  • Everything is connected.
    Substances, forces, life itself - everything forms units to stand in balance.
    We all are surrounded by, and even part of a great unity.
    When we go outdoors, we strive for these moments where we become one with what
    surrounds us, to connect, to unite passion, sport and nature. As cyclists, this connection can sometimes feel damped, even detached, as what makes sense to be united, inexplicably isn’t.
    When it comes to the next generation of e-bikes, the Pinion E-Drive System is here to
    change that. The Pinion MGU brings together, what belongs together. It’s more than a
    drivetrain. It’s a powertrain. It's motor and gearbox unified.

      also Revonte One which is beautifully simple. direct transposition of Toyota or Ford hybrid vehicles eCVT. pedalling is somehow similar to ICE being only efficient and "powerful" in a relatively narrow rpm range so you have pedals turning one input of the planetary gear set, one electric motor with torque matching the rider pedaling torque and rotating at different speeds to generate different gear ratios, an a second motor on the output shaft to increase the assist level if needed. no moving part except rotating parts in the planetary gear set, no gear selection mechanism, no shifts, very little losses. very easy to make it automatic with a cadence target window, but the weird things being that fixed gear ratios can only be emulated by constantly adjusting the motor speed and torque, and the fact that it doesn't have a fixed gear range. the maximum gear ratio depends how fast you are pedalling?! I don't think that's a problem for legal ebikes that have a maximum pedal assist speed though.
      Seems best suited for cargo ebikes and emtb

    I honestly think this will finally render derailleur drivetrains as a niche thing. This system makes much more sense! Cross-country weight minimalists might still use legacy drivetrains, but for e-bikes, downhill, enduro, adventure and biking in general, a trigger shifter gearbox with belt drive is a dream come true. I am so looking forward to seeing pinion take over the whole industry. Finally someone did it. Congrats, Pinion!

As there's not much talk about integration of lights, bike computer/map navigation, USB-C charger (for bike computers or smartphones), I think this'll be left to high-end e-MTB. I hope that they partner with Bosch even just for the ABS alone.

  • @Plasmo20
    @Plasmo20 ปีที่แล้ว

    Makes so much sense. The pinion gearbox-belt drivetrain has been limited by the perceived losses and weight vs chain/derailleur options. By Incorporating the motor to the pinion gearbox sidesteps the arguments about weight and losses as being an eMTB the focus is no longer on weight weenies and nth degree performance. The upsides can finally be heralded for what they are.
    1) No RD issues (under load shifting, bent hanger, ripped off RD, chain wear, cassette wear, lubrication, cleaning),
    2) weight is removed from the unsprung mass of the rear wheel,
    3) the rear wheel hub can be more uniform as no cassette width is to be compromised for. Equal spokes.
    4) 1 piece Motor/gearbox unit, so all shifting is encased in a hard shell, no damage, no wear.
    5) Maintenance of the drivetrain = 10,000 km oil change
    6) Belt drive is good for 40,000kms? like 'forever'
    7) 600% gear range with uniform 17% gaps
    I am keen to see these on an eMTB I can access in Australia.
    NEXT is to move to the next battery tech that is safer than Lithium Ion (burning bombs), so we can travel with the bikes again and drop the weight.

    I'd like to see a Pinion developed for road and gravel bikes with dropped bars. Ideally, with a lightweight (perhaps carbon fibre) casing and a junction box that to which you attach traditional road bike cables or an electric box to which you connect the shifter paddles (e.g. Di2) or a bluetooth receiver. The large surface area of the pinion case could add a lot of rigidity to the bottom bracket area of a bike, which could be an advantage. Being able to choose crank size arm size, without having to change the chainset is also an advantage, as is also being able to use a standard wheel or
    even a lightweight carbon fibre one. As for some efficiency loss due to drag, I think this only matters if you are riding faster than 30km/hr. Most gravel riding and touring is below this speed. I'd love to be a tester for this system.

    Awesome, I was waiting for someone to do this! It appears you have designed a beautiful product. I can't wait to see it in action. You should have expanded your collaboration with MRP or Pauls to design a belt tensioner that doesn't get destroyed on the first couple rides out. All those I know on pinion drive full suspension bikes have this problem. To date, no one has come up with a belt tensioner that gives clearance at the bottom bracket where even more strikes occur than the rear derailluer strikes that Pinon has done such a good job eliminating.

    Finally to see a combined unit right in the center of gravity, ideal riding control.
    But is it designed to be "motor assist" by default or "human power" by default?
    It very tempting to design it like an "automatic gearbox" with 'larger gear steps increment', which removes the 'feel of control' and 'joy of speed' when it run out of battery (at some point).
    Rohloff & alfine have smaller increment steps for this reason as it designed for human power primarialy.
    Which goes back to the original question, what does Pinion actually offer with their P, C XR lineup, comparing to the riding disipline that is out there?
    1 - for road bikes, far fetched but possible
    2 - for MTB, great choice but not twist shift
    3 - for eMTB & gravel with MGU, good choice
    4 - performance Commuter, Alfine provide better choice for various reason
    5 - Basic Commuter, but too expensive
    6 - for Foldable commuter, possible, but not with current design.
    7 - for Touring & backpacking - 1st choice

      Of course, the MGU is an e-bike system only, but you can deactivate the assistance at any time, then the MGU drives like a normal Pinion gearbox. This is also how the system behaves when the battery runs out, but don't worry, there is still enough remaining capacity for up to 1,000 gear changes, but the system needs to be turned on in order to shift.

    Is everything powered by the battery pack? What happens if the battery pack is discharged? Will the gearbox be stuck in the last gear that it was using before power ran out?

    • @PinionChannel
      @PinionChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No that will not happen, even if the batterie is empty and the motor won't support you anymore, you simply ride a normal Pinion Gearbox and the system will use the last batterie capacity to shift the gears (there will always be enough capacity left for you to ride back home).

      @@PinionChannel Is power required to keep the gearbox in a particular gear? In the very unlikely scenario where battery fails or get stolen, is the bike rideable?

    • @PinionChannel
      @PinionChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Airboy123 If you don't turn on the e-bike system at all, the last gear you have shifted in will stay until you change the gears again. So it's rideable and in case it gets stolen, you can lock the system in the FIT App before you leave it.

    • @PinionChannel

      Yes for maintance you can loosen the tension on the belt tensioner. For replacement you need to open the frame, which depends on the bike brand and model.

    so awesome. I want an MTB with this, but without the spaceship controller and the big fragile screen. Take notes from TQ and specialized on the interface/integration and you have a winner. I also want it to be serviceable so we don't have to throw it away after warranty period it something need service, like with the Shimano motors.

    Are your pedal strokes going through the drivetrain? IOW, are your pedal strokes directly turning the chainring, or is it routed through the internal gearing? I don't know if it was yours, but I saw a system demonstrated about a year ago where the pedal stroke was routed through the gearbox before actually turning the chainring.
    This gear system may be fine for an electric motor, but it is horrible for pedal power. With all the gears in there, it is probably robbing 10-15% of input power. In a cutaway of this gearbox, I counted 9 visible meshed gears. Each one has bearing or bushings. I hear this requires a yearly oil change, meaning there is windage losses as well from sitting in oil.
