To everyone struggling with this, STICK TO IT! 3-5 times a week. Did it for a couple months straight, couldn’t do it at the start, now it’s very easy and boring to me 😂 dont stop practicing until it gets boring
This is a fantastic daily workout, now part of my daily ritual. Tip: I found that setting the video play back to .75 speed allowed me to run through the entire routine (ie all speeds) without stopping. Obviously I will be working towards achieving it all at normal speed once the flow for each section is smooth as butter. I can not thank ABB more for this and she’s subsequent videos. Cheers, Peter in the U.K.
This is the best drum pad practice video on TH-cam. Austin, please make another with different patterns and rudiments. Playing along with you doing multiple reps at different speeds is my favorite way to practice.
This is a mandatory DAILY workout for anyone who considers themselves a drummer... It's 40 mins, SO doable daily--bring your practice pad to work, get 15-20 mins of it done after eating your food on a typical 30 min lunch break, and finish the rest at home. Commit to this for a month, and there will be a night a day difference!! Now... Lemme just follow my own advice...........
I’m going through this like a perfectionist run on a game. Have to get hit for hit, no rush and drag and only unlock the next exercise/speed if I do all 3 tempos flawlessly. Can’t wait to get through the whole vid so I can have this as a daily dust buster. I’m grateful there’s people like you in the world, AB. You’re really doing this for the love of it and it’s an honour to share your work and fruit of your labours. Well wishes from Australia.
My teacher often used to tell me "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good." when my inner perfectionist would start acting up like this, haha! I totally get you, but he was right in the end because by choosing to only practice and master one thing at a time, I wouldn't be reaping any of the benefits from the rest of the exercises and thus my plan only served to SLOW DOWN my progress :p But hey dude we're all different and if that works for you, then rock on! :)
I've been working this for about three weeks now. Couldn't sustain the max tempos except for only one or two exercises at first, but I'm officially playing all the way through now!! So thankful for this workout, it's helped me feel more comfortable and confident in my playing! Marching snare/drumset player
AUSTIN BURCHAM IS A BEAST! I’ve taken all of Austin’s advice and used his tutorials and product reviews as inspiration to get better as a drummer and a teacher. He’s even motivated me to uplift my lesson/drum cover channel. I feel like my covers and tutorials have gotten better just by subscribing to Austin’s channel. I'd love any feedback/subscriber support from my fellow drummers. Keep rockin’!
Been learning all these for the last couple months....my hand speed, accuracy and controlhas increased DRAMATICALLY I will literally be playing these at 180 bpm and look down and laugh because I cant believe my hands are doing that lol...
It’s taken me several years, periods of doing this every day, then time spent on other materials, periods of doing it on .75x speed, even .50x speed, endless examining of my technique and making adjustments but I’m finally at a point where I can play through this whole thing with close to perfect accuracy and staying relaxed. Some ex’s still give me a bit of trouble (funky flow for sure, nailing that 5 stroke roll at top speed is a bitchhh) but man I’ve come a long way since I left my first comment on this years ago. Thanks Austin, this video has helped me immensely. I can’t even fathom how many times I’ve played it haha
When I started this half a year ago I had trouble with the highest speed for many of the exercises, especially Paradiddle Diddle, Funky Flam and Swiss Triplet. Half a year later I'm casually (but not yet as cleanly) tagging along with Austin. Thanks for this great exercise!
Great video. I love that the exercises aren't broken up with conversation. I don't have to skip around to play along. On a side note, I think the most beneficial implementation of an exercise has been making sure to focus on the skills I'm "not" comfortable with, rather than focusing on what I'm already good at. Another practice method I include is making sure to play the exercises (or song) leading with my weak hand and foot (left). For example, I have a double bass peddle. I'll play thru the exercises (or song) playing the base line with my right foot, then repeat the exercise (or song) playing the base line with my left foot. Hand patterns are the same. If I'm keeping rythum on the high hat with my right hand, the next go I'll keep rythum with my left hand. Same with the snare. Another thing I do is, for every exercise I practice with my dominant hand/foot, I practice the same exercise twice as long with my weak hand/foot. Everyone is different and what I do may be nonsense to others, but those are a few of my methods. Thanks again for the exercises.
I finally got through all 15 exercises at the recommended bpms. That was after working with just tbe pdf for about 2 months and after playing along with the video multiple times. My performance is still pretty rough and it is a struggle in spots. But I can get through this. Anyone can do this, but you will have to work for it and you may have to brush up on some of you rudiments to do it. I can feel the difference in my hands. Also in light of everything that is going on, stay safe everyone and wash your hands often.
