    I have to say, the fact that tall figure wasn't actively killing them off and actually did help Marcus is quite unique. I half expected the man to be some spirit or eldritch creature who entertains itself with people's gruesome death.

    • @cvernon5256
      @cvernon5256 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I don't see it as because of him. The fact is that he showed up after they got up. With the sun being fixed in place, I take that as a sort of purgatorial state prior to death.
      My interpretation is that the uncanny individual is shamanistic or spiritual in nature, like a physical psychopomp. He said that the others refused his help - actions that they themselves would need to enact - prior to being able to render actual aid.
      I like the story because it is this subtle hint of supernatural that tinges a mundane tragedy.

      @@Falafeljk I agree that trusting him whole-heartedly would have been foolhardy, especially at the beginning. But he is ultimately the reason why the narrator survived and he states that he offered help to the others. The morals seem to be "weigh your odds" and "be prepared."
      Still, a fun story to look into because it doesn't exactly delineate everything.

      None of you get the point. The demon WAS actively keeping them in the canyon. The only way out was accepting his help (which was not for free), so he was basically keeping them hostage and forcing them into a Leonine contract. In the end, the protagonist was helped by the demon, so now he owes him. He was being forced into a "deal with the devil" scenario and he couldn't avoid it.

    As the story progressed, I started to believe Marcus and his friends got into accident and the tall, lanky, pale and emaciated stranger, was the death itself. I thought him offering to help was his way of saying, he could end their suffering and take their lives. Marcus refusing his help to the very end and ending up as the only survivor, further supports that theory. But... The tall stranger actually, physically saved Marcus and then casually showed up in the hospital?
    I guess with that my theory's out of the window, unless Marcus was the only one who saw the tall stranger enter his room and the man who actually saved him, was a completely different person. But that's unlikely, as the tall man was quick to take the credit for Marcus's survival, saying: "I told you, you'd need my help".

    This reminded me of the story of shangri la, which is a map in a game where the story goes that 2 archaeologists get trapped in a loop because of a magical eclipse, I believe this is kind of the same deal, they’re stuck in a purgatory right before their deaths, and the man offering to help is the devil, (or some kind of godlike entity) who is offering to help them at the cost of them having to initiate the first few steps in order to ensure their survival, Markus survived because he tried his best to survive, he did what he had to do. Reggie didn’t because he was careless, and didn’t really think about his own survival before it was too late, and clay didn’t survive because he followed the man for an unknown, and probably illogical reason, he asked questions instead of answering.
    Idk, 10 out of 10 story and 11 out of ten 10 voice acting

    D) I would not go hiking in the desert in the first place. Are you kidding? I start to sweat when it's 60 degrees out with a stiff breeze. I'd shrivel up and die before I could walk more than a yard.
    Anyway, that story is gonna haunt me, wowee. :)

    I've always loved camping. As a kid, we camped lots of times each year. As an adult, I still camped with my family, but at tamed campgrounds. Life then caught up (age, too).
    However, these days, if we went camping - I would make sure to have someone on watch through the night...

    This isn't the first story I've heard it in but even a casual test would demonstrate that biting off your finger is not as easy as biting through a carrot. In fact the only way you could bite through your finger would be severing it at one of the knuckles, at least ligaments and tendons are soft tissue.

    If you find a guy that abnormal appearing at your campsite, just skip the nonsense and ask him what he’s doing there because that sh*t just doesn’t happen normally. I’ve listened to enough of these stories and I like to think I would cut to the chase. Unless he’s clearly threatening you, be civil, realize you are in a different reality, and find out what he’s there for. I would like to think I would do that, but the truth is you cannot know how you would react until it happens to you. At least I know the lore thanks to TH-camrs like this amazing storyteller. I know what to expect at least, although that doesn’t mean it would save me from a horrific fate. I would rather live my whole life never encountering high strangeness like this, but it’s not up to me.
