I did web development back in 97-99 and from there I went into consulting and had a blast, worked many markets did so much money, then health hit the fan and for 5 years I hadn't been able to work in the tech market due to health reasons, last year I tried to soak up as much in HTML/CSS/JS/Bootstrap/Wordpress/PHP/MySQL for kicks and now have a contract gig with one customer and you are right people are searching. If a disabled person like me can do it... anyone that can apply him/herself can do it. On the same subject, it is amazing what poor quality some "professional developers" are putting out there. It baffles me comparing to the 90's and just how effin hard it was just do something simple and today in a "Lego" world (lets face it, front end development is putting "blocks" together) that such crap is out there. This has made me want to continue learning the core basics of other frameworks and languages. Great video good sir!
I've got WordPress down cold. I also work professionally as a MEAN developer, so apps are also within reach. My question is less about the hard skills and more about sourcing quality clients and how much to charge. What are your views on that?
Angularjs is outdated. It's now just Angular and quite different from its predecessor. And one would either learn Angular (framework) or React or Vue, not all, initially. The latest version of Ecma Script is important to learn. It's a higher level of JavaScript and needed for Angular.
Michele Moneywell Most of angular jobs are for angular 1; it does not matter whether its new or old; asp.net is old too but its a major tech if you want to work with big business.

Totally off topic but, has anyone ever told you you act and talk exactly like Saul Goodman from 'better call saul'? I like your style man, keep it up :)
LOL! I get compared to so many actors: Mads Mikkelsen, Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, Robert DeNiro, Nicolas Cage ... and others. It's weird ... I guess people on different parts of the face.
IMO is slightly Cage (mostly in some looks/expression) but with the style/quietness/expressions(at some points) of Al Pacino. I don't see there Keanu... Then, in less percentage, DeNiro, yep, in the way he talks at some specific moments/points (and again, in specific film roles, or interviews). :). at some point in some film scene, even Tommy lee Jones... Some video endings slightly remind me of how Hitchcock ended his short chapters series :D. Also, kind of seems he thinks - surely rightly so- that nerds don't get outside enough, so he carries them in the boat for a bit (after all, who among us has a boat to enjoy that...not me, so is appreciated, haha). haven't seen that done by other ppl, quite original :D EDIT: if the man talked exactly as one of those, would be a pity, everyone has own's special "voice", so to speak.
Interesting topic for discussion man. Really opened my eyes about how other people feel when they look into going freelance. Cause that's what I wanna do.
I keep seeing that web developers are in demand, but I seem to really struggle just trying to find open positions. My local area suck for good web dev jobs so I need to look for remote job. Where can I find them?
Stef... Please be specific. I like PHP and WordPress stuff. How specifically would I know I'm considered a good developer? Everyone studies the same things; how do you know someone is Good? What, specifically, is a bad developer?
busyrand if you know the syntax, data structures, algorithms, OOP basics and MVC patterns then you know more than enough to learn most languages. These are what make good developers because this knowledge is transferable to all languages so when you switch you dont need to learn these again you just need to learn the new syntax thata all
Love your channel, Stef, and consider the money I spent on your training extremely good value. But how do we square the message in this vid with a bazillion developers on Upwork, Freelancer etc and the horror stories of grinding out sites for an effective hourly of about $5 (even assuming they find work in the first place)? Thanks again for all that you share here. Good stuff.
Thank you Coach Steph! I incested in the program. Would you consider putting one together to train and teach how to prospect, sell, close and generate business as a developer?