I can almost play through the whole thing 🙌🏻 Then I’m doing feet underneath and play the whole thing I’ve tried it with a few and it’s so fun to use them with a foot ostinato to make sweet music on the drums 👍🏻
Question..."Can you keep up?" Answer..."No.....but I am working on it!" I downloaded the pdf when it first became available a few weeks back. Some of those patterns are really tricky. But they are attainable by anyone who puts in the effort. Take any unfamiliar pattern REALLY SLOWLY to build muscle memory. One you get that, it takes relatively little time to get it up to speed. There are no short cuts here, you have to put in the work. Thank you for a great work out Austin.
I watched during my lunch break at work and followed along, tapping without sticks on my legs. What a great challenge without the rebound of a stick. Great exercises. Thanks, Austin!
Did you play the whole thing? 👍🏻 Have been keeping up on it? 👍🏻 Alright Now do them all with a left or right foot on 1/4 notes Now do them all with foot ostinato underneath Now displace the sticking of each one Then play displacement sticking with feet underneath I’m finding so many cool things here 🤘🏻 And realizing what these things are what some of my drum idols are playing
Doğancan Dündar Yes I can I’ll make a video for you If it’s not done in a timely manner I’ll come back here and give an explanation But I should be able to make a quick video about it 👍🏻
Love this guide! Downloaded it yesterday and thought, " I got this, shouldn't be hard". But, I took every exercise very slowly and noticed tons of timing issues. So, I took some time on each one very slowly and then started to get close to the target tempos as my timing issues started to feel and sound better. Once I was up to tempo everything sounded so much cleaner. Really recommend spending some time on this SLOWLY.
I second these thoughts. This workout is attainable by anyone who puts in the effort. Once you become familiar with all 15 patterns. You can try it in real time with the video. Even then, it will take several attempts to keep up. That was my experience.
Hey, Austin! This set of exercises is the most useful thing I have ever played in my whole life. Just after a couple of months I can see a great progress. This shift from triplets to doubles and back is a killer! Thanks, from Russia with love.
Been doing this daily since early April last year as a pandemic commitment and got so used to it it's just a part of morning coffee now. What a difference. Ironically one of the last ones to click for me was the #1 at the highest tempo and that was just last week! Realized (as someone else aptly put) it was the tension in my trad. grip hand that kept me from getting all 8 strokes out at that BPM.#13 at highest BPM still clamming up mid-way but again, tension. Thanks a mill for this, it's a goldmine.
Austin!!!! Great Job, I use this with my students all the time. I have to adjust the speed for the beginner students. 80% and the advanced ones play it at 125%
Wow, thank you so much for this. When I saw your posts about a new series of guided hand workouts, I immediately went to your website to purchase it, because I enjoyed the first series so much. Really enjoyed going through all those, thanks so much for putting them together. So well shot, edited and clear to follow, I'll definitely be coming back again. Most exercises were ok, but those Swiss triplets killed me, couldn't even get the slowest one!
Just want to join in and want to thank you for this immensly helpful video. Very good for coordination, weak hand and speed. And most importantly its really fun. Thx
Loving this routine! Been doing it almost everyday for the last 4 months. When I started I couldn’t do 3 or 4 of them at the fastest speed. Now I only have one left I still gotta nail at the fastest speed. It’s definitely carried over to my hand strength and finesse on the kit… thank you so much for this 🙏🏼
This was a ton of fun, Austin. I can already see myself coming back to it over and over again. It's definitely up there in my favourites alongside Tommy Igoe's Lifetime Warmup. I appreciated the different tempos and the fact that you didn't overdo them. You kept them nice and comfortable for all levels of drummers. Some parts are tricky, but not intimidating in a way that makes you wanna give up, so that's awesome :) Great job finding the right balance, much respect! Can't wait for more!
Finally no : triplet’acctent displacemetnt’at 180 bpm ok after several minutes . Really cool vibe this pattern . Gonna try on my drums tomorrow ( was practicing on a simple pad for now ) . Nice !!
I can play them all except for lvl 3 triplet accent shuffler, lvl 3 paradiddle diddle turnaround, lvl 3 fast five turn around, lvl 3 funky flam flow, lvl 3 flam tap turnaround, levels 2 and 3 of swiss triplet turnaround, and lvl 3 of paradiddle accent displacement. I'll get em though! Thanks for the exercise! Love it!
