I lost a dear friend as a senior in high school. I got the call that said if I wanted to say goodbye, I needed to get to the hospital. I didn't make it. She was an organ donor, and several years later, I met the person who has her heart as well as her mother. What a gift that was.

I love this song. My son is an organ recipient, from a live donor, and my best friend is a liver recipient from a deceased donor. Normally, you don't know who your donor is, but when my friend got the call, she was at her son's soccer game. She had heard from another parent that a student at the high school had just been in a motorcycle accident. He was not wearing a helmet. She got his liver.

Bonnie has been my musical spirit animal for 50 years. Now in her golden years she proves she has aged like the finest wine. I have listened to this song more times than I can count (she wrote it BTW) and even though I know it by heart, I tear up every time. Her voice, the guitar, the story. In the trophy case with her best offerings.

I was unaware this song existed until you reacted to it. In late December 2018 my daughter received a kidney/pancreas transplant. She is a divorced single mother whose son was 10 yrs at the time. She was also a diabetic since the age of 2. We have not had contact with the family of the donor aside from a thank you letter from my daughter that was delivered by an intermediary. Without personal contact, we are not privy to the circumstances of the donor’s demise. I’m not sure the donor’s family can really understand just how fortunate we feel, but also deeply saddened by what they lost. I will be forever grateful for what the Lord graced us with that December day.

Bonnie never disappoints. When this song was nominated I didn't think it had a chance because it was up against the usual "pop star" offerings. You should watch the video of her winning.
    She was shocked!

Wow! After all these years, Bonnie can still make us cry. She'll be quick to tell you that John Prine is humming in her ear every time she writes a song, and when you listen to something like this, you can hear it for yourself.

We lost my brother in law to kidney disease 18 month's ago. He died waiting for kidney's so many people die waiting for organs. All i can say is give life to someone else say yes to being an organ donor. I have terminal cancer but there is no such a thing is an esophagus transplant so i will die there is no hope for me. So give life to others that are waiting for organs. I lost my daughter in 79 murdered and my son took his own life in 2017 he was only 32 so i will see them soon. God bless you. Awesome rection.

Once I passed about 60, I started falling apart. One thing after another, but somehow the blood clots and heart attacks and gangrene, and a tick bite that made me allergic to meat and all proteins, I survived.
But being the last one standing is a lonely place. I keep losing pieces of my life a little at a time. I drive down local roads and see the houses of old friends. They're all shuttered, sad and forlorn in their faded memories, while a fortunate few have new children to echo laughter to the sun. But no old friends.
There's a sleek new bridge across Rock Creek, but this upgrade obliterated the best swimming hole for 30 miles. There's a Dollar Store and a beauty shop now, instead of Harbaugh's Five and Dime. On the way home I pass what remains of the Starlight Outdoor Theater, where I got my first kiss from the girl I would eventually return and marry, and still the greatest treasure of my heart after 44 years.
I get a bit misty eyed, till I think of all the things I've seen and done, the foreign countries I've been to, (and only got shot at in one of them.). "We Sang in the Sunshine" and didn't trust anyone over 30.
And we always had the music. Now, here in the shadows so far from the 50s and 60s, that those days of legends seem a dream, even to us, we await the curtain call.
Just remember, it'll be alright, as long as we can see the light. Peace, ✌.

I just love this poignant song, and love Bonnie Raitt. I saw her multiple times in the70's and she is as good or better live than on her records. She has great musicians in her band too. So the story of this song is real, but she changed the name to protect this mother's identity. The musical style is one she is good at, but she chose it as a tribute to her good friend who passed away last year, John Prine. Bonnie adored him, and he wrote Angel From Montgomery, which you might have heard. It's a Bonnie staple. If not, check it out, you'll love it. And as a now retired nurse, Bonnie has told a transplant story in 2 beautiful verses in a way that brings so much awareness and realness to the world. As medical professionals, we get wordy when discussing this, but Bonnie is completely from the heart. I believe that she may have helped to increase transplant surgeries through this song. It is hard to deal with when you lose a loved one, but it really does bring life to another family! And lastly ,I lost my younger son at age 29 unexpectedly and suddenly and my heart is broken . There was no closure, although it was back in 2012. This song is so real, it helps me. Thanks for playing this and for your channel.

So many great songs from Bonnie. She is a legend and national treasure. Check out "Nick of Time" (this is a haunting and beautiful song about a woman who wants to have kids, but her significant other doesn't want to) and "Something to Talk About." Her album Nick of Time reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1989. This album has since been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry.

We lost the legendary John Prine to COVID not long after he beat cancer. Bonnie Raitt took Prine's passing very hard as they were long time friends. BR said this inspired her to write a song on how in the deepest despair, God can bring a measure of peace to one's soul.

This is not fictional, but based on a news story she read. She was moved to write this song, partly in memory of her friend John Prine who recently passed. I will probably never be able to listen to this song without crying. Im fine with that.

My friend was in dire need of a liver transplant and was on a transplant list when his half brother passed away suddenly. I’m not sure how the mechanics work, but the family was able to work out a family donation. The match between the two was as perfect as it could possibly be.
So Jason is blessed with a second chance at life and will carry a piece of his brother inside him for as long as he lives.
As it turned out, his kidneys and lungs were given successfully so that others could survive their ordeals as well.

She won the Grammy for writing this, I believe she said it was in response to all the loss during covid. At her peak vocally and in popularity back in the 90s, she can still deliver a lyric, and her reputation as Queen of the slide guitar is still intact. Check out the albums Nick Of Time, Luck Of The Draw, Road Tested, and Longing In Their Hearts, all released between 1989 to 1994.

As we travel our own course, be aware that people are going through all kinds of things around us while living *their* daily lives too. Some painful, some joyful, some just boringly the same. It's always best to be kind when you can and let go when you must but always know that everybody hurts sometime including you and me. :) No act of kindness is ever wasted y'know.

I lost a good friend in 2000 to kidney failure. I didnt know he had already had one 10yrs earlier he was so humble he never told me. The only thing he would say is how important it is to be a donor. It made me think. I became one before I knew about his need for a second one. Dialysis was hard on him 😢 His tired body couldn't hold on for a match. We lost him in his sleep.

There are so many artists and songs which affect your emotions in different ways. Good story telling is good story telling. If you ever feel the need to cry, watch the music videos by Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved/Wish You the Best/Before You Go
James Blunt - Monsters/The Girl Who Never Was/Carry You Home
    Jelly Roll - Save Me/Need a Favor/Almost Home
Larkin Poe - Mad as a Hatter (at the Convent)
The way music can evoke feelings and emotions is it greatest reason for being.