Can you make a video about what EXACTLY do people need to be competent. I don't know Laravel. And I can't do animations unless i have bootstrap. My design skills are no that poor but I can't do animations
Using bootstrap for animations is fine. If you know your core (web stack), then you can get your first job, and build from there. I will be putting out a video on that soon.
+Ross Geography, I used to say that earning $300/hr as a freelance web developer was "impossible" -- until I saw it happen. Now I'm busy trying to hone my skills to get to that level. I'm lucky that with every new contract gig I take, my per hour rate has been going up and up and up from when I started four years ago. A big part of the reason why isn't necessarily that I have become more skilled at what I do (although I like to think that I am) but mainly because I started ASKING FOR MORE MONEY each time. And 99% of the time, they give it to me! That is why I am so happy that in New York State, it is no longer allowed for employers to ask for your salary history :) I can't remember where I read it but it is so true: "We never get what we deserve; we only get what we negotiate for."
My guess is that these guys are very proficient I. Their development. They bill a set price for the whole project, rather than an hourly rate. If they finish the project quickly, then that fee divided by the hours they actually spent, works out to a high value.
I'm a Django dev Stef, and want to Freelance. Although I've stumbled into a couple jobs for local businesses I haven't advertised at all because I'm unsure about where/how to advertise myself. Any advice? Facebook? Yellow Pages? My own site? I'm great at learning the technology, just not how to get myself started. Advice?
Hey Stef! As a language agnostic developer, what do you think about the Go programming language? What kinds of use cases/problems is it good to solve? Would you use it, or have you used it before? Would love to watch a video about Go! Thanks! Love your channel dude!
For freelance, PHP all the way. Once you learn your core programming in one language, if you decide to switch later on, it will be easy. That's why I've written commercial code in 9 languages over the years.
Stefan Mischook what gadgets do you use for your youtube channel, you r videos are exceptionally clear and I want to start myself. Please get back to me if you ever read this. You are awesome btw
Great video Stefan. I've been programming for over 20 years now, and focusing on WP for the last 8 or so. I've been getting clients through word of mouth, but any suggestions on how to scale that up? I still work a 9-5 but would love to get to the point where the freelance provides for my fulltime income.
genesisfan72 idk make an open source wordpress plugin that is unique and will draw attention to you. That way people will know about you and look at what you do and maybe ask you for other things they may want
Started last year (though I've known HTML since the 90's), working with my 2nd paid client ever, and several free clients to start 2018 off. All websites in WordPress, learning PHP as I hack up templates, and still learning JavaScript and Python on the side. Thank you so much for your videos and guidance. After months of videos, tutorials, and slaving away at code, I finally feel some confidence in what I'm doing. I'm just not sure what to charge though, at my current level. Do you have any advice on what to charge as someone like me, confident but still fairly new, and how quickly I should increase my rates? Thank you so much again, love your videos!
+ZoommaiR quite honestly I believe that as soon as one has five sites up and running on the web, one should not be afraid to up their hourly rates by at least $10 an hour. Don't let your "lack of confidence" prevent you from increasing your rate. The more sites you do, the more "confident" you will get, and the more money you deserve to make, especially if you are producing quality work. Some people may even think I'm being too conservative about that and that you should ask for more than a $10/hr increment, but do what feels comfortable for you.
I think wordpress has a rest api you can plugin to other frameworks like django, but I'm not sure how much they let you customise as i have never used wordpress as a headless cms

