- The Shovel Head is a Harley-Davidson engine with a storied past and a bad reputation. The circumstances surrounding the Shovel Head's era were that of economic crisis and corporate mismanagement. While all this gave the Shovel a bad name, it's really a iconic and desirable engine to own today. With better fuel, good tuning and some basic maintenance they can really be reliable engines. The early years of the Shovel Head earned it a reputation for a powerful and reliable work horse. Low quality fuel, corporate greed and no quality control eroded this engines once great reputation.
