6 months after incorporating this (introducing accents when playing single strokes, and any rudiment in general) into my practice routine : this improved my playing A TON, even if i don't use accents that much in my playing, because it will dehandicap your weak hand real quick, and also make it easier for you to play stuff on the offbeat. Now most beats/fills are way easier for me because of this. The key is to introduce accents to your exercises, orchestrate around the kit, also do the same but switching left and right hands, etc. And then you will also start to hear accents in many beats and be able to play them better (even if in reality you don't end up using lots of dynamic and just do full power all the time). MASSIVE THANKS TO ROB (once again, learnt so much from you and improved so much thanks to you already in the past) NB : i don't even do this exercise (fast single strokes full speed with accents) this way because i'm not that good yet, and yet doing it slow (and the way described above) already helps a ton. I wish i had realized this sooner and did this sooner when i started playing drums !
Excellent video! I teach this my students. It's called the Grid. "By learning the Grid, you can then place an accent anywhere in the beat." I teach it for sixteenth note patterns and eighth note triplets. I teach them to concentrate on the ghost notes, not the accents. The reason being that "the accents are already there, you just have to play them in tempo." I also progress the lessons as they get more proficient. My natural progression for them are first: Accents, then Flams, then Diddles, and then Cheeses. I also teach them the same Grid sequence, but utilizing Paradiddle patterns, and Swiss Army Triplet patterns, with the same natural progression. Great lesson, Sir!
Dear Rob, I've been practicing this exercise for 9 months. I always tried to play accented singles, but it sucked until recent time... now I'm really better and able to play this stuff around the kit and recommend doing the same exercise to my drummates. You are making incredible contribution to drumming around the world. Keep it up please!! Cheers from Russia
This exercise WORKS. I've made it my own by starting the exercises with my left hand transitioning from left to right, then after about 5 minutes I start the exercise with my right hand and then switche back and forth.
Rob, I'm 52 years old and bought my 11 year old daughter a drum set for Christmas last year. She hasn't yet taken an interest in it. I believe she is a little intimidated by them but, I sure have. I've subscribed to your channel and have been watching your beginner videos and love them. I bought a practice pad and take it to everywhere I go and use your videos to practice. You are definitely making it interesting and fun. I've been struggling with guitar for just over 10 years and decided to dedicate myself to learning drums. Jamming with my friends, I have noticed the drummers are having way more fun! I'm all in to learning to play! Keep posting new stuff. Thanks Rob!
The drums ARE wayyy more fun.. However as a multi user of instruments I implore you to learn to get a basic kick pattern going. Pick up your geetar and play a simple strumming pattern and just see how much more fun that can be. I also play the bass now and the bass is alone so much fucking fun..almost love it more than drums😂
For real! It may be the best video ever on getting your doubles tight! Especially, because of the change up between regular, light, & heavy (full) strokes!
Appreciate the confirmation that my early 1990s marching band exercises weren’t a waste of time after all! This was our starting warmup, followed by the same idea but with each hand independently. Thanks!
Rob Brown is pretty awesome. Relatable, smooth, great humor, knows his s tt and can back it up. His bass drum tuning segment changed my career. Coincided and contributed to bettering my playing and my sound. With ome success. Thanks Downtown 🙏
Within Drumeo there is "Emmanuelle's Beginner Pad Warm-up" which has most of these exercises within it and provides background music and synced sheet music to play along with. You can also adjust the speed. I have found it very helpful.
Thanks Rob! Was on the fence about joining Drumeo. 30 days free and cancel anytime? Yeah, sign me up. Where else can you go and have Simon Phillips as a teacher? Amazing.. Congrats on joining Drumeo family!
This is exactly what my drum teacher, Bob Hogenelst, is making me practice. But then with 16th paradiddles, and counting the quarter notes with the left foot on the hi-hat.
Now, do that same excessive with paradiddles! Nothing makes one’s head explode like the accent on the last note of a paradiddle…but, for us funk drummers that excessive is all but mandatory. GREAT lesson, Rob!
I saw you touch on this before in an older video, but not as in depth. I think it was your video on developing killer hands. I took your advice about leaving practice pads around the house and it's been a game changer, my hands are finally developing noticeably. Playing singles at a fast tempo without accents is something I struggle with. By adding the accents and shifting them around I can get the speed up and maintain it, and it sounds WAY BETTER. Love this new video. You da man Rob.
I’ve been doing this for a year. It’s my favourite exercise and I use it ALL the time. It’s also made a big difference in my playing. Thanks for posting!
Your absolutely right Rob! I use the Stone Accents and Rebounds book and Master Studies but I double up on 32nd notes so it’s like the “Roll Over Beethoven “ snare part.
Flamual had me laughing right of the bat! Coincidentally I’ve been working on this single stroke exercise for several weeks now. 2023 may be looking up. Thanks Flamual!