Amazing. I‘m a beginner at 47. I‘m playing bass usually. So I made it almost through except for the one flammed exercice and except for a few other at the fastest tempo. This 40 minutes are pure gold for me. Thanks alot. 🙏 (subscribed)
Had to pause it at the paradiddle diddle turn around when played this video for the first time to get it down - following patterns are more complex and kicked my butt tbh and showed what I need to work on. Great content, will spend LOTS of time playing along
I’ve watched a lot of your videos Austin and this is one of my favorites because it’s a work out I have trouble mostly with the diddle accent and even the second accent on the double strokes because I’m used to tapping hard with the first strike on the double stroke and it takes some getting used to and that’s the main thing I need to work on everything else is really fun to play the flams are cool so keep up the good work.
Gaaaaaangsta! i am learning a lot and enjoying it... Just got a new practice pad and now realizing my prev one was making me use force vs rebounding. was like swimming in tar. really grateful to have found this vid!!!
cheers Austin i live in new zealand where i live not many drum teachers ,this challenged me heaps, thankyou so much for putting in your time ..Blows me away cheers
I just made it through my first attempt on this playthrough. I have been practicing the pdf by itself. I did better than I hoped but there are still a few patterns that I struggle with. I will practice those as a warm up before going into the workout again. Many of these patterns could be easily adaptable to real world playing. The funky flam flow has to be the coolest sounding rhythm on the workout. Thank you for a great workout Austin.
Austin, thank you for this video. Throughout the years I’ve been playing different warm up routines but I really like how yours keeps me engaged until the end. Nice to practice with a buddy! Cheers!
Hey Austin,,just saw this video and immediately grab my sticks and tried to follow you..i think I delivered about 35-40 % to all the exercises but this is a hell of a practice and challenge..thanks for the great upload..definetelly it would be in my daily hands practice routine..
really good tip for those who feel they're "bored" with these patterns: tap your feet and count aloud as you play; if that isn't enough, tap and count to the upbeat rather than the downbeat. it's amazing how much more difficulty such a simple change can add.
Awesome control!!! I will use this video and exercises every single day from here on out and pray my control and speed increase if ever so slightly. Thanks for the video.
Good exercises... I have been practicing some of this routine for many years, and I have identified myself. Now I use this video to exercise 20min. It has no waste.
This is really great. It’s a wonderful mix of drills. It’s very helpful having the time spaces at the bottom so that you can find a particular drill to work on. For a beginner some of the timing is too fast but I can stop the video and play at my own pace because you left the patterns on the screen. You thought of everything. Thank you 🙏. 👍☮️🌞🥁❤️
This is good. I’m glad you included some from the previous episode, 1-5 are some of my favourite exercises. The rest I found quite challenging, will definitely be doing this every day. Thanks Austin!
This is an excellent warm up exercise, I love it! I really enjoy combining these sticking exercises in different orders to really mix it up! Thank you Austin! Pls keep them coming to help us through this social distancing and isolation!
Been doing this exercise 5-6 times a day for 2 months now and my stick control has grown leaps and bounds!!!! Wish there was another exercise in the same style that’s just as long for a new drill!!! Awesome stuff!!! Thanks
Relaxation is the key. Tension is the enemy of all musicians.

I don’t think it is that mandatory let alone daily. If you do it often you will still progress so much.
Don’t forget to practice these with different dynamics, soft, med, hard strokes.

really good tip for those who feel they're "bored" with these patterns:
tap your feet and count aloud as you play; if that isn't enough, tap and count to the upbeat rather than the downbeat.
it's amazing how much more difficulty such a simple change can add.
Great exercises. I must give you a big thanks for giving away this material. Practicing time starts in 3, 2, 1...
Best workout ever on the net !! Great thanks from France !!! And best wishes for that New year to all !!!
It's a fun little pad w/o. Thanks Austin.
This is fantastic, thank you Austin! Im a drummer from Zimbabwe! This pretty much covers all the sticking techniques we need to become great players.
Thank you so much! And thank you so much for The Free PDF Guide!!!!!

This is good. I’m glad you included some from the previous episode, 1-5 are some of my favourite exercises. The rest I found quite challenging, will definitely be doing this every day. Thanks Austin!
Thanks Austin. This is exactly what I was looking for and I can already see weak spots ! I'm super excited to fix them!

You have prepared a priceless gift for us! I thank you for your wonderful lessons!
This is an excellent warm up exercise, I love it! I really enjoy combining these sticking exercises in different orders to really mix it up! Thank you Austin! Pls keep them coming to help us through this social distancing and isolation!
Thanks for including the last two exercises from Riley’s book. My two faves! I like to play them with a flammed accent
Been doing this exercise 5-6 times a day for 2 months now and my stick control has grown leaps and bounds!!!! Wish there was another exercise in the same style that’s just as long for a new drill!!! Awesome stuff!!! Thanks
If you really learned this you have plenty of material to create your own exercices
