    That hard-to-kickstart feature is why Harleys fell out of favor with bank robbers .

    if the machine is properly tuned up, and if the owner knows how to kick start them, and if your familiar with the machine ( I was not), they start in 1-3 kicks EVERYTIME

      WARNING:
      Do not buy any kicker ratchet parts other than US-made Baker. Taiwan gears are made out of grossly inferior metal as are their easily bent kicker arms. After decades of kicking without injury (including British singles which suck far worse to light off) a bad ratchet in a Custom Chrome kicker kit got me. An over-extended knee is no fun. Fortunately I'd left the original electric-start primary/oil tank/battery box on my Shovel so installing a modern starter motor while my knee was healing was easy. The old HD starter motors are feeble by comparison.
      Agree on easy starting of properly tuned bikes. I always spec the lowest compression pistons I can find (old HDs in the kick-only era had low static compression for good reasons such as tolerating crappy fuel and avoiding detonation) and have kickstarted my Shovel by hand when warmed up.

      1-3 kicks if you have an OCD about tuning the bike...my shovel starts with 2 primer kicks and 1 with the key on.............sometimes....i have learned that if you're riding old iron...you just cant be in a hurry to get where you're goin.

    Not sure why TH-cam recommended a 6 year old video for me, but this is one kinda weird TH-cam recommendation I can truly appreciate. I wish I could tell one story about kickin' a Shovel one time and starting it after it's owner had literally tried 10 times as long as it took you in this vid, but the story is so much better when told right than anybody would spend the time to read it, so I reckon I'll pass. I just turned 65 and also "just" had double hernia repair surgery (in January, but the way the recovery has gone so far, "just" is close enough), so there's no way I'd be workin' that hard to go out and have fun riding at the present time. That said, watching you brought back some super-fond and fine memories to say the least. To this day I've never ridden (or had to start) a scoot with a magneto, but from age 19 to about 30 my first four bikes were all Shovels and all kick-start-only. A couple or three more in the intervening years, and I'm here to tell ya's that I know both the joy and the excruciating pain a bike like that can give ya. My wife of 35 years and I never had kids, but I hear tell it's kinda like that, joy and pain.
    Don't think I've ever landed on your channel before, but I will like this vid and sub to the channel before I surf elsewhere. Really enjoyed the vid, and that scoot looked and sounded great in it. Take care of that leg, Brother. Sounds like you'll be needin' it right up until you begin your time in the next life.

    Had a 78 1/2 Super Glide Shovel ... FX, ie without the E, so I learned all about kickstarting. As I became the boss of the kickstart process, I learned about rhoids; maybe it was just a coincidence. Once in a while the bike smacked me for thinking I was the boss. What a great, trouble-free bike it was. Watching you kick and kick brought back some tears and laughs! I kept it for 16 great years. Nice video, nice comments.

    Quick story, working in the shipyards (SF) there was a group of biker machinists. These are the kind of guys that are building pan-heads, shovel heads, knuckles in their living rooms at home. After work the ritual was throw the leathers over the seat and start kickin ( like this gentleman). When they finally came alive they would suit up while setting the idle. The tune on these beautiful bikes was legendary. Potato potato potato potato potato. Sound like they are about to die but don’t.When they took off “ shiver me timbers”. I looked forward to watching this every day for 3 years. I rode a Suzuki GS1100E . Those guys were bad ass.

  • @HuntingHarleys
    @HuntingHarleys  10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    the "problem" with an electric start is that they will start even when they are not running right. A kicker puts you in tune with the machine.

    • @3pmbreadtruck811
      @3pmbreadtruck811 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have also found , that a kicker will also put you in tune with GOD. When you hiper exstend your knee on a missed kick .

      when a Harley Davidson motorcycle is in perfect tune[mine 1981 flh80] they will restart on a hot start up no problem,people who think they are real mechanics are not,worked with a lot of them,in the end,i tuned their bikes,now they ride with me

      Fyi can still get a badly tuned bike to run when it's kickstart, just takes a little more effort , some bikes (when tuned properly) are actually harder to start with electric than to kick them (my 07 wr450f happens to be one)(week starters that Yamaha uses) its best to have both in my opinion.

    I had a '63 BSA once which never started properly no matter how long I got used to it. I remember the sweating, the exhaustion, the entire performance, often before a gathering audience, the helpful advice (you almost had it that time! A bit more choke and she'd have fired right up!). But then it does fire up, and it roars, and it shakes, and all of a sudden none of that matters anymore.

