    This was a fun time until the end.
    I have prosopagnosia, or face blindness. I have failed to recognize every member of my family at my various work places, including my mom. I have scared myself walking by a mirror after a haircut, thinking my reflection was an intruder.
    I did not notice the ghosts in Bly Manor had no faces.
    So when it came down to the power of facial processing at the end, I felt suddenly a bit scared. Delightful~!

    • @FluorescentPhnix1
      @FluorescentPhnix1 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I have heard of face blindness before, do you have other ways to identify people you know? How much of an inconvenience is it to you in everyday life if you don't mind me asking? Or is it something your so used too that its a norm?

    • @Dice-Z
      @Dice-Z ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@FluorescentPhnix1 Well, i can't speak for people with face blindness, but we've got more than one sense. Smell, hearing. You've recognized people from their voice alone before. Brain plasticity might get involved and heighten their other senses. And there are ways to indentify people physically besides their faces. Tatoos, clothes, accessories, perfume, and many other things.

      My vision is so bad without glasses or contact lenses that I lived with similar problems for a couple years in my late teens before I finally got sick of it and made my dad take me to get them checked out. Not realizing that people were smiling and trying to get my attention was probably the biggest inconvenience because it made me seem weird and antisocial, but it was also pretty frightening to see shapes I couldn't make out in the distance or out of the corner of my vision when I was alone.

    • @Prizzlesticks
      @Prizzlesticks 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@FluorescentPhnix1 Oh, sorry, I didn't see this response. Didn't mean to leave you hanging for a year!
      Personally, I identify people largely by their hair and voice. I will notice the slightest hair trim or change in styling. I am also very good at identifying voice actors, even when they are using a different accent or register. Other ways I manage is to always look at the clothing of people I'm out with before splitting up. I think I loved cartoons so much as a kid because the characters always wore the same outfits and hair styles, so I never got confused about the plot.
      Every person I've spoken to with prosopagnosia has different ways of identifying people, and varying degrees of severity. There are two types, acquired and congenital. I imagine it is a bit more jarring for those with acquired face blindness, because they didn't grow up sorting people into categories of hair or whatever to try and remember them. So I'm not confident guessing how they learn to adapt. A lot of people with congenital prosopagnosia do not even realize it for a long time, if at all. For me, it wasn't until leaving the structure of school, where I was with the same students in the same places everyday, that it became extremely apparent. I thought for a long time I was a bad person or thoughtless for not remembering people. In reality, once I know who I am talking to, it's like a floodgate opens. Not only do I know who they are, I can name all their pets and ask how their kids are and if they were able to take care of their flooded basement or whatever. In reality, I have an excellent memory for people. I just can't retain faces. A lot of people describe my double greeting, where I politely smile and ask how they're doing, then realize who they are 30 seconds later, light up, and exclaim, "Oh!! Hello!!!!"
      I think of how to describe it sometimes. I can see faces. I like to draw and paint and can do portraits, but I have to look at the person literally every 5 seconds just to get it down and struggle somewhat on the portrait as a whole. I frequently have to step back and measure out the proportions, lest I inadvertently recreate the cortical homunculus by mistake. But I do visually process faces. It's the retention I struggle with. Like water through a sieve, the features fall away right after I stop looking. When I try to reconstruct a face from memory, it is like playing slot machines. My brain just selects random features to paste on their face. Then, even that reconstruction is nebulous. Like those little holographic cards that morph when you tilt them.
      I think what got me to realize what I was experiencing was waking up from a dream I had of my grandmother, who died a decade prior by then. In my dream, I recalled everything about her, from her lilac blazer and purple bow, the ornate faerie pendant she wore on a dangling gold rope chain, her dyed brown hair tucked up in a wispy bun, the slight croak in her voice from age and ages of smoking... But not her face. I thought back on photos I have and could recall plenty with her, the clothes and composition of the photos. Not her face. Then I started thinking back on my mom's face, my sisters', my own. Nothing. It was a lot...
      I'm mostly fine with it now, but it is problematic. I've had coworkers who think I've snubbed them when I walked past in the store. I've had embarrassing moments running up to hug a friend only to realize that is a stranger, and now we're both traumatized. There have been times a person has approached me outside of work who I know is a customer but couldn't place, only to realize it was the guy 50 years my senior who wanted me to leave work and get into his car, constantly asked me on dates and made inappropriate comments, and was a general creep. Except now we're five minutes into a polite conversation, and I can't suddenly shout, "Ew! No!" because that would be weird. (Note to past self: you really could have done that, actually, and you should have.) I grew up pretty anxious about crowds, and that hasn't improved. I just now also feel anxious I know the crowd and can't tell, so I don't look at others when I am out and about. So that's a bummer. On the other hand, I now gave the very funny story of asking a customer, "Is this your Americano, ma'am?" Only for the woman to stare at me with deep disappointment and say, "...I birthed you." Aaaah, Mom. Only she would snark at me so. Seriously, we both laugh every time we recall the story.
      So that's what it is like for me, but I'd encourage you to ask around or listen to other accounts if you're curious! There's also a somewhat dramatic short film called 'Prosopagnosia' by Omeleto here on YT. Yes, the lead has prosopagnosia, but the actual twist isn't in the movie script. It is a massive fourth wall breaker, just don't read the comments until after the credits roll. That's fun. :)

    Small creepy story (happened to me):
    I was driving home from school just Tuesday night and as I usually do to "decompress" from the day is drive up along the base of the mountains and take the scenic route home. When I decided to head back to town I turned down one of the back roads that connects back to the main suburb. Near the mountains there is zero light pollution so it's PITCH BLACK. I am always cautious about wildlife so I turned on my brights. When I did I saw a tall (about 7ft) humanoid creature with antlers. When I blinked it was gone. I normally take my time on the back roads because I enjoy it but I noped out of there and will find a different route!

      I know we had stories about off trail hikers here stumbling onto (thankfully not into) fish hooks hung all around at eye level, and sawed off shot guns on trip wires. We never knew if they were just stories or if the people were telling the truth, but it was back when weed was still illegal on the west coast but we had the best trees and shrubs to grow and be heavily covered from the helicopters that would fly over so I really wouldn’t be surprised 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I dunno what it is, maybe it's just selective, or maybe it's just me, but it feels like the stories lately are more focused on the drama rather than the fear factor. Not to say I didn't enjoy some of those stories, but I'd still be watching cable if I wanted the drama. Either way, your production seems to improve every time I come by with all the little ambient noises you've added. I love it.
