are allowing the Resolve viewer to read the ICC profile of your display, Rec709 colour space can be properly mapped on the P3-D65 gamma 2.2 colours that your display is set to.
    Because of all o that the viewer in Resolve will now match the Quicktime rendering previews and you can start grading.
    You can use Davinci Resolve YRGB Colour managed workflow in SDR if you want, but you still need to set the custom output display to Rec709-A
    Rec709-A Means that Rec709 is going to be mapped for A-pple display preview, and the setup is complete.
    These settings are not changing how Resolve renders colours and gamma (your settings actually do that).
    These settings fix how Resolve viewer looks like, matching Quicktime viewer. Which is the right workflow.
    To conclude, everything above is not a ''professional'' setup. It's a workaround for Mac Os colour management.
    To deliver professionally to clients as a colourist or for broadcast, you should use a Reference display, calibrated for Rec709 and receive a clean signal from a decklick card.
    This is going to bypass all the OS colour management or video card and setting and ensure accuracy and consistent results.

    Hi, congratulations for the video it's very clear. I had a question about it, I work with a Mac and an external monitor calibrated in range 2.4, On daVinci I work by setting the color space in rec 709 range 2.4. For the gamma shift problem the exported files are more faded, if I used the Mac monitor I would use rec-A; but since I use an external monitor (so it can't be set in rec 709) how do I have the same result between the preview and the exported files? I know that the problem is Quick time, but anyway if I upload them on TH-cam I see the same problem.
    Thank you very much, sorry to bother you.

  • @allenpayne9182

    Not sure if it is a good idea to set it to P3 if you're exporting for TH-cam and platform which expects Rec709. I think the Rec709-A is a better option. But I like the video anyway. Always good to have people making videos about the topic. And you are not trying to fix it in the grade. You're trying to fix the "tag problem" using color management. And this is the right way to do it. I am just not sure if it is a good idea using "P3" tag for rec709 exports.

    • @MariuszGajdzik
      @MariuszGajdzik  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The rec709a bakes it in, and it looks oversaturated in VLC and Firefox unfortunately. I needed to match them across all the software as many of my customers use VLC. Like I mentioned I’m not sure it’s the best way, but it seems to work the best for my needs. Thanks for your additional info tho! Appreciate it 😊

    • @eriklindahl7376
      @eriklindahl7376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree. Working in Rec709 / Gamma 2.4 and then tagging the footage with P3 / Gamma 2.2 doesn’t sound great. Will have to test if this is viable.

    • @eriklindahl7376
      @eriklindahl7376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MariuszGajdzik do note VLC isn’t a good app to check colors in. It’s not color managed at all. Then again… Since you disable color managed viewers in Resolve, VLC and Resolve would in theory match similarly wrong.
      Firefox I’m not up to speed with in terms or respecting color profiles or not.

    Thank you for your great video. I tried your way in Da Vinci Resolve studio 18 with the settings below, but it didn’t work.
    Footage: Blackmagic raw shot on Sigma fp through BMD video Assist 12G
    Used pc: MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16” 2021
    Project settings
    input color space: BMD Film Gen1
    Timeline color space: Rec.2020 / ST2084 1000nit
    Output color space: Rec.2020 / Rec.709-A
    The exported QuickTime PeoRes 4444XQ color was more saturated, and a little dense in color.
    I would like to export HDR ProRes file, but what should I do to complete precise color?
    It would be very grateful if you could give me any ideas.

    Interestingly enough, this did work perfectly when viewing the colorgrade in Quicktime and even TH-cam. THOUGH, when exporting a Prores final instead of H.264, the colors absolutely implode on TH-cam.
    Does anyone know why? H.264 is such a low file size that it comes with artifacts on TH-cam - so I'm adamant about using Prores. Just can't seem to have my cake and eat it too when it comes to coloring and resolution.