My man! Got me into proper hand technique, got me into Drumeo, has the best chops and is so very humerous. Love Rob, in a musical way that is. Received my Drumeo pad just after christmas. I didn't get that one though.... I've been conned 😮
Hey Rob, I commented about one or two months ago under another video. I finally started drumming in the end of august. My exercise without my teacher wasn't effektive, so now I decided to start with 30 minutes of paradiddles, double stroke rolls and stuff and THEN playing to music. I will use your video when I go to the rehearsal room later. Thank you so much!
I know it sounds weird, but Mr. Rob Brown. You are the reason that I'm still alive. Thank you for your teaching. Kind regards to you from Mick Sjøholm from Denmark.
New to your channel and loving every minute of it! Trying to get my hands back after 50+ years! Keep doing what you are doing, I'm on it!!!! Thank you so much!!!!👍👍👍😎
LMAO! Flamuel L. Jackson should be the new name for your channel, its just to awesome not to be. I come to learn from a master and not only did I gain some knowledge but I got a good laugh to go with it. Thank you Rob You are the best!🤣
As always thanks Rob. Ive sent many a drummer to your site and got alot of positive response. Your tips have always been my philosopy. Being a basic traditional grip player for years. Starting back in 1962 and now 2023 my cymbals , my toms snare are moved in a way that works for me. Your right as far as doubles. Rob you have been always in logic.practice pad and set. RELAX And constant aware of that. My friends have said this guy is great. Thanks man.
So, I'm sitting in front of the TV with a nice cup of fresh coffee and decided I was going go watch my man Rob on his latest video. Then he throws the "Flamuel L. Jackson bit... Yeah, that was an instant spit take.. Thanks Rob,, spilled coffee everywhere! pffff.. LOL. Love your vids btw ;)
You manage to make videos thorough, but still concise and to the point. I daydream that you one day make a video aimed at beginners trying to transition from heel down to heel up, cause I'm struggling, man. Anyway, thanks for another great video.
Some variations if you're so inclined: 1) Diddle the accents. 2) Flam the accents. 3) Cheese the accents (a flam before the diddle). 4) Turn the accents into a 16th note triplet (a single stroke four is it?) These may or may not be beneficial for your single strokes but they make for a good control workout nonetheless. Just food for thought. Thanks, as always, Rob. Happy 2023.
@@djabthrash I think so! Think of the first sixteenth note (or the first accent of the exercise) as a sixteenth note triplet. That's the best way I can explain it. Thanks.
@paul revelli : when you do the diddled and cheesed accents for this exercise, is the the second note a ghost note or a full stroke ? Or maybe we can practice both i guess ?
I'm really intrigued and honestly want to grab my sticks and my pad and get to work on this lesson now for 12 weeks and just go back and forth from the pad to the kit until it's solid✊🏼
A concept everyone should master (with three accents too). Also good to do 4 counts alternating with a bar of taps as a check pattern. For historical purpose, this exercise was originated by Tom Float for the Oakland Crusaders Drum Corps (Toronto) in 1976 and eventually became the foundation pf the 4-2-1 grid.
Yessir. Thank you once again for a helpful video! One little addition I find helpful, if I may be so bold: do exactly that, but also switch it around to weaker hand lead and practice both ways. It keeps surprising me how physically and mechanically the same thing can sound so much more awkward the "wrong" way around (in my case LH lead), even on a single voice like a pad or snare drum.
For my fellow noobs: Start slow, count out loud, and alternate your leading hand (or foot for that matter). I try to match my feet with my hands and much as possible doing the same exercises - double bass pedal required. Also starting with the metronome off is helpful to get the initial idea down, but you better turn that sucker on eventually. :) Thanks Rob for the wonderful exercise to add to the list, as well as your channel in general. I have been playing for 5+ years now and have been practicing a lot, but I still had to start slow on this one (60bpm). Good stuff!
One exercise to rule them all, and make you realize how bad you still suck after a year and a half of drumming. It's amazing how much harder it is to independently accent two notes in a row vs just one without affecting the other notes. But I'm trying to buckle down and really spend time on the pad. Thanks for all the great content!
" It's amazing how much harder it is to independently accent two notes in a row vs just one without affecting the other notes" Big time... Most times I have to drop like 20 to 30 bpm to able to do 2 consecutive accented notes instead of just 1...
Ive been doing this very exercise for a while now, as a means to develop my flam accents. Flamming the accents is where it's at.. another level. I'm guessing marching drummers eat that for breakfast, but still, it's a phat chop. Oh, and pleased to meet you Flamuel L Jackson, I'm Andia from OnlyFlams ™️ 🤟
I wish I had a teacher like this when I played in high school. I might have kept with it instead of taking 23 years off and just now getting back to playing. These videos are great!
Benny Greb instructed a quite similar approach as well, in his The Language of Drumming DVD, with the notable difference being the number of bars he suggested playing each accent, which was 1 instead of Rob's 2 bar. Greb basically permutes through ALL the accent/ghost combination patterns that could be obtained with 4 16th notes. He also handles the triplet combinations as a separate permutation loop as well. Quite a practical rudiment exercise.
