  • Genesis is on a roll. The Genesis GV70 was my favorite SUV last year. The Genesis G70 is an excellent sport sedan option. And now I get to drive the Genesis G80, which brings their underpromise and overdeliver philosophy to the executive luxury sedan catagory along with their unique sense of style and design. Spoiler alert: it's great, too. If you've seen some of their concept cars, such as the Genesis X Speedium concept currently on display at the New York Auto Show, you'd see that they are serious about the future as well. Genesis is here to stay, and the G80 sedan is proof of that. Let me know what you think in the comments, and comment "Genesis rocks" if you actually read the video description. Drive safe!

    This is my second Genesis. I had previously LEASED a G90 which I loved! It was just a little too big for me, so when the lease was up I looked at the G80. PURCHASED one exactly like the one you reviewed. The BEST car I've ever owned. I've owned BMWs (3s, 5s and a Z), Jaguars & Mercedes. This 2022 G80 bests them all valuewise, styling, material quality, workmanship and driveability. Do yourself a favor, check out Genesis!

      Nice! And yes, I think that’s exactly my thoughts as well: Genesis is highly competitive if not superior in a number of ways, but they need a gasp-inducing powertrain to compete fully with the German brands. Thanks for watching!

    On the part you said "most people don't know what you're driving" most people really don't, my friend once addressed that car as a Bently, I didn't blame him because honestly I could see where his coming from, it shows that this car is that good, its that beautiful that people mistake it to be a Bently, and that wasn't the 1st time I've heard that before, even me, one day I saw the car from afar and I also called it a Bently until it came close and I couldn't believe it was a genesis I was looking at, it's actually that good, genesis is really becoming one of my best brand in recent times because of the caliber of cars they make at unbelievable prices, a similarly specd German car would cost you 20 - 30% more and you would still not get features like rear wheel steering, 3d Guage cluster and soft close doors

    Great review, enthusiastic !! Genesis is killing it, the G80 is beautiful and premium looking inside and out. It needed the raised infotainment controller wheel from the GV70 and didn't Genesis listen to folks and change to the GV70 controller for 2023. I Bought a GV70 3.5 Sport Prestige (one of the first 4 my dealer received) and just had my painless one year service, concierge brought a GV80 to my home, perfect. I LOVE my GV70, owned Germans and Jags over the decades, and the GV70 blew me away. The HUGE difference between comfort mode and sport/sport+ sealed the deal, like two vehicles in one. Keep up the Genesis reviews...........

      Actually they did listen. You need to get the 2023 G80 2.5 Sport Prestige (mine is awd) and you get the raised knob. How do I know? Because I traded my 2022 GV70 3.5 Advanced in on this G80. I rarely miss the 3.5t but the Prestige in the 2.5 gives you the digital 3D dash that is way cool and I don’t have to have those waffle 20’s or 21’s in the case of the GV70. The nice tweed seats, power doors, power shade and some other do-dads but I did feel like I got screwed a bit not getting the HUD and miss it.

    • @rmyAddison
      @rmyAddison ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vanceforrest4085 Different strokes. The only way to get "everything" is the "3.5 Sport Prestige", GV70 or G80. I wanted every one of those features, including HUD and sport steering wheel, wireless charging, safety/camera features, etc. I came from BMW and Jaguar, Genesis has a great product line. Enjoy your G80, I love my GV70 3.5 Sport Prestige.

    • @vanceforrest4085
      @vanceforrest4085 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rmyAddison Yup you’re right, different strokes. I had the redesigned BMW 430ix for seven months and traded it because the electrical problems were ridiculous, and got the GV70. My main point was confirming I got the raised knob like my GV70 with prestige package but not the knurled knob in the 3.5 prestige. I’ve used both and I don’t know why the easier of the two knobs isn’t the one they’ve gone with on all of them. I’ve also seen other people complain about the Sport redesign not having the wood paneling and grampa’s oval steering wheel.
      You’re absolutely right, different strokes. Gave up the GV70 Prestige, HUD, Elsd, because I couldn’t get past the wheels. Spent the $5k saved on the Advanced and put on 21’s Ferrada’s. The guy that said what should go on the G80 2.5 Sport Prestige redesign was reading my mind. Just what I wanted. It’s a work car and I like getting the 30+ mpg on the highway vs the 3.5…but it wasn’t easy to give up 😢 Enjoy your GV, great choice. I’d still have mine after a year and a half if I didn’t let my emotions make me get the Brunswick matte green, knowing you can only hand wash it. Tough living with those terms in salty WI.

