  • Learn what runaway trim is and how to overcome it in a Cirrus aircraft and CitationJet.
After a recent accident where a pilot said their plane was over trimming, Rich wanted to share some info on how to respond to runaway trim. As always, check with your own POH or operating manual for your aircraft and learn what the memory items are for this emergency.

Excellent video. Great topic that all pilots should be aware of... even student pilots. Thanks.

Thx, Bob. Wish it could’ve been available for the pilots we’ve lost.

I agree, I wish it had been available for the pilots we’ve lost. I wrote an article on Autopilot Trim for the August 2023 issue of IFR Magazine and I'm working on one on Trim Runaway for a future issue. Your video was one of the best I've seen on the subject. @@PersonalWings

I may not have understood. SO, you follow the emergency procedure and pull the circuit breakers. And that will help with what? You keep referring to it, but never explain what that will accomplish; it seems like what your saying is by disengaging the emergency trim breakers, I am over-riding the electrical trim control and making it manual?

Pulling the CB prevents the system from activating the servos to adjust the trim surfaces which will result in unwanted control input. And yes, you'll need to use manual trim to adjust trim.

@@PersonalWings OK Wow. I was thinking about the recent situation over Wyoming, where the pilot came out of Auto-Pilot and frankly, IMO, he simply did not remember or know to checklist to disengage the surfaces, and it killed them. And, all I can think is that if the pilot had just did the procedure. But, I think he keep messing with autopilot, thinking that would override the surfaces.

Is it the same procedure on a cirrus sr22 or sr20?

Within an avionics suite (e.g. Avidyne or G1000) it is the same. One of the key points is the pre-G1000 avionics only have an autopilot (AP) disconnect switch - it DOES NOT interrupt trim - which is important. Also as I mentioned make sure you can identify, and pull, the trim/AP CB with your eyes closed in the SRs - they are almost impossible to see especially in an emergency. Practicing emergencies is important. You can even practice on the ground with a GPU, which is what I do. Any other questions, just ask.

I had electric pitch trim in my T-210. In a runaway trim situation it would take some time to identify the circuit breaker. In an emergency, what about flipping off the master switch to disengage electric trim to buy time time to locate it?

I had the same switch in my Aerostar 700 with runaway pitch trim, resulting in a 30 degree nose up departing Dulles (KIAD). Not fun. I figured out that if I used the co-pilot pitch trim it would work -- and it saved my life. One reason I always pre-flight both trim switches.
If you can't find the CB (I suggest you put a collar on it for easy location), then turn off the AP Master --- not the Bat Master. The danger with the battery master is you then lose all avionics, and risk total loss of Situational Awareness (SA). You may also want to verify if pressing AND holding your pitch trim switch will disable the trim --- if so, then use that method while you hunt for the CB.

    how is it Eclipse Jet?

The Eclipse has one of the most sophisticated trim systems in a light jet, perhaps the most comprehensive. With the Eclipse you can use the ALL Interrupt button to stop a number of functions, including trim, stick pusher, etc. If you hold it for 2 seconds, a screen on the MFD appears and it allows you to alternatively control the trim using the MFD - very cool.