I’d love a walk-through the gear at the back: mixer, mics, DAW…..as someone trying to build a community rehearsal space (as Boston purges all its affordable rehearsal spaces)….
Great stuff, Rob! I've been working on this workout for a while but not consistently. I like the idea of a 12 week run with daily sessions focusing on this. I see progress in the future!
Man! More people should talk about Benny Greb’s drumming alphabet. Helps with hand technique so mutch and it is essy to understand&apply. The same things that you are talking about, just so mutch more examples of patterns and accents.
Love your content without a doubt. I apologize if you don't get your share because at 1:14 seconds I get a 3:32 second add that's 1/2! They want me to watch 2 adds and the 1st one is over 3-1/2 minutes?! Had to skip adds, my drum pad needs exercise while you got me goin!! P.S. this is the 1st comment I've ever left on youtube, but I feel that you deserve an explanation for all of our lacking in the support department. YOU ARE THE MAN!
Mr. Brown, it’s pretty much the permutation practice, that allows us to think of many different accent patterns within the realm of single stroke roll, isn’t it?
Good stuff. Know your 1-e-&-a's like breathing. Ron calls the "&" the "train". In the dirty back-beat world, I'd call the "e" the "upside your head" (because it's right after the beat) and the "a" the "kick in your butt" (because it's right before the beat).
Flamuel (AKA Rob Brown) , so glad to see your videos again. This makes the New Year bright !! You are the best on the Interweb ! Your Instructions are superior and delivered in a very Cool manner [Even my wife was laughing while watching Thumpification video - especailly when You dropped the bass drum in extacy!) I'm a 71 YO, retired MAN (yes, a Man), who plays drums as a recreation - about 1 hour a day to my music. I returned to playing after 50 YEARS [1969]. Back then, I knew Nothing of Drum Heads and Drum Tuning . I do now - learning from you and some others at Drumeo and elsewhere. Unrelated to this topic, I ask your opinion about a "weird" thing. I have a DW Design Series Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare drum purchased Used in 2021. It was an additional snare to my PDP Concept Maple 6 drum kit with a 14 X 5.5 Snare. The DW came delivered with a HD dry batter head and the drum was Cranked high. I really liked the sound out of the delivery box. A few weeks ago, I replaced the HD Dry head with anew one, re-installed the standard clear Reso head and wires. No matter how I tweaked the tuning, I couldn't get to that same sound. Last week, in frustration, I placed the DW on my 16 inch Floor Tom and played the PDP snare during my playing. While playing a fill, I hit the DW snare atop of the Tom. Bingo.....the sound wa music to my ears. Ludwig Suprphonic - Jon Bonham sound! Take it off the Tom, it was not the same? In fact, placing the PDP snare atop of the Floor Tom, enhanced that sound too! I've posted this everywhere - seeking answers as to WTF is happening & why? One poster said that I was actually playing two drums simultaneously, the snare was recognizing the resonance from the Tom working together. He recommended changing the Batter head form a HD Dry. Another Poster kiddingly said that I may have Invented a New Snare Stand!. I tried a new UV 1 batter head on the PDP snare - didn't like the high degree of overtone / ringing to my ear. Any Ideas as to what is happening? THX ... The DRUMEO App with Music Manipulation seems very interesting but a bit too expensive for me as NON Gigging drummer. Wonder if they have a similar Lite Version?
I've been playing in a post-punk band lately, and it requires a LOT of single stroke discipline. So what do I do, just google "Rob Brown Single Stroke" and get my exercises heh. I have a private instructor as well, which is amazing for fine tuning, or seeing any ergonomic mistakes, or even discussing drum philosophy. But the Rob Brown exercises have been just as essential in my development. It's unreal how much my drumming has changed, and improved, since finding this channel.

Thanks for teaching the drum community 🙏🏻
As always, thank you Rob. Picking right now as my start day so I’ll check back in Apr 6!
Best teacher, always on point informative vids ❤
Wow. You are a great teacher. So happy I found you. Awesome.
Mr. Brown, it’s pretty much the permutation practice, that allows us to think of many different accent patterns within the realm of single stroke roll, isn’t it?
Great start to 2023 Rob thank you‼️Not sight reading is quite an admission. Respect✌️as always🌻
OH thank you sooo much!!! I need this video!
Hi Rob! Could you please make a video covering on feet exerscises, cos its also important for all of the drummers(no matter what level).
Do the feet same as the hands.
I love those drumsticks where did you get them
I downloaded the sheet music, now I can follow it...thks so much for putting that in there, or I wouldnt be able to follow u..Thks
Great exercises for single strokes!! I need to get me one of those Drumeo multipads...
Thankyou Rob !! going to apply this one faithfully
I’ll hold you to that ! Thanks 🙏🏿
Try the same thing but playing a paradiddle instead and a bass drum note on the sixteenth note after the accents!
Been looking for a good singles exercise. Thanks!
Great exercise, been enjoying your demonstrations, all great stuff🥁!!👍
Excellent lesson Rob!
