    After almost 40 years of not playing drums and trying again my wife bought me a beautiful gretsch set for my birthday it's like starting over again it's not like getting on a bike and riding after you than off a bike for some years. Rob has the discipline and determination to help everybody who wants to play this instrument I Am very grateful to him and thank him and will continue watching him for inspiration and help Because as you get older you're not as agile as you used to be. I'm in my sixties and I want to play drums again and I am not going to let anything get in my way Thanks Rob

    Hey Rob! I've been doing this exercise for years, and it really helped me a lot. That's why I was so excited when I saw you teaching it on this video. Now, what I did with the first half (single strokes) of the exercise is I broke it down to 4 parts:
    1 measure of single strokes
    1 measure of double strokes
    1 measure of single strokes
    1 measure of inverted double strokes... Then to the pattern.
    Again, props to you BeatDown Brown!

      I do something similar. The rudiment on my hands while playing it half time with my feet. Rlrl rlrl (as 16ths) along with r l r l(as1/8ths). I straighten out to just a half time rlrl when playing the syncopated part. This is fun once you get to the paradiddles!

    • @davidlean1060
      @davidlean1060 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Cheryl Graham Basically, take the first 5 exrecises in Stick control (includes single stroke right and then left lead and the the same with double strokes). When playing the right lead double stroke ie rr ll, play a rr ll half time with the feet. Basically, it is a variation on simon Phillips exercise where he plays a paradiddle in his hands and plays one half time with his feet at the same time. Change to a regular rl with the feet when playing the syncopated bit. I always like to use my feet while exerciseing my hands, so I am always looking for easy ways to keep them occupied while I practice my rudimants with my hands.

    Being a physical therapist and a drummer , I love that you are talking about posture. During your rudiments, try not to keep the forward head posture for too long looking down at the snare drum. This will strain the back of your neck and cause you to slump sit and strain your low back. Use your peripheral vision and tuck your chin to look at your hands. Thanks for all your hard work and education, keep it it up.

    I experienced a similar situation in my late 50s. Hadn't played drums for 30 years, picked up a friends copy of Modern Drummer and decided to try playing again. Went nuts and bought a high end Mapex kit and started practicing. Down to a small 5 piece Yamaha kit now and still struggling to improve. Found Rob's website a few years ago and have been a follower ever since. Really tough to learn new things as you age but at least Rob makes it easy to comprehend. Love his no bull approach, sense of humour and his obvious love for what he does.

    Love your stuff. Any chance you can do something on counting - not the same as timekeeping per se, but simply counting in your head while playing, as the 'noise' can get loud in my head. In particular, between 4-and & 1 I sometimes lose it, particularly with a fill. And yet this is where groove starts. My favourite drummer is Simon Phillips (Rob, you're no.1 educator by far) , who if you watch closely is always counting, and when it's 33/8 you know it's a skill that needs nailing.

    Thanks, bro. I grew up on the drumline and I remember everyone wanted to be a drummer. They thought it was easy. And as we got older, I had all kinds of friends who grew up playing wind instruments who got themselves a kit and tried to become drummers. They thought their musical knowledge translated. It would be like me picking up a trumpet and knowing the fingerings of notes without developing the chops of your lips. You can't. All those hours and hours playing rudiments made you crazy as a youngster but you develop stick control and that is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT skill a drummer has to have. And as you said in the video, you literally can build any grove up from just those 3 rudiments (singles, doubles, paradiddles). If you want to become a better drummer you only need four things. Sticks, a practice pad, a metronome, and a copy of "Stick Control". Run the drills till you can't anymore. Then do them again. Keep up the great work. And thanks for being an educator first. The kids see a "cool guy" like you and they think "I wanna play like Rob". It's extremely helpful to young drummers to hear an awesome drummer with great skills tell young drummers "You have to spend hours and hours running fundamentals and rudiments if you want to get better".

I can already feel how much this is going to help because I know what I need to do, but my brain isn't working right yet.

    Thanks for this, Rob. One of my goals for this year is to become a better drummer. Part of my plan to execute this goal is to commit to a daily rudiment routine, which I've never really done.
    I followed your advice from your previous video to focus solely on the single, double, and paradiddle. But I've struggled to put any real structure around it and I need something to keep it interesting. Hopefully, this does the trick.
    Just curious, what metronome app are you using?