    + eric williams the magneto advances by itself internally if I recall correctly on this one. The carb did not have an accelerator pump, twisting the throttle does not give it gas

    • @HuntingHarleys
      @HuntingHarleys  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Joseph Biasatti Assuming everything else is working properly, carburetor properly adjusted and tuned, no manifold leaks, magneto proper charges and tuned, the error of starting would be on the operator. The "problem" arises when anything of the above is OFF. Putting stock pints ignition in, or a Dyna S, is not going to solve the problem is anything of the above is still OFF

    • @HuntingHarleys
      @HuntingHarleys  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +anthony chulski There are quite a few videos like that on the channel. in showing, it is also showing the carb that is on the machine and technique I am using. you just have to watch closely. Each motor, type of timing, cam, and carb creates it's own technique, and each bike is just a little different. How one likes to start can be quite different from the next. That is why I have not made a specific "this is how". There are two many variables. That video would only apply to very similar machines

    I have a 1974, Reynard a Super-G carburetor I found that you have to have the correct intermediate jet and your timing set perfectly and you will have a fairly easy kick-start. My bike can sit for a month or so and it may take 5 kicks. Normally it to kick bike after I prime it. I name the bike Valentine because it's a sweetheart one side round the secret to the jetting and timing I never touched it again and that has been six or seven years. My bike normally out starts the Electric Dirt Bikes. I dig these videos. That's when bike's were bikes and people appreciated the mechanics of them

    Nothing better than the sound of a shovel head. Evo motors don't sound the same. Why do a lot of guys stand next to the bike to kick start it? My dad had a '71 Super Glide and he always straddled the bike to kick start it. When I hit old enough , he taught me the same way. Seems like less chance of the bike tipping over and a more comfortable position. Every kid should experience the right of passage of learning to kick start a Harley. Nice bike.

    • @HuntingHarleys
      @HuntingHarleys  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it has to do with body shape and especially length of ones legs. My legs are short, They are simply not long enough to give me the leverage needed to start a bike that way. Ones body weight also comes into play here. One is not starting with leg strength, but by using the downward force of body weight. Starting to the side gives one an advantage to put more body weight thrust into the motion. Many of the guys who start straddling the machine put way too much of the kick into the power of the leg. This puts stress on the knee joint and it is very common to see those guys have knee replacements later in life as a result.

      Straddle the bike? Well I used to. After a snow skiing accident over 30 years ago (tore up my right knee) I had to use my left leg to start my old Panhead. 4 weeks ago I was "rear ended" on that same old Pan and the derby cover slammed hard onto my left leg. I've been limping ever since then and am wondering at the age of 65 if I'll ever be able to start it again. To all the macho guys that run an open primary the clutch hub studs would have ground my left leg to uselessness! The night of the accident I was laying on the road wondering why do I ride a motorcycle? Got an Evo Dyna with electric start and will be riding it more. The old Pan may wind up in my living room so I can just look at it and reminisce about all the fun I had with it.

    every bike is different to start period.wether it's kick or electric start. omIts always 1: pump has three times 2: hold throttle half I on 3: kick.....or its 1. five hundred other combinations of things. The fact is, once you ride a bike for a week or so you figure the "sweet spots" out. Trust me it don't take long to figure most out once you've kicked them over ten times. It's kind of a process of elimination. Anyone who doesn't know that about kickers or bikes in general, just don't know much about bikes.
    Killer bike as usual.

    In 1976 I was the only kid in my high school with a 1975 FX(kick start only) SuperGlide. I bought it by mixing paint and loading bagged garden products at KMART! It felt really great to ride that bike. They weren’t, all that reliable compared to my buddies with Honda 750 triples and Kawasaki 1000 LTD. Still those were fun times.

    I'd rather kick a bit and ride something I enjoyed riding. Riding Honda's, for me, are not fun. Why ride something you don't enjoy even if it starts right up?

    I had a super glide FX kick start only. Same year. No magneto and standard carb, however. I kicked that bad boy so hard it twisted the kick starter shaft. Twisted it about 1/6 way round.
    So I started pushing it down a hill near my place. The hill was so steep, they called it the wall. It got this nick name from bicycle races that came UP (!!) the damn thing.
    Loved the bike but wow it was fun to start. Gives you hella workout, or at least it feels like it.

    In my 20's I had a 1973 Shovel on 1948 HardTail frame, P-Tank, Kick Start only with Mag & S&S SuperB Carb (no fuel pump) and it was a Bitch to start if you didn't get it on 1st or 2nd kick. My right knee was never the same :-). But man was I cool when it ran!

      Harley's start 1st kick, nearly every time, IF they are set up right AND you know the bike. This one had an extremely long duration cam, making it kick through like it had no compression. If you cannot feel the compression stroke, you cannot control when it starts. I explained this, someone has to listen.

    • @HuntingHarleys
      @HuntingHarleys  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +7byrdshell12 obviously, you were not paying attention. When a bike has a long enough duration cam, you cannot feel a compression stroke. When a machine kicks like it has no compression because of the cam, starting it is very difficult without being very familiar with the machine.

      7byrdshell12 you have no respect obviously, he’s someone you can learn something from, I can guarantee most guys half his age wouldn’t have the patience nor the energy to do that much kicking. There is a mechanism and rhythm. Learn something peasant

  • @HuntingHarleys

    What I was talking about once the bike started was the clear points cover on the mag which allows you to see where the points gap is and points cam and makes starting easier if you can properly judge where the opening is at on the front cylinder. Obviously, this didn't do me any good as I could not see it properly when I started it.

    It almost looked like was too rich with the dark smoke popping out. My S&S was 1 or 2 with no primer vlv up, or if cold, 2 with lever up, turn key on, and 1 to start. :-) started as a '76 super glide, ended up in a '57 straight leg rigid, 3" primo belt, jammer 9 over wide springer. 13" sprung seat, awesome scoot. And yes, there is a knack to kicking, most had a harder time starting mine than I did.
    NICE looking ride!! Simple and sweet (y)
