Pc level chip? Depends what build you're after problem is more compute requires power size and weight to get to current level pc you'll need a back pack, for example even a gtx 1660 has 5.5 teraflops and that struggles with vr and it has double the power of the xr2 gen2 that has 2.5 tflops.
Also bare in mind that the 1660 may have 6gb of vram but that paired with dedicated d-ram of the users choose usually around 16 gb d-ram .
Where as the xr2 gen 2 will utilise the on board ram on the quest 3 as both dram and vram meaning it's has 8 gb to share between the both. Meaning that the 6 gb of dedicated video memory is far superior and faster than that of the quest 3. Basically it will take a while for it to even match.
even the avp could only real up to 3.5 teraflops now it had double the ram of the q3 at 16 but still it shared that memory between d-ram and v-ram.
Where as the theoretical pc in this example has 5.5 tflops 6 gb of vram and let's 16 gb so that's 22 gb of ram (yes I understand it's different) and the build would be cheaper than the avp even with 3 quest 3s so you have 2 as a spare.

"for example even a gtx 1660 has 5.5 teraflops and that struggles with vr and it has double the power of the xr2 gen2 that has 2.5 tflops"
With true foveated rendering through eye tracking you can reduce the compute to mostly just the sharp, foveal area of your field of view, which is much smaller than people realise, less than 10% of each eyes retina.
That's not to say that you get 10x perf for the same hardware, but it's certainly a drastic improvement for simply adding eye tracking sensors to the headset.
Add in recent super resolution scalers + time/space warp + variable rate shading and you can squeeze a lot out of relatively low end hardware.
Add in puck type solutions with decoupled compute/battery, and the fact that AMD are finally turning up the heat with a 40 CU APU with Strix Halo/Ryzen Max and there is serious potential for 'standalone' VR going forward - even if it needs to run a cable down from your head to power itself (which will both make the headset lighter on your head and potentially increase the possible battery size).

A cautionary tale for current and prospective Meta Quest VR headset owners (for sim'ing or gaming):
I'm on day 22 of Meta holding my Quest headsets hostage. I've been using Oculus/Quest devices from the day they started making them (10 years ago?), and I have not been required to give my date of birth to Meta in all this time. But they recently demanded my DOB under threat of disabling my Quests, and they made good on that threat 22 days ago. Meta can metaphorically brick your headsets, any time they want, and for any reason they want, and you will have no defense against it.
Conclusion: Think carefully before you BUY anything from Meta; The thing you BUY will not be yours.

It would be awesome if all the major tech companies came together to figure out the AR Glasses issue. Make it a group development research project. Not to be used for financial gain on the original product they develop. That they could make spin offs of the original project they actually make through the join effort research. But They won't. Sometimes a join effort is needed in order to push and break through boundaries. I don't think one individual company can figure out the AR glasses issue. Look at Google Glass for example.
Edit: My Dream VR Headset is the Bigscreem VR Headset size with apple passthrough and quest 3rd party app support. Software would be Steam compatibility and Meta OS base. Tracking would actually be base station + base station less tracking. The ability to remote play and then come back into a space with base stations with 360 precision tracking would be epic.

We need to expand functionality, not just performance capability. The Meta Touch Pro controllers need an additional pass, we need something closer to valves index controllers and thier hand tracking alongside the self tracking capabilities of the touch pro, to really give us a better way to interact in the VR space with these headsets. Even just refining the current touch pro controllers would be a huge step forward.
I know what I want is likely going to be expensive overall, but we need to catch these standalone headsets up to some of the features that have been almost exclusive to PCVR lighthouse based tracking setups. I want the eye and face tracking, I want full body tracking, and I want the controllers to not always need to be in the vision of the headset to work. I am more concerned about these things than I am about having a more powerful or wider field of view than what's already in the Quest 3. And I dont want to have to sacrifice the freedom the Quest platform's standalone nature has provided me. Because I can setup my laptop anywhere and play PCVR using the quest, or I can go to my room and hookup to my desktop and crank the settings, and I dont need to drag lighthouses and a bunch of cables around to do so.

Meta feels like it’s moving like Apple, you won’t upgrade until 2-3 years after the technology you buy… Quest 2 was a major upgrade from Quest 1 but Quest 3 felt like a little jump from Quest 2. I’m waiting for Quest 4 till I upgrade.

    • @tytyguy1able

Idk the Quest 2 for me was totally unusable due to its limited IPD adjustment and feels SIGNIFICANTLY less solid than the 3 does. The 3s may be an incremental upgrade from the 2 but the regular Quest 3 feels like a whole other HMD and is damn close to my Valve Index.

in my opinion, going down the multiple device route is terrible long term. you end up with tens of older models of devices that aren't compatible because every new headset is "better" take Nintendo and the Wii U. or, any old console of theirs. once the new quest 4 is out, the quest 3 will seem like a bad buy, and so on. Make one headset every 5-10 years. ones that can perform at a good level for that time frame. I don't want to buy the quest 3, because i know the quest 4 will be better. but then i wont buy the quest 4, because the 5 will be even better. its an endless loop of losing money because they just can't slow themselves down, they need that funding.

Quest 2 Pro is officially dead. Even the Quest Pro is now discontinued, and the reason is nobody will spend over a grand on a headset, as VR is still a nesh market. With the introduction of the Quest 3S, at a lower price point of the Quest 3, Meta would be better focusing on driving the Quest 3 price down, and stop with half bakes that they think fits. They have also now dropped the 128GB Quest 3 in order to roll out the Quest 3S, as the price point was so close to one another. If you ask me, they would have done a better job keeping this model on and binned the Quest 3S before it became an idea. The Quest 3S is over a year later than the Quest 3, and anyone buying in the Quest 3 will already have the 2023 models.