    I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel. Played for about 21 hours per week when I first started at 16 for about a year and a half, then didn't pick it up again for about a decade. Lost a lot of speed in that time, but noticed I had bad habits to get that speed. Got a set a couple of years ago, but again started with the bad habits. I definitely wish I had a teacher like you back then. Currently working on your intermediate practices. I really like that these exercises have made me actually want to practice the right way. I will definitely be introducing these exercises to my daughter, who loves to play the drums, but just has the worst chops right now. She is 6 and has autism, so hopefully drums will be an outlet for her to be more expressive beyond words. Thank you for doing this. You gained a new subscriber. Cheers

    Hey man thank you I'm a bass player by default. When I was a kid I asked my Dad for a set of drums but he being a bass told me that I shouldn't play drums because I would way be the last cat to leave the gig. So before he passed on he told my mother to make sure I got his bass so I had to play it. Now moving ahead 32 years and now 61. My wife just got me some drums🤪 I'm out of my mind Its like I just come out of the drum closet Lol. I dig what you just hip me to Thank you Bruh and now I have some hip stuff to practice. Peace and love. Alfonzo.

    Bro, I've been beating on the drums since I was a baby. But I kinda switched to Guitar when I was about 13 and it's been a good ride so far.. Lately, I'm more into studio stuff with my home Project studio and I find myself playing a lot of drums working on demo's and songwriting. It's safe to say, I love recording drums! But you're channel is such a god send. Exactly the type of content I need to make my recordings stronger. It all starts with the drums IMO.. Thanks for what you do man. Since the 150 bpm was too fast for me to follow, as I am still learning, I have been decreasing the playback speed to 75% for the second repetition and do the 120 bpm at normal speed. It’s helping me focus on my sticking better.

    Thank You very much for taking the time to teach. I started out as a kid in a fife and drum corp and did alright. Then later on in my teens and twenties, I played in a small band (if you can call it that). What I recall is that my beat was nearly the same for each song. I also remember being a tense drummer, embarrassing. So, what I want to do at the age of 64 is start from scratch to see if I ever had it in me to be a decent drummer.
    It is clear to me that I never really had a firm foundation to build up from. So with the help of great teachers such as yourself perhaps I can unlearn what does not serve the mission of being a decent player.
    Thank you, for sharing your knowledge and skill.

  • @Jath2112
    @Jath2112 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love these exercises! The longer I have been playing, the more I keep coming back to...singles...doubles....and diddles... almost any time I feel weakness... it is me realizing I made it another few years without having to fit a double on a particular beat with a particular hand...or something similar... it is....always one little adjustment... like getting used to landing on my left hand on the e of 2 or whatever... just some small simple thing I notice I have overlooked... exercises like this really help to rapidly break down the tiny little barriers between your hands and unlock all sorts of things you really can never imagine at first. Do these for ten years... you'll discover things....for ten straight years... simple, but limitless. Cheers man, thanks for sharing your craft!

    • @Jath2112
      @Jath2112 ปีที่แล้ว

      * I will be scouring through your uploads now, but I want to ask: Do you have some similar exercises that you like for flams, and especially for NOT- Flams? Besides singles and doubles and diddles..diddle... it seems like a HUGE key to musical playing is being able to hit things cleanly, simultaneously with control...and flam with intention... A lot of the difference between a beginner and a pro stems from...just... being able to hit two things at the same time consistently

    Oh man, I liked it. Your comment about the guitar made me laugh. I actually play guitar and started as a young teenager. Over years of playing off and on I felt I was missing something in my playing so I took up drums too. I felt I needed some rhythm or beat or timing foundation to my playing and performing. Plus I just had fun learning and stretching out my musical abilities. So I took some lessons and kept adding to my drum set/kit. Then again later in life I let the drums go. Dang. That was a mistake and now watching and listening to you makes me want to take it up again. A few years back I was performing/jamming on stage with guitar and when on stage I made sure I gave the drummer his or her dues to the audience. I told them why is it that the drummer is always hidden in the back and most of the time you can hardly see them. I said that ain’t right! So in a band all the members (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, keyboard, vocals, drummers, etc.) all play varying equal roles. When I was learning the drum rudiments I even taught my wife some basics. At work when she would talk to someone who happened to be a drummer she would tap out a paradiddle on her desk. It would blow them away and impress them. Cool huh? Love you drummers! We need each other. Thanks for the lesson bro!!!!!

    Some extensions I mucked around with that also worked.....
    1. left hand lead
    2. invert the compound rudiment by playing the double first
    3. Flam paradiddles, compound is then flam accent with 1/2 flam paradiddle at the end
    Great lesson Rob Brown, thanks!!