    That is a beautiful design. I feel like a gently used one (in a normal market) would be a really appealing deal. Not sure if it was true now, but I know Genesis depreciation was pretty hefty for a while. Used Stinger has a similar appeal imo, though this looks far nicer.

    Great review! It’s perfect. Love the newest genesis products. Grew up a major BMW fan, had 330ci coupe, 328i, 428i gran coupe, 535ix, X650i, and a few land rovers. I definitely noticed bmw in past years their quality with the 3 series, 4 series and X3 and X4 became very cheaply made, too much plastic on a “premium” brand, then went to Lexus RX for reliability… but unfortunately even more so covered in plastic and horribly outdated tech, and quickly became bored. Went out and got a 2022 GV80 3.5L Prestige which I am enjoying as much as my previous BMW X6. The only thing I was concerned with was when the X6 was going out of warranty, I knew the repairs were going to be very costly which is why I down sized. It was a 2015 X650i msrp $97500 and I picked up 1 year old for $65k. The GV80 at $73,500 msrp is fully loaded with more tech than the almost $100k X650i with executive package.
    Even 8 years ago cars use to plummet which doesn’t happen near as much anymore. It almost doesn’t make sense to buy slightly used cars when they are the same price range as new, which is another reason I turned to Genesis. It is like getting the luxury of German with the reliability of Lexus. Genesis has their new 100k 10 year warranty. Lexus allows you to purchase an additional 5 year extended warranty after origional warranty and they will refund you the years of extended warranty you don’t use and/or transferable which I appreciated. Back to genesis. Their new GV70 also looks amazing. Love the G80 sedan styling as well. Not wild about the GV60 electric styling, maybe it’s the whole front end and headlight and round styling that doesn’t look sporty or aggressive as the rest of the line up, Range also need to at minimum get into the 300 mile range. My only issue is I wish the GV80 was a little better on gas mpg but it is a large heavy SUV.

    really great review as always! but absolutely not sure about the statement from 6:49 - 6:55, how is Genesis supposed to compete with the hydraulic E-Active Body Control suspension from Mercedes, manufacturers can’t even keep up with the Active Body Control system from over 20 years ago😅

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear ya, but I think there are a lot of things that sound good in theory but in practice they’re a bit different. The Merc’s suspension falls into that category for me. Sounds super awesome and advanced, but in practice on certain roads it moves around far too much. Considering it costs $40k more… I think the Genesis is doing a very good approximation for far less. Just my two cents. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

      @@jax1079 well the question is which suspension from Mercedes and which model are you referring to? Genesis does a great job considering how "cheap" they are, no doubt, but their suspension definitely can’t compete or even are as capable as the Active Body Control, Magic Body Control or now the optional E-Active Body Control in the S-Class, have you ever driven one of them? otherwise you wouldn’t even think of comparing them, there’s no system that you could compare them to, the only one who comes close is the optional Predictive Active Suspension in the Audi A8😅

      @jax1079  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dr-ok3sn No, I haven't been behind the wheel of the new S class yet, so you're probably right, but I look at it like the law of diminishing returns: you're having to spend an incredible amount of money to get a marginally better ride (not to mention the amount of tech involved in making it so, which is its own concern). I don't think anyone can touch the Germans in terms of ride quality and sophistication, but I'm not sure that's really necessary when the magnetic ride control in something like the C8 Corvette is so incredibly capable (and comfortable).