However, when everyone is learning the cool stuff, what happens when someone needs a php developer? As a new dev trying to break into the field, it may be a way to gain some experience and find an opportunity to go with PHP (or so it seems). Thoughts on this?
charging 50/hr as a beginner is more of a hustle than a legit option. but maybe it would be possible if you target wealthy university students & offer tutoring, because that you could pull off even if you're only about 10 weeks ahead of the students you tutor?
Hi Stefan, great video. I had a question about beginning to freelance. Is it important to set up as an LLC or become a sole-proprieter business before taking on gigs? What's your recommended process for someone just starting out? Thanks.
Karanveer - IMO go sole trader year1 as you cut your teeth - you'll likely have a number of costs you can offset against year1 profitability so your tax bill won't be too high and it offers more flexibility as you figure out what you enjoy and want to offer - LLC becomes tax efficient once you've worked out your costs (and haven decent processes / workflows in place).
LLC's are important if you are partnering, so as to limit your liability with regards to what you partner may do. LLC can help protect you from legal liabilities, but I am not sure how legally vulnerable you would be as a web developer. Owning a restaurant would be a different thing ... someone might choke on some food or something. I would suggest starting out with a simple sole proprietorship (much cheaper and easier to start) and when there is a tax advantage to opening an LLC ... do it then. Ask an accountant for the number as it varies depending on where you live. Makes sense? Shameless plug: my business course will give you loads of information: www.killersites.com/community/index.php?/store/product/1-business-battle-plan-premium-subscription/ ... It is about 96% complete but you can get it now. It has about 2hrs of video.
Nope. You just need to learn the webstack (with some PHP,) Wordpress basics and theme. We teach all that in my fullstack course: shop.killervideostore.com/
I have learned html, css, javascript etc. And all latest web tecs. For past 4 months i am trying to get a job in freelancing but not a single client yet. At freelancer.com i have done countless no. Of bidding but never got selected. At upwork i created my profile but they are not approving my profile giving a stupid reason that there are many other people with same skills so we cant approve your profile yet. Wtf. How do u come up with this that web developer are going to do good in 2018 ????
anvin ps html, css, javascript, jquery, bootstrap, psd to html, gulp, webpack etc. And i have also learned react.js but i m not good at it still learning. There r 2 possibilities either i am right that freelancing is not good anymore or i am missing something and need to learn freelancing.
Sushmit.... bidding sites, not my cup of tea. Probably NEITHER a place to start. Speaks to you an old fart that wears and did so in the past, many hats. I have now freelancing as an easy thing to get, tho mostly for graphics works, Easy to get clients. And still, freaking uber hard to get any clients at all at bidding sites. Remember those sites, like most things, have its paths, its ways. You need to earn first a reputation (and without gigs done, u don't get jobs assigned, a vicious circle). I'm not sure, but i'd be to bet a lot did very pro bono work , super cheap almost free work. Or ppl having a very strong portfolio to show, big clients, or just numerous ones, published content *OUTSIDE those bidding sites*, first, those have it surely easy to get the projects there. If like me, you are a freelancer that touched many fields, and in my case (well, not my case: you are starting and yet have no clients. is not about a number of clients, only, is an organic learning on how to get new clients, and how to maintain them. U'll get it), don't need really promo as work for word of mouth, then bidders in those places dont trust you. They go for , IMO, the reputation and stars in those sites, and almost as importantly, published portfolio of very extensive kind. If the other thing ur trying is stock sites, uploading graphics there, you can avoid another big deception which either is not your fault. the trick in those is also KNOW the place, it has its tricks. My recommendation is avoid those two kind of things for now, go for the word of mouth, personal networking, loose the fear (we all started not knowing sh1t, but almost nooone recognizes it ) do some work not free but affordable for customers as they can trade lack of expertise for lower price, in quite some cases. You wont get lack of clients for training, as you can even do volunteer work for some organization, small or big, and funny enough companies DO value that (personal values are considered too!). My best advice: go for friends, neighbors, people u know u can trust as persons in general, do work for 'em. If some not pay or pays late: remember, now the key is getting work done, portfolio done. So don't get mad at that. For now. You need an online portfolio, live sites. Do not get into any conclusions about your future from the results on biding sites or stock art depots. Go for building a personal network. You do this one by one. Take at first one client at a time, several only if you are super fast, which I doubt , at start. Do leave a good mark and do solid sites. Go building ur portfolio, doesn't matter what are the sites about, anyone with a business might need a site. U need portfolio in this, however you can get it. Is essential for literally ANY other next step. Don't let your self down with an impossible almost step for a beguinner like it is any bidding site or stock depot site. PD: I've done some stuff in those places is NOT impossible, but I DO NOT rely on that other than sth i send a proposal from very time to time in things I really am interested on and where I very specially shine, and in some occasions, I get a proposal accepted, do my work and finish the stuff. Again, not my recommendation for a beginner, probably neither for an advanced. Also, somehow the hour is quite depreciated in those sites, as well as your work. At least it is for a large portion of the designers. Not for the ones at the top, those do pretty well, indeed. Hope it helps !
Hey Stefan. What are your thoughts on the Sketch plugins that allow users to pretty much drag and drop their own site and then export it as HTML & CSS?
I haven't seen them ... but will check them out. But even if they are great, there is still so much more to do outside of the site design! Just making a site look good, is just the start of even the just the front-end of web development. Consider it a potential tool.
Surprising to hear this considering how many kids are pouring into web dev. these days. It certainly doesn't speak well for these kids if they're flooding the market. Yet businesses still can't find decent enough developers to hire.
"well trained" is pretty vague. It's hard to know exactly what you're talking about. Do you happen to have any specifics? For example: -Their code is too messy and unorganized. And thus too hard to manage. -Their code is too fragile and it breaks if the users do something unexpected. -They're using too many syntactic sugar options. So the code ends up looking like pot luck. Specific things like that. "well trained" can mean anything.
For web development, you need HTML5 no matter what. PHP is a great choice for small medium type work and freelancing. My course package teaches all that: shop.killervideostore.com/
I love this video, but all I read is the field is flooded. No jobs for web, programming, software people. Too many outside America filling ALL computer jobs. American computer graduates can't find jobs.

