Getting your first web development job can be nerve-racking because you don't know what you're doing, and you don't know when it will actually happen - 1 week, 1 month .... 3 months?
When dealing with your first client, you have to be sure of a few things to be the sure the web development or design project goes well. Hi Stef, I'm currently enrolled in you IWD course and really enjoying it. Looking forward, once I complete this course I am really considering the Business Battle Plan course. I was curious as to how long the course will take if I spend 30 mins - one hour a day with it.
Hi! The Business Battle Plan course has just under 4hrs of training in video and audio format + mini e-book. You can also listen to the lessons on the go if you download the mp3 files. It includes a mini e-book guide that outlines the main points of the lessons. So, if you spend 30 minutes / day, you can get the BBP done about 8 days.

Congrats on 50k subs Stef, you're honestly my favorite youtuber I consider you as if you're my dad/teacher. I finished your HTML and CSS course and I can create websites now nothing mouth dropping but good websites I want to quit my job to do freelancing any tips?
Thanks! Glad I could help. Freelancing transition tip: be sure you have money in the bank to cover at least a few months expenses before leaving your current job. Slowly work on the side to get clients, so that when you leave your job, you will have several clients in your stable ... there to pay the bills. I think you need to learn a bit more than just HTML & CSS to start freelancing, like Javascript or maybe a back-end language like PHP:)

Hey Stef, I got 2 quick ones for you today:
1.) After you established that first client and he/she started coming back to you for minor tweaks and updates to their project, how did you determine the price for those things? Was it just hourly at that point?
2.) When you refer to the core principles are you referring to the commonalities in all of the high-end languages like strings, ints, loops, etc?

After you build a website/app for someone, they usually become comfortable with hourly.

Those elements, but also best practices, surrounding tech (ex: http, servers, dev tools, client vs server, request / response, stateless nature of the web etc) ... and use-case scenarios like why you use int or string, when and why functions/methods are used.
... A bunch of things you pick up as a developer. I just expose students to these concepts in the foundation training because it really helps students to learn much more quickly.

Thank you for this. Question... How do we best use the Project portion of the Studio Web Course Package? Really enjoying learning the solid foundation I was missing.
Once you've finished the foundation courses (glad you like them,) do the projects in this order:
1. Form validation with PHP and JavaScript
2. Crud Basics with MySQLi and PHP
3. PHP tag cloud (for fun!)
4. Simple PHP logIn system
5. PHP login with OOP and MVC
.. Then you can tackle any of the bigger projects, like the Paypal shopping cart or the wordpress themes. The idea of the projects is to slowly increase the complexity of the projects and to see how things can be created at basic level ... gradually getting more complex.
Honestly, once you've done the first 5, you will be able to do ANY tutorial on YT on any developer subject ... just about. Like the old parable, teach a man to fish, and feed them for life. You are learning how to catch boatloads of tasty coders tuna! ;)

Hey Stef great video. I'm a strong believer of learning fundamentals and i agree 100% when you say that as well. But I'm a beginner web developer and guess what i somehow ended up learning Vuejs before javascript. I can make great dynamic and functional websites with vuejs but i feel guilty, i feel like I'm cheating by not learning javascript. My c++ is strong which is the only reason i found web programming easy. Should i keep going with Vuejs and learn javascript later on? Or should javascript be my first priority?
Can you do a video on site maintenance and code refactoring?

Hi Stefan, i have come across some of your videos and I've found them very useful. I just wanted to get your thoughts on how i should proceed with my web development career. I had studied web development and graduated with a diploma back in 2004 but it never took off for me, i ended up falling into a different career but now i am thinking of giving it another try. Do you think taking another course is wise or just brush up on a few tutorials?
Is it necessary to call or have a video chat with a client? Or can I offer them my services through chat or email?

Interesting story, Stef. You mention the importance of fundamentals, but concretely, what do you consider to be the fundamentals of programming?
He considers the fundamentals of coding the fundamentals of the coding languages.
In Python for example, you can learn specific frameworks like Django, Matplotlib, pandas, Flask, etc.
But if you don't know:
1. What a variable is
2. What different data types there are and what they look like
3. Math operators
4. How to define a function
5. How to create a class, and what attributes & methods are
6. How to write comments
7. How to use a for & while loop
8. What decorators are
9. How to create and import modules and packages (& what the differences are)
10. How to get help with an object or function
you're going to have a much harder time learning new frameworks and writing good code because it can be flawed at a fundamental level.
Each programming language has its own fundamentals, and there are general programming fundamentals, like writing clean code for instance.
Dam, in the 90s it was the paradise. CSS\HTML was basic. Javascript was just a nice bonus. Anyone was in need of a website! Please correct me if I am wrong.
Yes and no. The problem was that it took a lot more work to get anything done with HTML ... and CSS ... it didn't work at all or barely.
We also had to create different versions of websites, so that they worked with the major browsers. There were different strategies, but I preferred using server side programming to sniff out which browser people where using, and then would render the page so that it worked for their browser.
... Now that I think about it, it's MUCH easier now!! :)

Would you recommend going into machine learning instead of web development. I feel like i already know everything about making websites. I had fun making and e-commerce website that was never used and i built it for free( this was last year I didn't watch you at the time). And i already have an unfinished social network (it's missing the comments section) but now i feel like it's boring

hafid smail You can be a front-end developer knowing just javascript, but you also will need another skills like design(with photoshop for example).

Im pretty sure web designers are gonna be jobless very soon thanks to companys like Wix and Yahoo site builder people don't need to hire a coder .
I disagree. Wix and other web builders have been around for years. They are getting better but they are still limited. Web professionals just have to shift their focus.
in the the 90s there was no upwork to compete with cheap Indians and Filipinos who are willing to do a $200 job for $5.what's your solution for that?