    • @dr-ok3sn
      @dr-ok3sn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jax1079 you’re absolutely right, the price and the tech involved with them is absurd, but anyone who can buy such expensive cars can also afford such options. it just gets a problem for someone who buys them for cheap on the used market when they break. but tbh the ride actually feels really different/better, not just marginal! you don’t necessarily need a new S-Class to try it, maybe you can get somewhere a W222 or A217 with the MBC and you’re really going to notice the difference! only Bentley and Rolls Royce are pretty much close or even better than the germans. oh wait... their parent companies are german too😂

    All their money goes into product and design. Sadly they have no dealer service. I don’t consider a brand luxury when sales and service is suppportrd by same Hyundai dealer selling and servicing Sonatas. Lexus and bMw sales and service personnel are trained and there are actual professionals at every level of those dealerships. Till then stay Genesis is simply a gimmick.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re starting to open standalone dealerships. Plus, the customer experience is supposed to be unique to the brand regardless of being sold through Hyundai/Kia. I wouldn’t dismiss Genesis on the basis of dealer cache, either, considering plenty of dealers (luxury or not) do not exactly live up to the image of the brands they’re supposed to be selling. The quality of the vehicle is not determined by the dealership, and if the oil change experience is holding you back from purchasing it seems odd considering you’re basing it on something that happens once every 7k miles when you live with the product every single day. Just my way of looking at it. Thanks for watching. 🙏🏻

Both Lexus and BMW (I am sure same is true for Mercedes and Acura) spend incredible amount of time on training and certification for those service people. They pay them more too. Even the service advisors are tenured and college degreed and in my experience work there a lifetime. Lexus is next level, fixing the problems first time, and never any pressure. My wife worked for a Hyundai dealer (front office). It is the worst of the worst when it comes to staffing, I dare say Chevy level or worse (depending on Chevy franchise). I'll take innovation and reliability over badge perception any day of the week and hope my time at the dealership is minimal. And BMW's techs are trained so well because they have to be. Second, how can you seriously know anything about Genesis reliability long term? I mean their SUVs been on market for 1-2 years. Their sedans are all redesigned (now with turbo engines and problematic dual clutch transmissions). Please get back with me on reliability account after they been around like Lexus. If reliability is your thing, I highly recommend Lexus and then Acura.
      And for the record, Lexus is owned by Toyota, we all know Toyota reliability. Genesis is built by Hyundai, with engines that catch fires, and burn oil. Their dealers are refused warranty back. Engines totally replaced all the time. Problematic dual clutch transmissions. When was last time you heard that kind of record about any Toyota?

I like Lexus a lot, but they play it VERY safe in the space (the “new” IS is anything but, they axed the GS, and the GX, as much as I love it, is older than dirt). That said, I’m in the all new NX this week and it feels much fresher while still retaining that sense of Lexus quality. The head will choose the NX, but for my money, my heart would get the Genesis GV70, which feels that much more special. I hope Genesis stays strong long term, but only time will tell. The newest Genesis vehicles HAVE NOT been ranked in long term reliability yet, not the GV70, GV80 or this new G80. The JDP Dependability Study looks at 3 year old vehicles, that doesn't include all of Genesis new vehicles. A 90 day initial quality survey doesn't mean jack. Very misleading to try to say that these new products have proven reliable when they clearly haven't been proven.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree because you could make the same argument about any three year old model from any company, and as movement on the list shows (such as with Honda and Acura), a brand’s well earned reputation for quality can itself be misleading without proper context. What’s notable about the Genesis example is that both Hyundai and Kia were near the top of the list as well, indicating across the board improvements year over year across all brands. While it’s correct to say that the newest models are not necessarily factored in, the high rankings and consistency across brands would seem to indicate an attempt to match Lexus rather than the German brands. Of course, if Genesis (and Hyundai/Kia) is to do that, they’ll have to remain there for years to come as Lexus has. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

Where Kia is, where Hyundai is, where the Germans are, where Lexus is all just irrelevant filler. It has NOTHING to do with the facts I just stated about Genesis newest vehicles NOT being included in any long term reliability surveys yet so I'm at a loss as to what you're disagreeing with. No. Does it show that there is a pattern of reliability among those brands that should give consumers more confidence? Yes, I believe it does. In the same way that Lexus built its reputation over time. When the original LS came out, it set a precedent that gave people buying a 97 LS more confidence. Because of this, I think the rankings are relevant to the current models.

You're trying to find away around the facts here and you simply can't. What you think or feel doesn't matter here. Their newest vehicles, GV70, GV80, G80 HAVE NOT been surveyed long term yet. Fact. Nothing you an say changes that fact.