And not Ruby. haha
I've got WordPress down cold. I also work professionally as a MEAN developer, so apps are also within reach. My question is less about the hard skills and more about sourcing quality clients and how much to charge. What are your views on that?
THE MOST IN DEMAND FREELANCE SKILLS (WEB DEVELOPMENT):
1. Web design (css, html, jquery, bootstrap).
2. Wordpress
3. PHP (laravel, symfony, vanilla).
4. Angularjs
5. React
Vue(2) is sexy too!
It is but jobs are not there yet; its growing though.
Angularjs is outdated. It's now just Angular and quite different from its predecessor. And one would either learn Angular (framework) or React or Vue, not all, initially. The latest version of Ecma Script is important to learn. It's a higher level of JavaScript and needed for Angular.

like Vue's ruby-like terse syntax (nice fit with Laravel I think)

Sure. Modern web frameworks like Meteor, Symfony etc ... allow you to rapidly create websites and web apps.

This is not the case in Europe. Here any Chief technology officer makes 20K$ Wordpress sites in couple hours.

I would suggest starting out with a simple sole proprietorship (much cheaper and easier to start) and when there is a tax advantage to opening an LLC ... do it then. Ask an accountant for the number as it varies depending on where you live. Makes sense?
Shameless plug: my business course will give you loads of information: www.killersites.com/community/index.php?/store/product/1-business-battle-plan-premium-subscription/
... It is about 96% complete but you can get it now. It has about 2hrs of video.
Thanks! I'll definitely take a look at your course
Do i need to learn how to make plugins for WordPress before I start my own web development firm?
Nope. You just need to learn the webstack (with some PHP,) Wordpress basics and theme. We teach all that in my fullstack course: shop.killervideostore.com/
Okay im going to take it...Are you sure I won't need to know laravel before I start my business
I'm a freelancer who has been failing at web development for 10 years
hmm ... probably need to work on social / communication skills.
Face to face works better
anvin ps html, css, javascript, jquery, bootstrap, psd to html, gulp, webpack etc. And i have also learned react.js but i m not good at it still learning. There r 2 possibilities either i am right that freelancing is not good anymore or i am missing something and need to learn freelancing.
Lidoptics i do have project to show bro. I used to mention it whenever i bid on job.
Sushmit.... bidding sites, not my cup of tea.
Thank you, so usefull :)
There is a lot of work for well trained web developers.
"well trained" is pretty vague. It's hard to know exactly what you're talking about.
Do you happen to have any specifics?
For example:
-Their code is too messy and unorganized. And thus too hard to manage.
-Their code is too fragile and it breaks if the users do something unexpected.
-They're using too many syntactic sugar options. So the code ends up looking like pot luck.
Specific things like that.
"well trained" can mean anything.
You hit a few key points! Any of my students will fall under that category of well trained. :) Perhaps I will do a vlog on that particular subject.
Hey do anyone working as a web developer have ideas on how to get such clients
The powerful blueprint: school.studioweb.com/store/course/complete_freelancer

Hi Steph, I would be interested in your opinions about Elon Musk. Thanks :)
Only special printers can print money, pretty fast :)
would it be better to learn html5 or PHP for web development
For web development, you need HTML5 no matter what. PHP is a great choice for small medium type work and freelancing. My course package teaches all that: shop.killervideostore.com/

I love this video, but all I read is the field is flooded. No jobs for web, programming, software people. Too many outside America filling ALL computer jobs. American computer graduates can't find jobs.
